Abstract – This study aims to discover the experience of parents who lost their child as a result from political violence in 1998 and to outline their meaning-making process after the loss of their child. The study was conducted using qualitative method with phenomenological approach. Participants were parents of an undergraduate student who became the victim of the incident (some refer them as ‘Reformation Heroes’), approached through convenience sampling. Data were collected by using in-depth interviews. Several themes elicited from the interview results in both parents: sorrow and resentment; refusal of loss; loss of happiness, warmth, enthusiasm, and hope; detachment from social life; social support; justice effort; and faith. Analytical findings showed that eventhough the incident has occured more than 20 years ago, participants were still going through complicated grief. Parents construe their child’s death as an ongoing sacrifice effort for justice, hence they are commited to end it by demanding legal justice. Abstrak — Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk memahami pengalaman dan pemaknaan orang tua yang anaknya meninggal dalam peristiwa kekerasan politik pada tahun 1998. Background and Purpose: Commensality is an act of eating together among migrant communities as a means of passing down the culture and ethnic identity. There is very limited discussion on commensality that pays attention to food sharing and eating that extends beyond the traditional forms of social relationships, identity, and space among the Malay community abroad. Thus, this article aims to explore the connections of social relationships through food, space and identity amongst female Malay students in the United Kingdom.   Methodology: This research is based on one-year ethnographic fieldwork amongst female Malaysian Muslim students in Manchester and Cardiff.  Thirty in-depth interviews were conducted with both undergraduate and postgraduate students from sciences and social sciences courses. Besides, in-depth interviews, participant observation, conversation and fieldnotes methods were deployed as supplementary for data collection.   Findings: This paper argues that cooking and eating together in a private space is a way for them to maintain social relationships and overcome stress in their studies, and fulfil their desire to create harmony and trust at home. Besides, places such as the kitchen, play an essential space in building the Malay identity and social relationships between female Malay students’ communities in the host country.   Contributions: This study has contributed to an understanding of the meaning of friendship, identity, space, and the discussion on the anthropology of food from international students’ perspectives and migration studies.   Keywords: Food and identity, commensality, Malay students, friendship, international students.   Cite as: Ibnu, I. Abstract: Da'wah messages can be accepted among the (youth) community through da'wah packages that attract the attention of da'wah objects (mad'u). In packing da'wah messages, it is necessary to understand the mad'u situation, as done by jam'iyyah Hadrah Nurul Mustofa, which is much favored by young people, especially in Darungan-Cangkring-Jenggawah-Jember. The da'wah activities carried out by the Hadrah Nurul Mustofa have a special attraction for members and the community in general as their madú. Because the design of the da'wah movement is carried out in balance with the social conditions of young people who incidentally are alcoholic addicts. The purpose of this study is to understand the propaganda movement carried out by the Hadrah Nurul Mustofa to provide academic contributions with a theoretical description in the missionary movement, in addition it also provides a broad understanding for readers regarding the missionary movement, especially for Muslims who have the obligation to convey religious messages through da'wah. In this study, the researcher uses descriptive qualitative methods to explore data. This type of research uses a phenomenological approach that describes the general meaning of a number of individuals on various life experiences, so that the researcher can explore data relating to the tendency of youth and general habits already inherent in their social life. Collecting data in this study with active participant observation, non-structural in-depth interviews so that the data needed can be explored as deeply as possible. Data analysis uses a combined description of the phenomenon being studied by including textural descriptions and structural descriptions. This is the essence of individual experience that is the object of research and displays the peak aspects of phenomenological studies. The validity of the research data uses data triangulation which includes source triangulation, technique triangulation and time triangulation. The conclusion of this research is that the Majlis Shalawat Nurul Mustofa in fortifying youth morality is by using an emotional approach so that they have self-motivation in leaving all the wrong behaviors and doing good deeds or positive attitudes.Keyword: Da'wah, Moral, Youth

This ethnographic study uses a phenomenological approach to better understand how Appalachian Trail (AT) and Long Trail (LT) thru-hikers create meaning and make sense of their experiences while hiking. Drawing on participant observation and in-depth interviews with 13 hikers, I analyze hikers’ initial reasons for hiking, their reflections while on the trail, and the impacts thru-hiking had on their self-concepts and social lives. Key findings demonstrate how life on the trail contrasts with hikers’ everyday lives in society and thus suggest ways that their experiences on the AT/LT may give insight into nature, community life, personal change, and the process of personal reflection. In particular, this study suggests that long-distance hiking builds personal skills and confidence. Further, this research uses a phenomenological approach as well as the concepts of liminality and communitas to analyze the creation of an alternative trail subculture and new personal identities on the trail, including trail families.

This study aims to discuss the people's understanding of the immortality of pious people in the funeral complex of Lasem Jami’ mosque, and the values embodied in the surrounding community’s daily lives. Based on the phenomenological approach, wherein data is obtained through participant observation and in-depth interviews, the results show that people's belief in immortality is based on their beliefs on the person’s piety, both ritually and socially. It can be seen from the community ways to always put the pious person in an honorable position, through various rituals such as pilgrimage, haul, selametan, and tawasulan. The community beliefs on good deeds will not be broken off after people’s death, becoming their basis to understand in immortality. Immortality can only be obtained by people who can control their bodies and reduce their egos (tazkiyyatun nafs). Immortal pious people are understood to have power and will after their death. This immortal power is believed to be able to provide blessings for the prayers they offered. The ability of the pious people to "accept" the demand is permeable indicates the existence of an immortal will. Hereby, emerge the ethical values, blessing, and multiculturalism in the daily life practices of the surrounding communities.
