Abstract Aspergillus terreus is a fungus that causes aspergillosis disease. The infected fishes showed grey white patches over the body. Haemorrhagic ulceratic patches were observed on the gill and skin. The infections resulted in the death of the fishes. The use of chemicals to control fungal attack A. terreus can harm fish, the environment and humans who eat them. Treatment of fungal diseases that use a lot of chemicals that can harm the fish, the environment and humans who eat them. The use of medicinal plants is a safe way to inhibit and kill fungus growth as well as environmentally friendly. One of them uses the basil plant (Ocimum sanctum). The purpose of this study was to determine the minimum concentration of activity and basil leaf juice (O. sanctum Linn) as antifungal against A. terreus growth in vitro . The experiment was conducted at the Laboratory of the Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Airlangga University in July 2013. The method used in this research that the paper disc diffusion method and diffusion pitting. The analysis used in this study is descriptive statistica. The results of research using the juice of basil leaves (O. santum) of juice concentration of 50% (2,5 ml juice of basil leaves + 2,5 ml NaCl) to concentration 100% (5 ml juice of basil leaves) did not produce a clear zone around the paper discs and pitting, it is the same as the negative control. The positive control did not show fungus growing on Sabouraud Dextrose Agar medium (SDA).

Noni juice can inhibit the growth of Escherichia coli bacteria. Noni juice extraction needs concentration to extract so that the preparation is more stable in the storage process. The purpose of this study was to determine the antibacterial activity and the amount of the minimum inhibitory concentration of noni juice extract from E. coli bacteria in vitro. This type of experimental research with a completely randomized one-way design. The extract was obtained by concentrating the Noni leaf extract. Extract quality control parameters include organoleptic, yield, drying shrinkage, and qualitative tests of flavonoid and anthraquinone compounds. Antibacterial activity test using the disc diffusion method with an extract concentration of 1.56%; 3.12%; 6.25%; 12.5%; and 25% with 3 replications. Positive control of amoxicillin and negative control of distilled water. Inhibition is known from the zone formed around the paper disc. The data obtained were statistically analyzed using Kruskall Wallis followed by Mann Whitney with a 95% confidence level. The results showed that the variation in the concentration of the noni juice extract had a significant effect (p <0.05). The biggest inhibitory zone was seen at 25% concentration of 10.16 mm and included in the strong category. The minimum inhibitory power was produced at a concentration of 3.12% at 2.50 mm with a weak treatment category.

ABSTRACT Objectives: This in vitro study evaluated the antimicrobial effects of commercial toothpastes containing natural compounds. Materials and Methods: The study groups were divided based on the natural compound present in the toothpaste composition: Sorbitol (I), tocopherol (II), mint (III), cinnamon/mint (IV), propolis/melaleuca (V), mint/açai (VI), mint/guarana (VII), propolis (VIII), negative control (IX), and the positive control (X). The antimicrobial properties of the toothpastes were tested using the disk diffusion method against oral pathogens: Streptococcus mutans, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Enterococcus faecalis. The resulting inhibition halos were measured in millimeters. Results: The data indicated that the bacteria responded differently to the toothpastes (P < 0.0001). The diameters of the inhibition halos against S. mutans were in decreasing order of efficacy: Propolis/melaleuca > mint/guarana > mint/açai > sorbitol > tocopherol > cinnamon/mint > propolis > mint (P < 0.001 vs. negative control). E. faecalis showed variable responses to the dentifrices in the following order of decreasing efficacy: Mint/guarana > propolis > sorbitol > mint/açai > tocopherol > cinnamon/mint > mint = propolis/melaleuca = negative control. The product with the highest antimicrobial activity was mint/guarana, which was significantly different than propolis/melaleuca, mint, cinnamon/mint, and tocopherol and negative control (P < 0.001). The statistical analysis indicated that propolis, sorbitol, and mint/açai did not show any differences compared to mint/guarana (P > 0.05) and positive control (P > 0.05). P. aeruginosa was resistant to all dental gels tested including positive control. Conclusion: The toothpastes with natural compounds have therapeutic potential and need more detailed searches for the correct clinic therapeutic application. The results from this study revealed differences in the antimicrobial activities of commercial toothpastes with natural compounds.

<p>The objectives of this reserch were to determine the antibacterial activity of hexane-petroleum ether (1 : 1 v/v) extract of Artemisia cinaBerg. ex Poljakov on Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus and its compounds. The design of the research was using completely Randomized Design in five concentration of extract that were 0, 50, 75, 100, 150, dan 200 mg/ml with four repliceted. Ethanol 60% was used as negative control and tetracycline as positive control. There were three steps of research. First step was extracted the plant using soxhlet method with hexane-petroleum ether (1:1 v/v). Second step was determined the antibacterial activity of hexane-petroleum ether (1:1 v/v) extract in various concentration of that extracts on E. Coli and S. aureus using agar diffusion method. Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) and was used to determined the significan different of diameter of inhibition between the treatments. Thirdsteps was phytochemical analysis of extract. The highest antibactrial activity on E. Coli was at 100 mg/ml whereas on S. Aureus at 150 mg/ml. That extract was contained flavonoid, alkaloid, essential oils, saponin, sterol, tritepene, hydrolized tannin, and coumarin.</p>

Indonesia has  biodiversity potential to be developed as medicinal plants, such as basil leaves (Ocimum sanctum L.). Basil was reported to have a very high antioxidant activity in vitro. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of basil leaves (Ocimum sanctum L.) infusion to liver based Aspartate Aminotransferase (AST) and Alanine Aminotransferase (ALT) value in each dose. 18 rats were divided into 6 groups.,  control group,  negative control group treated with CMC Na 0.5%,  positive control group treated with Curcuma 3.6 mg / 200gBB, groups of 4-6 consecutive given a 80 mg  dose infusion basil / 200 gBB, 160 mg / 200 gBB, 320 mg / 200 gBB for 8 consecutive days, on the day of the 4th and 8th all treatment groups induced by toxic doses of paracetamol (500 mg / 200 gBB) except the normal control group 1, The research data in the form of enzyme activity of AST and ALT were analyzed using parametric and nonparametric ANOVA, and Friedman test with the level of trust  then followed by SNK test and Bnj test. The statistical test result with a 95% of level of trust that shown basil infuse with a dose of 80mg / 200gBB, 160mg / 200gBB, 320mg / 200gBB have hepatoprotective effects in rats induced by paracetamol 500mg / 200gBB. Based on the result of changes in average levels of AST on the fourth day and the eighth day of the three treatment infusion, infusion at a dose of 160 mg / 200gBB most effectively reduce average levels of AST and a group that has the average AST closest to the control group is positive, but infusion at a dose of 320mg / 200gBB the group that has the closest average ALT positive control group.Keywords : hepatoprotective, Ocimum sanctum L, Paracetamol

This study aimed to determine the inhibitory effect and the concentration of fingerroot extract to inhibit Staphylococcus aureus growth. The data was analyzed descriptively. Ampicillin was used as positive control, distilled water was used as negative control, and the treatments were given fingerroot extract with a concentration of 5%, 15%, 25%, 35% and 45%. This study was conducted with three replications. The parameter measured was the diameter of inhibition zone formed by diffusion method. The average diameter of inhibition zone of the fingerroot extract were 15% : 10.3 mm; 25% : 13,6mm; 35% : 18,7mm; 45% ± 21,1mm, and at a concentration of 5% the inhibition zone is not formed. The final conclusion is that the fingerroot extract can inhibit the growth of Staphylococcus aureus. The higher concentration of fingerroot extract, the more extensive inhibition zone formed.

Streptococcus mutans </em><em>i</em><em>s the main cause of caries. Caries c</em><em>an</em><em> be prevented by using a topical application of fluoride. The Anchovy (Stolephorus insularis) contain</em><em>s</em><em> protein, vitamins (A, B<sub>1</sub>, C), and minerals (Fe, Ca, K, F). Calcium fluoride (CaF<sub>2</sub>) within the anchovy c</em><em>an</em><em> inhibit the occurrence of dental caries. <strong>Purpose</strong></em><strong><em>: </em></strong><em>The aim of this study was </em><em>to </em><em>determine the </em><em>antimicrobial </em><em> ability of anchovy extract (Stolephorus insularis) to Streptococcus mutans. <strong>Materials and</strong> <strong>Methods: </strong>This study was a laboratory experimental research </em><em>with</em><em>  post test only control group design. Diffusion method were applied with 2 controls: negative control used DMSO 1%, positive control used NaF solution, and 3 concentrations of anchovy extract (Stolephorus insularis) 3%, 6%, and 12%, each group were composed of 6 samples. </em><em>Antimicrobial</em><em> was assessed by measuring the diameter of the clear zone around the discs contained the anchovy extract (Stolephorus insularis). Data were analyzed by Kruskal-Wallis test followed by Mann-Whitney test.<strong> Result:</strong> The results from this study showed clear zone around the discs of the anchovy extract (Stolephorus insularis). The more concentration of the extract showed the more </em><em>antimirobial</em><em> zone diameter. The average zone of </em><em>antimicrobial</em><em> at  </em><em>the </em><em>concentration of  3% </em><em>were </em><em>7,11 mm, 6%</em><em> </em><em>9,5 mm, 12%</em><em> </em><em>10,78 mm, for the negative control DMSO 1% 6 mm and the positive control NaF solution 8,16 mm. The largest diameter of the clear zone was at concentration of 12% (P &lt; 0,05).</em><em> </em><strong><em>Conclusion: </em></strong><em>The<strong> </strong>anchovy extract (Stolephorus insularis) had an antimicrobial effect to the growth of Streptococcus mutans.</em><em></em></p>

The purpose of this study was to determine in vitro inhibition test of lime peel liquid (Citrus aurantifolia, Swingle) against E. coli. The E. coli isolate was cultured on Muller Hinton Agar (MHA) media. Antibacterial test in this study using diffusion method. Negative control (K-) using CMC-Na 0.1%. Positive control (K+) using oxytetracycline antibiotics. The treatments were given lime peel liquid (Citrus aurantifolia, Swingle) with concentrations of 100%, 75%, 50% and 25%, respectively. The study design using Completely Randomized Design (CRD) method, with six treatments and four repetitions. Data were analyzed by Kruskal-Wallis test, Moreover, the Post Hoc Mann-Whitney method. The inhibition zone analysis results were showed that K + had significant differences compared to all treatments K-, 100%, 75%, 50%, and 25%. K- was found to be significantly different from treatments 100%, 75%, 50% and 25%. The results showed that the lime peel liquid has the potential as an antibacterial activity against the growth of E. coli in vitro. Concentration of 25% has shown the presence of inhibitory zones on Mueller Hinton media that have been inoculated with lime peel liquid.

This research aims to determine the effectiveness of the antibacterial soursop leaf extract (Annona muricata L.). The method used is the agar diffusion method. The leaves were extracted by maceration method, using ethanol as a solvent. The soursop leaf extract obtained was then diluted using ethanol 96% at a concentration of 20%, 40%,60%, 80%. Positive control using clindamycin and negative controls using sterile aquadest. The research model used in this study is an experimental research model In Vitro of type. The results showed that soursop leaf extract had antibacterial effectiveness against Propionibacterium acnes with an average inhibition zone diameter of 9,7 mm; 13,7 mm; 15,7 mm; 16,3 mm; positive control (clindamysin) 21,0 mm; and negative control (aquadest) have no value tobe able to inhibit bacterial growth.

Nosocomial infection caused by Pseudomonas aeruginosa bacteria is hard to be treated since the infection transmission is fast and it is resistance to the antibiotic. Antibiotic resistance in the bacteria can be treated with various natural ingredients from plants and one of the plants is single garlic. Single garlic contains organosulfur compounds in form of alliin, allicin, and ajoene. This research aimed to analyze the potential of single garlic oil (SGO) in inhibiting the growth and the damage of membrane of P. aeruginosa bacteria in in vitro with disc diffusion method by giving treatments of essential oil extract in concentration of 25 mg/ml, 50 mg/ml, 75 mg/ml and 100 mg/ml, and 1% dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO) as the negative control and Ceftazidimeof 30 µg/ml as the positive control. The damage of the bacterial cell membrane was observed with Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) with a magnification of 25000X. The result of the measurement of the zone of inhibition was analyzed using one-way ANOVA. The research results indicate that SGO could inhibit the growth of P. aeruginosa bacteria with strong criteria, which was in a concentration of 100 mg/ml.

Putri SDK, Susilowati A, Setyaningsih R. 2016. In vitro testing of antibacterial activity of extracts of seed cardamom (Amomum compactum) against by Aeromonas hydrophila. Biofarmasi 14: 10-18. One of the obstacles that hinder the cultivation of common freshwater fish is the presence of pathogenic bacteria Aeromonas hydrophila. These bacteria cause Motile Aeromonas Septicemia (MAS). One effort against MAS on freshwater fish is the use of cardamom seed (Amomum compactum). The purpose of this study was to know the antibacterial activity and get the minimum concentration of cardamom seed extract that was able to inhibit A. hydrophila in vitro. Cardamom seed extraction was done by stratified maceration using three solvent, i.e., n-hexane, ethyl acetate, and methanol. Antibacterial activity was conducted using disc diffusion method with 100% concentration for each extract, solvents, only bacteria culture without the extract as negative control and positive control for chloramphenicol 3,4%. Minimum Concentration Inhibitory test (MIC) performed using extracts of the most widespread inhibitory zone. The extract concentrations tested 5,71%, 2,70%, 1,35%, 0,68%, 0,34%, 0,17%(b/v),and 0% as a negative control, while the antibiotic chloramphenicol as a positive control. Data analyzed using Analysis of Variance test (ANOVA) and Duncans Multiple Range test (DMRT) level of 5%. Cardamom seed extracted with n-hexane, ethyl acetate and methanol as a solvent were 11,1 g, 10 g, and 15,1 g extract respectively. Inhibition zone of 100% cardamom seed extract with the solvent n-hexane, ethyl acetate, and methanol were 5,25 mm, 6,25 mm and 5,75 mm respectively. MIC values in the ethyl acetate extract of A. hydrophila were 2,70%.
