<p>This paper discusses the phenomenon of religious lectures on social media that are gender-biased. The gender-biased religious lectures delivered in social media by some famous figures perpetuate the discrimination against women in Indonesia. This research answers how and why the religious lectures with gender-biased theme appear massively on social media. By using a qualitative method and feminist approach, the study focuses on the religious preachers on the new social media. This study shows that the large amounts of lectures with the gender-biased theme in social media are inseparable from the role of the promotional accounts. It shares videos of gender-themed propaganda massively and attractively to attract many visitors and followers of these accounts. This study reveals that the massive religious lectures with gender bias on social media are not only dealing with the textual understanding of religious texts but also a matter of the religious commodification. The actors of business could determine the massively particular religious discourse on social media.</p>

This study examines the various sexist practices on the Internet called cyber sexism. The Internet seems to become a new world for patriarchal domination. The amount of content, comments, and memes circulating on the Internet and social media, such as Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, and WhatsApp harassing women, is proof of the patriarchal power on the Internet. This study used a qualitative method with a feminist perspective, collecting memes through Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, and WhatsApp. The memes were then reviewed and interpreted to find their meaning. Using Pierre Bourdieu’s habitus theory and symbolic violence, memes were analyzed to find the factors that cause sexism against women and the logical link between sexist practices in the real world and cyber sexism on the Internet. Results indicate that people’s habitus about patriarchy has become a mental structure of society that influences stereotyped behavior and gender bias and plays an important role in sexism on the Internet. The Internet, as an arena, has become the initial capital for men to dominate. Naming and mentioning women in various memes are the forms of symbolic violence against them that form new sexist habitus on the Internet.

Language is not only simply a means of communicating information, but also means of establishing and maintaining relationship with other people (Trudgil, 2000). In social life, the first thing that you will notice is the gender of the person we met. It is a fundamental and obvious thing before we can have an interaction or communication with somebody else. The objective of the activity is to direct the students in understanding the role of gender in language for daily life more deeply. The students are expected to be able analyze the language phenomena in their daily life. The activity is started by explaining the materials to the students about gender role, gender bias, and gender dialect used. The second step is that grouping the students and asks them to discuss about the phenomena of gender in language used in their society so that they know how the characteristic of each gender in their society. The last step is discussing the results together in class. This activity is probably appropriate for the advanced learners, such as university students. It can gain the students’ knowledge and raising the students’ confident in stating their opinion in discussion. Keywords: contextual, lesson planning, role of gender

This study aims to determine the social interaction of Lazis Darul Hikam and the community through Instagram social media and to find out the role of social media Instagram in building awareness of donation in Lazis Darul Hikam. The research uses symbolic interaction theory to photograph how people interact using social media, define the meaning of the symbols conveyed and ultimately lead to actions in this case giving donations. The method used is a qualitative method, the donor Lazis Darul Hikam, an active user of Instagram, is an informant in this study. The results showed that social media has the following roles: (1) Instagram is a medium for inter-institutional interaction with the community to introduce programs and reporting media, (2) Instagram social media is also able to build awareness of donations by collecting funds obtained through social media.AbstrakPenelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui interaksi sosial Lazis Darul Hikam dan masyarakat melalui media sosial Instagram serta untuk mengetahui peran media sosial Instagram membangun kesadaran berdonasi di Lazis Darul Hikam.  Penelitian menggunakan teori interaksi simbolik untuk memotret bagaimana masyarakat berinteraksi menggunakan media sosial, mendefinisikan makna dari simbol-simbol yang disampaikan dan akhirnya bermuara pada perbuatan dalam hal ini memberikan donasi. Metode yang digunakan adalah metode kualitatif, donatur Lazis Darul Hikam pengguna aktif Instagram menjadi informan dalam penelitian ini. Hasil penelitian didapatkan bahwa media sosial memiliki peran sebagai berikut: (1) Instagram menjadi media untuk berinteraksi antar lembaga dengan masyarakat untuk memperkenalkan program dan media pelaporan, (2) Media sosial Instagram juga mampu membangun kesadaran berdonasi dengan terkumpulnya dana yang didapatkan melalui media sosial

A report from the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) in 2016 says that Indonesia is still struggling to close its gender equality gap. However, looking at the development of internet usage and the penetration of social media in Indonesia, it can be said that Indonesia has the opportunity to utilize social media to address various gender issues. This article uses a case study to explore and analyze the way “Aliansi Laki-Laki Baru” (ALLB) or “New Men’s Alliance”, a form of activism which emphasizes the importance of men's involvement in fighting for gender equality, utilizes social media to promote their ideas. As a social movement, ALLB consistently use social media to reach their audiences, engage their partners, and creating a sense of community. They focus in promoting mutual relationships between men and women and the importance of men’s involvement to support gender equality. The study on men’s involvement in promoting the agenda of feminism and gender issues is critical, yet there are still few studies in the context of Indonesia. This study shows that through ALLB, advocacy on gender issues has undergone a fundamental change that does not make women as the main focus but rather on men, and their role to fight for gender equality and justice for women.

The study of the psychological effects of social media use on adolescents’ adjustment has long been the focus of psychological research, but results are still inconclusive. In particular, there is a lack of research on the positive and negative developmental outcomes and on possible moderating variables, especially concerning early adolescence. To fill these gaps in literature, the present study longitudinally investigated the relationships between social media use, depressive symptoms, affective well-being and life satisfaction, as well as the moderating role of emotional self-efficacy and gender. The study involved 336 Italian early adolescents (mean age = 13, sd = 0.3; 48% girls) who completed an anonymous self-report questionnaire twice within a year. Main results showed that higher social media use was related to higher depressive symptoms, lower affective well-being and lower life satisfaction among girls with lower emotional self-efficacy. Conversely, high social media use was related to higher affective well-being and higher life satisfaction for girls with higher emotional self-efficacy. Results are discussed in relation to their implications for risk prevention and health promotion among early adolescents. In particular, our results suggest that promoting emotional self-efficacy can be very helpful in making the use of social media an opportunity for well-being and life satisfaction rather than a developmental risk.

Religious discourse represents an area of human communication in which persuasion plays a vital role; religious texts seem to be essentially related to the ultimate objective of religion: to create, mediate and legitimise ideology in order to persuade the reader of the veracity of the religious doctrine (Fairclough 1989, Cotterell & Turner 1989: 26-33, van Dijk 1998: 317). The paper seeks to investigate the persuasive strategies and linguistic means employed to convey persuasion in English Protestant sermons. The analysis focuses on the rhetorical role of pathos, which is purposefully evoked by the preacher via wilful employment of aff ect and emotions. Attention will also be paid to the blurred borderline between the intentional use of sentiment and sentimentality, and manipulation.

<p>There are some Indonesian local wisdom that have not been promoted yet. Consequently, some people will not access them due to less promotion. Hence, Indonesian should keep all of the local wisdoms in appropriate ways. One of the ways is by using promotion the local wisdom through youtube. This paper explores the promotion of Indonesian local wisdom through social media particularly YouTube and the values of local wisdom. It used a qualitative method. Data were primarily collected through documentation of eight videos created and uploaded into YouTube by the students in the department of Islamic broadcasting and communication from the fifth semester at state Islamic Institute of Kudus. The result reveals that social media have been beneficial for promoting the local wisdom especially in Central Java. Indeed, social media offers flexibility and mobility for people in uploading the videos of Indonesian local wisdom into YouTube, it offers an opportunity to expand the Indonesian local wisdom through widespread social networking around the world and fostering their innovation of making amazing videos and contents. The values of local wisdom include beliefs and religion, Indonesian local culture and traditions, local food promotion and business production, Indonesian architecture and heritage, nature and environment preservation.</p>

The presence of the hijrah community in Indonesia directly resulted in the emergence of a new religious authority. Social media is a key factor in the massive campaign and regeneration carried out by the hijrah community. 'Terang Jakarta' and 'Shift Bandung' are two hijrah communities that have a very large number of congregations, especially on social media. This research attempts to answer the role of social media in shaping new patterns of new religious authority and to describe its relationship with traditional religious authority. Using a qualitative approach, this research finds that the formation of new religious authorities is more dominated by the prseference for preaching through social media, both by public figures and new religious teachers at the local level. These new religious authorities were actively involved in the hijrah community which they directly cultivated. Traditional religious authorities such as Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) and Muhammadiyah need to synergize programs with hijrah groups, especially in dakwah activities and religious moderation. This research considers that the Islamic Progressive group is an alternative movement capable of providing advocacy to all groups in Indonesia.
