The article is devoted to the study of the influence of bureaucracy on job performance. The main purpose of the research is to assess the place of bureaucracy in the company’s management system and to identify factors that reduce the quality of work. Systematization of literary sources and approaches to solving the problem of inefficient work of state authorities showed a low level of research on these issues, a high level of bureaucracy in the country, and significant shortcomings in the personnel management policy. The survey research design was employed in the study, and questionnaires served as the major instrument of data collection. Two theories were adopted – Max Weber’s bureaucratic theory and Fredrick Herzberg two-factor theory of motivation. Methodological tools of the study were the analytical method, the method of logical generalization and synthesis, the survey method, the period of the study was 1999-2018. The subject of the study was the Bayelsa State Civil Service, Nigeria. The data were from the Ministries (Mainstream) Departments, Extra-ministerial Departments, and Agencies. Findings reveal that job performance begets productivity as a result of motivation. That lack of training also hampers job performance. Again, that in the eyes of strict rules and regulations without compliance which results in punishment can also slow down the performance of work, and that, negative attitude of workers can tilt their behavior against job performance. Upon these, the study recommends that civil service rules and regulations should be made flexible, workers should be motivated and incorporated into decision-making process and employees should be given special training that will help enhance their job performance and finally, workers need to be recognized whenever they exhibit excellence in the discharge of the duties. Keywords: bureaucracy, job performance, efficiency, and effectiveness.

The study is devoted to the analysis of the efficiency of use and the effectiveness of disclosing the intellectual capital (IC) of a trading company operating in the market of the Russian Federation. The subject of the research is an assessment of the quality of disclosure of information about the IC company involved in the creation of financial results of activities and the growth of the company’s value. The study examines the assessment of IC and the search for links between the involvement of IC in the formation of the financial result of a trading company and the degree of its reflection in the company’s annual reports. Methods of using intellectual value-added coefficients (VAIC) such as the trademark logo (written as ™), Calculated Intangible Value (CIV) and content analysis of the company’s annual reports are used to assess the IC and its elements. The influence of IC and its components, on the financial results of a trading company are also investigated and calculated using various methods. It is shown that there are no statistically significant relationships between the assessments of IC and its elements obtained using financial ratios, and those obtained using content analysis. This indicates that the opinions and assessments of the heads of a trading company regarding IC are formed regardless of the size of IC involved in the formation of economic results and testifies to the absence of an effective investment management policy in the studied company. Some of the results obtained confirm the trends in IC structures previously observed for companies in other industries. The results also indicate that the existing system for preparing annual reports does not sufficiently consider the size, dynamics and efficiency of using the intangible assets of a trading company. The results of this study are likely to be useful to management and academics.

Purpose The concept of leader–member exchange (LMX) is well accepted in the service industry. This study examines how the quality of LMX helps hotels to achieve desirable outcomes, such as innovative behavior and job performance. The model was developed based on the LMX theory, and considers the relationship among the quality of LMX, employee engagement, innovative behavior and job performance. Design/methodology/approach The model was tested on employees of hotels in South Korea using a survey method. Data were analyzed using frequency, reliability, confirmatory factor, correlation and structural equation modeling analyses. Findings LMX significantly influenced job engagement and innovative behavior but did not significantly affect organization engagement. Job engagement significantly affected organization engagement and innovative behavior but did not significantly influence job performance. Organization engagement significantly influenced job performance but did not significantly affect innovative behavior. Job performance was significantly influenced by innovative behavior. The subject of research is the global economy perceived through the prism of its conditions and transport challenges that its development is currently generating. The author justifies the hypothesis that transport being a lever of globalization processes and a stimulator of the development of the global economy requires improvement, and in all dimensions of its activity on an international scale. For this purpose, basic barriers and threats of transport and logistics that are or may appear in the global economy in the near future were identified. The potential effects resulting from this reason for the global economy and its selected sectors, mainly trade were also indicated. It also identifies actions that should be taken to eliminate or reduce existing transport barriers, including mainly infrastructure barriers, which should lead to an increase in the efficiency and effectiveness of the transport sector on a global scale. The publication uses the studies and reports of international organizations such as the WTO, WB, WEF regarding the subject under study. The obtained research results allowed to formulate conclusions that, firstly, the transport infrastructure and low quality of transport services are still a significant barrier to the development of many economies – including the world’s leading ones – and, secondly, that it is necessary to undertake coherent, internationally coordinated stimulating activities for transport development on a global scale. Transport is becoming a factor determining further growth of competitiveness and ensuring the expected level of facilitation in world trade and the required efficiency of functioning of global supply chains.

Abstract Background Pregnancy loss is typically experienced as a traumatic, critical event, which may lead to secondary psychological health disorders. Its burden involves both the experience of loss and related medical issues, which are associated with pain, hospitalization, limitation in one’s social roles, decreased sense of security, and changes in one’s perceived quality of life. The purpose of the present study was to evaluate levels of quality of life (QoL), social support and self-efficacy among women who had suffered a miscarriage. Methods The study was performed using a diagnostic survey method with questionnaires administered to 610 patients hospitalized due to spontaneous pregnancy loss in hospitals in Lublin (Poland). The instruments used were: the Berlin Social Support Scales (BSSS), the Generalized Self-Efficacy Scale (GSES), the WHOQoL–BREF questionnaire, and a standardized interview questionnaire. Results Respondents rated their overall QoL (3.90 points) higher than their overall perceived health (3.66). In terms of social support, the highest scores were noted for perceived available instrumental support (M = 3.78), perceived available emotional support (M = 3.68) and actually received support (M = 3.60). The mean generalized self-efficacy score among the women after pregnancy loss was 30.29. Respondents’ QoL was significantly correlated with multiple social support subscales and self-efficacy (p < 0.05). Conclusions Women after a miscarriage perceive their overall QoL as better than their overall health, while reporting the poorest QoL in the psychological domain. They also have a high level of self-efficacy. Regarding the types of social support, perceived available support, both instrumental and emotional, and actually received support was rated highly. Social support and self-efficacy contributed to better perceived QoL among the respondents.

Abstract Several studies have been written on the subject of animals in the Ottoman Empire, with a focus on dogs in particular. Most of these studies cover the subject through various sources, including history books, biographies, travelogues, and diaries. Although studying the issue via these sources is important, several works written in the Ottoman period, especially distinct treatises, provide more concrete information on the subject. These treatises have the unique quality of providing insight into many points, especially with relevance to the concepts on which the scholars and thinkers of the period examined the human-animal relationship, and also the arguments they advanced to establish this relationship. One such treatise was written by Mustaqīmzāde (d. 1202/1788) in the 12th/18th century. This treatise deals with many issues, especially the human-dog relationship, the characteristics dogs have, why people should be compassionate towards dogs, and the problems of having a negative attitude towards dogs. In this article, I give a brief biography of Mustaqīmzāde, summarize the changing attitude of Ottomans towards dogs, discuss the content of Mustaqīmzāde’s treatise, and finally translate it into English and present an edition of the text.
