Lockdowns and other counter-measures introduced by governments around the globe in the aftermath of the outbreak of coronavirus dealt a serious blow to tourism and the hospitality industry. Faced with bankruptcy and closure, tourism-related businesses raised the alarm and called for government support, which in turn triggered numerous comments from online audiences. Focusing on such online discourses and the incivility they abound with, the present article aims to address various aspects of the interface between the crisis, online communication and social polarization, as well as the constitutive and constituted nature of discourse. We bring under scrutiny the response of the online public to appeals from the tourism industry, working on the assumption that these Internet comments, in terms of content and form, have been considerably shaped by three factors, namely (1) public perception of the tourism industry, (2) culture-related emotionality patterns, as well as (3) techno-discursive design and the resulting dynamics of communication within cyberspace. Adopting the Media Proximization Approach (MPA), together with the CDA perspective on discourse and representation, and drawing on insights from studies on online communication we analyze and discuss the corpus of online comments (53,043 words) following 21 articles on the crisis within the tourism industry in Poland published between 6 March and 23 June 2020. Our findings show that the response of the online public, which is predominantly negative and at times hostile, reflects the socio-political polarization in Poland, enhanced by the sense of threat to life and health as well as the scarcity of resources. Cyberspace and its technological affordances considerably affect solidarity and disunity dynamics through representational and interpersonal proximization, enabling creation and perpetuation of stereotypes along with values and emotions. Acting as proximization triggers, nomination, predication and argumentation strategies both reflect and shape knowledge and axiological preferences, which constitute an integral part of the construction of social reality.

Digital news outlets rely on a variety of outside contributors, from freelance journalists, to political commentators, to executives and politicians. These external dependencies create a network among news outlets, traced along the contributors they share. Using connections between outlets, we demonstrate how contributors’ publishing trajectories tend to align with outlet political leanings. We also show how polarized clustering of outlets translates to differences in the topics of news covered and the style and tone of articles published. In addition, we demonstrate how contributors who cross partisan divides tend to focus on less explicitly political topics. This work addresses an important gap in the media polarization literature, by highlighting how structural factors on the production side of news media create an ecosystem shaped by political leanings, independent of the priorities of any one person or organization.

This study examines Australian teachers (n = 268) and parents’ (n = 206) self-reported perceptions of education news coverage and how the coverage affects them. Overall, the participants reported a perception that news coverage of teachers, schools, the education system and standardised testing was generally negative in tone. Participants reported typically feeling demoralised by negative stories and inspired by positive stories. A high importance was placed upon the public perception of education by participants. However, trust in the media reporting of educational issues was low. An exception to this general pattern of findings was that participants did not place as much importance upon the public perception of standardised testing and reported being less affected by negative or positive stories on that topic compared to the other education aspects. This research is one of the few studies to investigate the potential emotional impact that news coverage of education can have on media consumers.

The results of this study indicate: (1) Characteristics of waste in Pakraman Padangtegal Village consisted of 83.88% organic waste, 7.24% plastic waste, 4.42% paper waste, 2.22% bottle waste, glass waste at 1.28% and metal waste at 0.96%; (2) public perception in waste management in Pakraman Village, Padangtegal that most of the people in Pakraman Village, Padangtegal, already know about the definition of waste and the danger of waste if it is not managed properly. Besides that the community also knows the difference between organic and inorganic waste so that the process of sorting waste in the place provided can run well, and the community's perception of waste management services has gone well with the transportation of waste twice a day; (3) the participation of the Pakraman Padangtegal Village community in waste management has played a role in various stages of waste management, starting from the sorting, garbage collection and garbage disposal, which complies with waste regulations and maintains the quality of the environment in Padangtegal Pakraman Village. The participation of the tourism industry in the process of waste management in Pakraman Village, Padangtegal, can be seen as being involved in the process of sorting waste and paying monthly fees and waste fees. The community participation in the waste management process is to help the government to socialize the waste management process by carrying out waste collection activities every week and provide a place for the waste management process. Suggestions in this study are that waste managers will immediately add facilities and infrastructure for waste transportation and accelerate the expansion of waste management in the village of Pakraman Padangtegal.   Keywords: Waste Management System, Pakraman Village

The article deals with the development of media spaces of virtual fan communities. The aim of the research was to reveal the specifics of online communication of virtual fan communities with the audience. The paper investigates the dialectics of the concepts of fan-community, media space, fandom. The article considers the main approaches to studying media space by Russian and foreign authors. The study describes the traditional offline communication practices of the fandoms. The authors substantiate the problem of the existence of a variety of communication channels of the fan communities with the audience (negative interpretation of content, limitations in monetization and evaluation of the effectiveness of communication practices, the growth of costs for the diversification of content, taking into account the features of different platforms). The paper identifies the trend of centralization of fan communities and the possibilities of technological support of user experience at all stages of the communication process as part of the use of online platform. The article gives an analysis of the media environment and media spaces of South Korea’s fan communities on the example of the South Korean case of the development of the fandom media space in the format of the Weverse mobile application. The study considers the techniques of interaction with the audience in the offline interaction limitations. The authors formulate conclusions about the specifics of the extended functionality of the platform, about the provided ways of organizing the virtual fan media space with the help of the platform; about the coming trend of transferring fan activities into the virtual environment.

Tulisan ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis aktivitas hubungan media yang dilakukan oleh Universitas Islam Indonesia, saat kejadian Tragedi Diksar Mapala UII. Kejadian tersebut merupakan krisis karena tidak diduga, terjadi secara mendadak, dan menimbulkan gangguan pada aktivitas dan citra organisasi. Hubungan media adalah salah satu aktivitas yang penting dalam manajemen krisis, karena media massa mampu mempengaruhi persepsi masyarakat terhadap satu organisasi dalam krisis. Dalam situasi krisis sendiri, persepsi dapat menjadi lebih kuat daripada fakta. Batasan hubungan media dalam tulisan ini adalah dalam aspek penyediaan informasi yang terdiri dari : (1) kualitas narasumber organisasi dan (2) cara organisasi dalam membantu liputan media. Data penelitian ini diperoleh dengan mewawancarai wartawan dari media di Yogyakarta yang meliput Diksar Mapala UII. Hasilnya menunjukkan bahwa media membutuhkan narasumber pimpinan tertinggi universitas. Informasi yang diperoleh dari humas universitas dirasa masih kurang cukup. Dalam hal upaya organisasi membantu aktivitas liputan, UII dinilai masih kurang cepat dan kurang terbuka dalam memberikan informasi. The purpose of this article is to analyse the media relations activities by Islamic University of Indonesia (UII), related to crisis "Tragedi Diksar Mapala UII". This incident lead to crisis because it is unpredictable, happen suddenly, disturb the organizational activities, and make the organization's image being at risk. Media relations is one important activites in crisis management. It is because mass media could affect the public perception toward an organization. In crisis situation, perception could be stronger than the fact. The limitation of media relations in this article are information subsidies. Information subsidies consist of : (1) the quality of news sources that provided by the organization, and (2) how organization facilitate the news gathering process by the media. The data for this article is being collected from interview with journalist from the mass media in Yogyakarta. The results are media want the top management of the universities as the news sources. The information that being provided by public relations is not enough. The university also lack of quickness and lack of openess.

With the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic, the tourism industry faced a crisis that could be the worst in history. In recent years, the tourism industry has been one of the fastest-growing industries, sometimes faster than the world economy as a whole. 2019 has brought unprecedented changes to the world order, affecting all socio-ecological and economic ties. What are the consequences of and will have global tourism in connection with the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic, which countries and regions of the world will suffer the greatest losses, what threatens and what are the benefits of the tourism crisis that will bring a "new order" to the tourism industry, what innovative management anti-crisis measures should be applied by world governments and non-governmental organizations to overcome the unprecedented tourism crisis - all these issues remain acute and have identified the research topic. The paper examines the methodological developments and recommendations for overcoming the tourism crisis in Europe caused by the pandemic virus COVID-19, namely, the article identifies the basics and consequences of the pandemic impact on market capital on the example of tourism in Europe and the world, shows that the global tourism industry is one of the main factors in the formation of market capital, studied market capital as a component of intellectual capital on the example of tourism in the EU, outlined the prospects for global tourism, developed a system of measures to overcome the global crisis through tourism SWOT-analysis. Namely: enhanced multilateral cooperation and strong support are important for the resumption of tourism; the speed of adaptation of governments at all levels and the private sector involved in the tourism sector and the ability to respond quickly and adapt to the crisis; providing targeted and affordable government support as quickly and efficiently as possible for vulnerable tourism enterprises, workers and tourists; ensuring policy clarity and taking measures to limit uncertainty; invention and development of more sustainable and sustainable (socio-ecological-economic) models of tourism; development of tourism education and legislation.

Aim. The presented study aims to analyze the current state of the Russian tourism industry in times of crisis.Tasks. The author identifies systemic contradictions in the development of Russian tourism; determines factors affecting the tourism sector; formulates the problems of tourism development during the crisis; proposes ways out of the crisis for Russian tourism.Methods. Over the course of the study, the author uses general scientific methods of cognition, such as comparison, deduction and induction, analysis, generalization and systematization.Results. The identified systemic contradictions in the development of Russian tourism and factors affecting the development of tourism in the Russian Federation allow the author to formulate the problems hindering the development of Russian tourism, such as underdeveloped infrastructure, lack of consideration for the environmental burden on tourist attractions, low innovative activity in the tourism sector, low recognition of Russian tourist brands in foreign markets and domestically, inefficient tourism management system at the national and municipal level, poor training of personnel in the field of tourism, lack of social tourism, insufficient government support under crisis conditions. That said, the solution to each problem is of nationwide significance.Conclusions. Today, Russia has great potential for the development of both domestic and inbound tourism. However, the reality of the economy and international relations, especially during a crisis, leads to Russia’s tourist potential being largely unfulfilled amid strong competition from the foreign tourism market. The proposed solutions to the problems of domestic tourism outlined in the study make it possible to facilitate the development of the tourism sector and enhance competitive potential.

The article presents the results of a study of the impact of the coronavirus pandemic on the development of the tourism and hospitality industry in the global and national aspects. The purpose of this article is to summarize and systematize the main changes and trends in tourism and hospitality as a result of the impact of the coronavirus pandemic. During the research, general scientific methods of the theory and practice of researching socio-economic phenomena and processes were used: logical, dialectical, systemic, process and situational approaches, and methods of analysis, synthesis, abstraction, and others. According to the results of the study, several main trends in changes in consumer behavior were summarized and formulated, as well as in what began to be offered by the enterprises of the tourism and hospitality industry in response to changes in consumer behavior. Examples of how the coronavirus pandemic affected the organization of the very process of providing services by hotels to ensure the safety of guests in hotels and other accommodation facilities, including in terms of increasing costs for all types of resources of these enterprises. Particular attention in the article is paid to assessing the effectiveness of government support measures and stimulating demand for tourist and hotel services in the Russian Federation. Also, based on the results of the study, the prospects for adapting the enterprise management system of the hospitality and tourism industry to work in the conditions of the coronavirus pandemic and after its completion were substantiated — the change in the forms of organization of work of personnel, monitoring and evaluation of the results of their activities was described, and the importance of forming and maintaining consumer confidence in enterprises was substantiated. tourism and hospitality industry.

Although the literature on COVID-19 is expanding, particularly in relation to crisis management responses pursued by large tourism enterprises, currently few studies exist on the responses of small tourism firms and more specifically of the crisis management practices of small and microaccom modation establishments. The aim in this study is to investigate the business management responses of small tourism firms to the COVID-19 pandemic crisis and restrictions in South Africa. Themes of concern are whether enterprises have been able to sustain operations and adopt certain coping mechanisms or management strategies to mitigate the pandemic’s impact. The article reports on an interview survey of small and microenterprises engaged in accommodation services (N = 75) in South Africa under lockdown restrictions as a means of assessing the responses and coping strategies during an unprecedented crisis of this core component of the country’s tourism industry. Among key findings are that small and microlodging firms that have suffered severe financial losses because of the COVID-19 shock have few viable mechanisms to cope with the impact of the crisis and that government support to aid recovery has been insufficient in South Africa. This research contributes to the limited body of international scholarship that examines how small and microaccommodation firms, a major group and contributor of many economies, are navigating the unprecedented COVID-19 environment.

The article is devoted to the development of such direction of modern communication science as the analysis of both intra-sports interactions and "near-sports" space of communication, i.e. communication channels between sports and adjacent social segments. A special place belongs to the media, which not only reflect a sports life, but also shape its public perception, interests, and assessment. It is reflected the stages and models of interaction between sports and the media, starting with pre-revolutionary print media and ending with Internet communications, the role of media in the sport’s images formation, its position in the sociocultural space. The process of sports mediatization, accompanied by the complication of its interaction with other communicative discourses, is considered.
