This case describes the start?up challenges confronted by an enterprising young entrepreneur in creating a home?based electronic commerce store. In contrast to all the get rich quick hype we have heard about, the value of this example lies in the fact that it identifies some of the real challenges--technical, management and marketing-- faced by new web-based ventures. It also gives a glimpse of some of the potential benefits and pitfalls of a web-based retailing enterprise. The beginnings of a start-up, creation and maintenance of a web based business, and then the ultimate shutdown of the company are discussed.

This paper builds on research presented by the authors at IRMA 2001. Previous research by Chau and Turner (2001b) adapted the work of Venkatraman (1994) to explore the relationship between the degree of SME organisational transformation and potential benefits derived from e-commerce. The qualitative data explored reveals various factors that influence SME’s ability to derive benefit from conducting Web-based e-commerce. A preliminary review suggests that these factors can be distinguished into internal factors (organisational and technological) and external factors (nature of supply chain, level of service provided by third party organisations, industry influence, and government assistance). This paper discusses these factors and their implications for modelling e-business organisational transformation.

Drawing on two areas of academic interest, female entrepreneurship and the Internet sector, this paper provides an overview of female entrepreneurship in the Web-based business sector in the UK. Based on a field study of 20 Web-based small Internet companies owned by women, the paper explores why women start up dot-com businesses and presents a typology of dot-com women entrepreneurs. The findings provide interesting and indicative insights into patterns of female entrepreneurship in this growth sector.

Telemedicine has become an increasingly important part of the modern healthcare infrastructure, especially in the present situation with the COVID-19 pandemics. Many cloud platforms have been used intensively for Telemedicine. The most popular ones include PubNub, Amazon Web Service, Google Cloud Platform and Microsoft Azure. One of the crucial challenges of telemedicine is the real-time application monitoring for the vital sign. The commercial platform is, by far, not suitable for real-time applications. The alternative is to design a web-based application exploiting Web Socket. This research paper concerns the real-time six-parameter vital-sign monitoring using a web-based application. The six vital-sign parameters are electrocardiogram, temperature, plethysmogram, percent saturation oxygen, blood pressure and heart rate. The six vital-sign parameters were encoded in a web server site and sent to a client site upon logging on. The encoded parameters were then decoded into six vital sign signals. Our proposed multi-parameter vital-sign telemedicine system using Web Socket has successfully remotely monitored the six-parameter vital signs on 4G mobile network with a latency of less than 5 milliseconds.

Background: Experts agree that HF patients should practice appropriate self-care behaviors to minimize the risk of adverse clinical events, including early unplanned readmissions. We sought to understand patient perceptions and adherence to a web-based system designed to support self-care of HF patients. Methods: 100 HF patients were surveyed regarding their computer use and attitudes toward using an internet based web-portal (WP) to support self-care, provide patient education, and communicate with healthcare providers (HCP’s). We then consented 42 patients to participate in a 12 week trial of using the WP to track clinical parameters (daily weights, blood pressure, sodium/fluid intake, exercise), provide links for HF self-education, and update HCP’s on their progress. Patients received a face to face teaching session on accessing and using the WP. Results: The computer use survey (N=100) demonstrated that 72% of patients reported having a computer at home, 67% used email and 71% used the internet. In the WP intervention group (N=41) only 24 (58.5%) were able to successfully access the WP and enter data during the pilot (see table 1). Conclusions: Pilot data showed a significant positive correlation (see table 1) between patients indicating use of internet to access heaIth care information (HCI) and adherence with the WP. Despite strong interest to use a home based WP for self-care and communication with providers, we found that many hurdles prevented patients from using the WP. Internet based educational tools for HF patients may be desirable, but limitations in patients’ ability to access internet based programs may ultimately render the tools ineffective.

There is currently limited evidence on parents’ and early childhood educators’ perspectives on implementing programs that combine cognitive and motor tasks in early childhood. An online survey was distributed across Australia through social network platforms and emails at preschool centres, asking 65 parents of preschool children and early childhood educators about their preferences on program delivery, duration, and mode. Responses from the survey were evaluated in order to develop and pilot a 4 week home-based (n = 5 parents) and a 6 week school-based program (n = 5 educators) including cognitively engaging physical activity, requesting parents’ and educators’ perspectives, respectively, about the program components. Results from the online survey showed a preference for programs with online (e.g., video-based) compared to traditional delivery (e.g., books), emphasising the potential benefits on children’s physical activity levels, sleep, and cognitive function. However, after piloting the program, educators preferred to use the book version instead of the video. This program has the potential to become part of daily regular practice. Barriers reported include logistics issues (i.e., book size), connectivity issues with internet, and the need for varying activities.

The 21st Century Cures Act (“Cures Act”) relies on the concept of real-world evidence (“RWE”) to improve the Food and Drug Administration (“FDA”) approval process. This has amplified interest and furthered momentum in applying RWE more broadly, beyond FDA regulation. In this article, we discuss the understandable appeal of RWE's pragmatic application and its many potential benefits. But we also caution that claims about RWE's wide-ranging, ameliorative impact on the health care system are likely overstated.The real world of RWE is messy and uncertain. Successfully incorporating RWE into regular health care system decision-making, beyond the FDA, faces considerable obstacles and limitations. We review the reasons to be wary about RWE as a game-changer. These concerns including data reliability, insufficient incentives for stakeholders to generate and engage with high-quality RWE, and lack of comprehensive regulatory oversight. In addition, the push for RWE may impact the enforcement of the health care fraud and abuse laws, perhaps not in necessarily positive ways. Increased reliance on RWE may have significant implications for off-label fraud enforcement, further conflating the distinction between claims that are false for reimbursement rather than for scientific purposes.

Vocabulary Control Nusantara Website is a voluntary movement that focused work on developing the index language automation system web-based, which is everyone can contribute to the development of site content. From the beginning of the movement until now Vocabulary Control Nusantara Website still in the development stage and no assessment evaluates the level of usability of the website. Therefore, usability analysis is needed to measure the level usability of the Vocabulary Control Nusantara Website and also to predict the potential benefits which will be obtained later when this movement complete. This study does a usability analysis on the homepage and backend page of the Vocabulary Control Nusantara Website by using the WEBUSE method to measure how good the level usability website. The analysis results show on the homepage page get the level usability “Good”, although there are two categories on the backend page which gets the level usability “Moderate”. Besides, there are some unsolved problems that are recommended to further testing and implementation redesign websites.

Like other components of Semantic Web-based applications, ontologies are evolving over time to reflect changes in the real world. Several of these applications require keeping a full-fledged history of ontology changes so that both ontology instance versions and their corresponding ontology schema versions are maintained. Updates to an ontology instance could be non-conservative that is leading to a new ontology instance version no longer conforming to the current ontology schema version. If, for some reasons, a non-conservative update has to be executed, in spite of its consequence, it requires the production of a new ontology schema version to which the new ontology instance version is conformant so that the new ontology version produced by the update is globally consistent. In this paper, we first propose an approach that supports ontology schema changes which are triggered by non-conservative updates to ontology instances and, thus, gives rise to an ontology schema versioning driven by instance updates. Note that in an engineering perspective, such an approach can be used as an incremental ontology construction method driven by the modification of instance data, whose exact structure may not be completely known at the initial design time. After that, we apply our proposal to the already established [Formula: see text]OWL (Temporal OWL 2) framework, which allows defining and evolving temporal OWL 2 ontologies in an environment that supports temporal versioning of both ontology instances and ontology schemas, by extending it to also support the management of non-conservative updates to ontology instance versions. Last, we show the feasibility of our approach by dealing with its implementation within a new release of the [Formula: see text] OWL-Manager tool.

Abstract This paper introduces a novel technique that allows real-time injection monitoring with distributed fiber optics using physics-informed machine learning methods and presents results from Clair Ridge asset where a cloud-based, real-time application is deployed. Clair Ridge is a structural high comprising of naturally fractured Devonian to Carboniferous continental sandstones, with a significantly naturally fractured ridge area. The fractured nature of the reservoir lends itself to permanent deployment of Distributed Fiber Optic Sensing (DFOS) to enable real-time injection monitoring to maximise recovery from the field. In addition to their default limitations, such as providing a snapshot measurement and disturbing the natural well flow with up and down flowing passes, wireline-conveyed production logs (PL) are also unable to provide a high-resolution profile of the water injection along the reservoir due to the completion type. DFOS offers unique surveillance capability when permanently installed along the reservoir interface and continuously providing injection profiles with full visibility along the reservoir section without the need for an intervention. The real-time injection monitoring application uses both distributed acoustic and temperature sensing (DAS & DTS) and is based on physics-informed machine learning models. It is now running and available to all asset users on the cloud. So far, the application has generated high-resolution injection profiles over a dozen multi-rate injection periods automatically and the results are cross-checked against the profiles from the warmback analyses that were also generated automatically as part of the same application. The real-time monitoring insights have been effectively applied to provide significant business value using the capability for start-up optimization to manage and improve injection conformance, monitor fractured formations and caprock monitoring.
