Descritores: COVID-19; Cuidado Paliativo; Enfermagem.FIRST CASE OF COVID-19 IN AN ONCOLOGICAL PALLIATIVE CARE UNIT: EXPERIENCE REPORTObjective: To report the experience of nursing care to the first patient in palliative care oncology with COVID-19, in Rio de Janeiro. It is a descriptive study with quantitative approach that analyzed 151 medical records of patients admitted to an ICU, from September 2014 to February 2015, whose 48 hour and discharge notes were evaluated. Data revealed notes with poor content, which did not express the patients’ situation, nor the nursing care provided. Data concerning date, time, and patient identification were adequate. However, the COREN number and the professional’s signature raised concern given the high percentage of non-compliance regarding ethical and legal aspects. Nursing notes did not reflect the severity of patients, nor the dynamics in the ICUDescriptors: Adolescent, Nursing, HospitalizationADOLESCENTE EN PERSPECTIVA DE LOS PROFESIONALES DE ENFERMERÍAComprender la óptico del profesional de enfermería de hospitalización de los adolescentes. This research has as general theme "Nursing care in palliative care in pediatric oncology", an approach that needs to be further discussed due to the need to prepare nursing professionals working in the pediatric sector with cancer patients who are terminally. Thus, an informative text was produced with information based on authors who have already conducted research on this theme, with a qualitative approach, because this is a Bibliographic research. To guide this research, the general objective was to identify the knowledge and reactions of nursing professionals in pediatric cancer care and as specific objectives to identify the perceptions and feelings that permeate pediatric nursing practice in relation to cancer, treatment, and its implications and to know the care/care activities aimed at children hospitalized in the pediatric oncology sector. It is concluded that the courses directed to nursing need to offer disciplines that prepare these professionals to deal with pediatric patients who are in terminal state, preparing them to comfort the family in the face of the failure of the treatments that the patient underwent.

Providing palliative care depends on the nurse having strong interpersonal skills and clinical knowledge and is informed by respect for the person and the ethical principles of autonomy, beneficence, nonmaleficence, and justice. The genuine, warm, and compassionate relationship of a nurse with his or her patient is frequently a healing relationship even in the face of death. It is a combination of state-of-the art clinical competence with fidelity to the patient, the ability to listen and remain present in the face of much suffering and distress, and effective communication. It is the nurse who provides much of the care and support to patients and families throughout a disease trajectory and the one who is more likely to be present at the time of death than any other health professional.

The aim of this study was to describe the experiences and practices of nurses providing palliative and end of life care. The study was conducted in the palliative care unit of a territory hospital in Turkey. The sample consisted of 11 nurses who had been working as palliative care nurses for at least one year. The face to face interview method was used to collect data, with a semi-structured in-depth individual interview. 5 main themes and 24 sub-themes were emerged in relation to the experiences and practices of the nurses. The majority of participant nurses pointed that inadequacy in the number of nurses, secondary nursing care activities, refusal of treatment, cultural and ethical problems were barriers in the provision of nursing care. They frequently experienced ethical issues when caring for end of life patients, and for this reason they felt the need for ethics counselling which they could consult.

Among contact sports, the practice of martial arts offers a greater risk of causing dental trauma and fractures as contact with the face is more frequent. The primary objective of the research is to evaluate the incidence of mouthguard use, and the secondary objective is to verify which type has a greater predominance and the difficulties in its use correlating to the type of mouthguard used. A documentary study was carried out with 273 athletes of different contact sports, among them: MMA, Boxing, Muay Thai, Jiu-Jitsu, and Taekwondo of the city of Campos dos Goytacazes, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. It was concluded that the most commonly used mouthguard is PB Boils and Bites - Type II and its level of approval is poor, interfering with the athletes’ performance, mainly in relation to the breathing factor.

Objective: This study aimed to analyze the presence of lesions in the skull and face and the associated factors in pedestrian victims of traffic accidents. Methods: A cross-sectional, descriptive-analytical study carried out through the analysis of medical records of pedestrian victims of traffic accidents in an emergency service in the city of Campina Grande, Brazil, during the year of 2016. Information was collected regarding gender, age group, day of the week, time of the accident, type of vehicle involved, presence of trauma to the skull and face, and outcomes. The Chi-square and Fisher's Exact tests were used, with a significance level of 5%. Results: A total of 1,884 medical records were evaluated, out of which 7.1% (n = 133) involved pedestrians. Men were the most frequent victims (68.4%), and victims of age 60 years old or over (30.5%) predominated. Almost one-third of the cases were recorded during the weekends (30.5%), and the most prevalent time was at night (52.7%). Regarding the type of vehicle involved, motorcycles predominated (47.4%). Head trauma was present in 37.6% of victims, while facial injuries corresponded to 8.2%. In 12% of cases, the victims died. The variables of gender, age group, occurrence on weekends, and trauma to the face showed a statistically significant association with the occurrence of traffic accidents (Chi-square test; p<0.05). Conclusion: Among pedestrian victims of traffic accidents, there is a predominance of men aged 65 years or over. Accidents are frequent at night, and motorcycles are the main vehicles involved. The presence of trauma to the skull and face regions is high.

Currently, the 2019 Coronavirus Disease pandemic has caused serious damage to health throughout the world. Its contagious capacity has forced the governments of the world to decree isolation and quarantine to try to control the pandemic. The consequences that it leaves in all sectors of society have been disastrous. However, technological advances have allowed people to continue their different activities to some extent while maintaining isolation. Universities have great penetration in the use of technology, but they have also been severely affected. To give continuity to education, universities have been forced to move to an educational model based on synchronous encounters, but they have maintained the methodology of a face-to-face educational model, what has caused several problems in the learning of students. This work proposes the transition to a hybrid educational model, provided that this transition is supported by data analysis to identify the new needs of students. The knowledge obtained is contrasted with the performance presented by the students in the face-to-face modality and the necessary parameters for the transition to this modality are clearly established. In addition, the guidelines and methodology of online education are considered in order to take advantage of the best of both modalities and guarantee learning.

AbstractObjective:Late or non-referral of patients to specialist palliative care (SPC) services may affect patients' and their carers' quality of care. General practitioners (GPs) are key professionals in linking people with SPC. The aim of this article is to assess GPs' perceptions and SPC referrals for their patients with advanced cancer and differences between metropolitan (M GPs) and non-metropolitan GPs (NM GPs).Method:Self-report survey mailed to a stratified random sample of 1,680 Australian GPs was used.Results:Thirty-one percent (469) of eligible GPs returned surveys. More M GPs than NM GPs reported referring >60% of their patients for SPC (p = 0.014); and that a more comprehensive range of SPC services was available. The most frequently reported referral prompts were: presence of terminal illness (M GPs, 71%, NM GPs, 66%, ns (not significant)); future need for symptom control (69% vs. 59%, ns) and uncontrolled physical symptoms (63% vs. 54%, ns). Reasons for not referring were: doctor's ability to manage symptoms (62% vs. 68%, ns) and the absence of symptoms (29% vs. 18%, p = 0.025). Higher referral was associated with: having a palliative care physician or consultative service available; agreeing that all patients with advanced cancer should be referred, and agreeing that with SPC, the needs of the family are better met.Significance of results:Referrals for SPC were primarily disease-related rather than for psychological and emotional concerns. Measures are needed to encourage referrals based upon psychosocial needs as well as for physical concerns, and to support GPs caring for people with advanced cancer in areas with fewer comprehensive SPC services.

BACKGROUND: Standardization of documentation has enabled the use of medical records as a primary tool for evaluating health care functions and obtaining appropriate credit points for medical centres. However, previous studies have shown that the quality of medical records in emergency departments is unsatisfactory.AIM: The aim of this study was improving the nursing care documentation in an emergency department, in Iran.MATERIAL AND METHODS: This collaborative action research study was carried out in two phases to improve nursing care documentation in cooperation with individuals involved in the process, from February 2015 to December 2017 in an affiliated academic hospital in Iran. The first phase featured virtual training, an educational workshop, and improvements to the hospital information system. The second phase involved the recruitment of human resources, the implementation of continuous codified training, the establishment of an appropriate reward and penalty system, and the review of patient education forms.RESULTS: The interventions improved nursing documentation quality score of 73.20%, which was the highest accreditation ranking provided by Iran’s Ministry of Health and Medical Education in 2017. In other words, this study caused a 32% improvement in the quality of nursing care documentation in the hospital.CONCLUSION: The appropriate practices for improving nursing care documentation are employee participation, managerial accountability, nurses’ adherence to documentation standards, improved leadership style, and continuous monitoring and control.
