This paper concentrates on dialogue with postmodernism and religion while looking at some of the core ideas of postmodernism and the possibility of making it a reading tool for Islam, precisely for the benefit of Islamic studies, in contemporary society with its various implications. With the descriptive-analysis method this paper proves two things. First, that postmodernism as a movement of thought is not in direct contact with Islam. It is a response to the doctrine of modernism and traditional Christian doctrine. His criticism of religion is addressed to European Christians. However, the impact of his dissolution of value doctrine becomes nihilism, has disrupted the theological beliefs of religions, including Islam especially in the case of the spread of atheistic-inclined ideology. Secondly, as a critical philosophy, postmodernism contributes a deconstruction method to dismantle the establishment and the absoluteness of thought. In Islamic studies, the deconstructive approach is widely used by contemporary Islamic thinkers.

Festival is a product of a culture that develops according to the needs and times, including the Taylagan Festival. Taylagan Festival is one of the most important annual rituals for the Russian Buryat Shamans. In the contemporary era, this festival has also been performed for tourists. By using Roland Barthes’s semiotic theory, this research explores the impact of the changes of Taylagan Festival meanings for Russian Buryat contemporary society. At the same time, Eric Hobsbawm’s “The Invention of Tradition" (1992) is used to investigate the inventory of Taylagan Festival traditions, based on qualitative data collected through intensive interviews for selected informants. By using the descriptive analysis method, the research result shows that the change in the sacred values of the Russian Buryat Shamans in the Taylagan Festival has been started since the presence of Neo-shamans as a form of cultural adaptation during the Contemporary Era, which is known to be more modern and active in social and cultural activities.

Harun Nasution is known as a pioneer of academic Islamic studies in Indonesia, including the study of Islamic mysticism. However, H.M. Rasjidi criticized Harun Nasution. H.M. Rasijidi by assuming his views deviate from Islamic teachings. Based on this polemic, this paper focused on two main topics. First, the problem of legitimacy of Islamic mysticism. Second, al-ittiḥâd. This paper used a descriptive-analysis method with reference to the works of Harun Nasution and H.M. Rasjidi as primary data. Then, the data is compared by referring to supporting references to analyze their views further. This paper shows two conclusions according to the focus of this paper. First, H.M. Rasjidi considers that Islamic mysticism is not in accordance with Islamic teachings, because it emphasizes the aspects of influence from outside Islam. While, Harun Nasution viewed mysticism as an important aspect of Islam, because it was considered to have a strong source from the al-Qur’ân dan Ḥadîth. Second, Harun Nasution views that al-ittiḥâd is the main goal of Islamic mysticism which philosophically describes the bond of servants to God. While, H.M. Rasjidi rejects the concept of al-ittiḥâd and is deemed deviating from Islamic teachings because it is considered to equate God with beings.
