Abstract The article presents the person and works of Georgy Voronoi (1868-1908), the inventor of an original method of diagrams, a student of the famous mathematician Andrey Markov. Georgy Voronoi graduated from the Department of Physics and Mathematics at the University of St. Petersburg, and subsequently worked as a professor of mathematics at the Imperial University of Warsaw. One of his students was the future outstanding Polish mathematician Wacław Sierpiński. In his brief lifetime G. Voronoi published several important scientific articles on number theory. In an almost 100 page paper in French published in 1908 he described a method of diagrams, or polygons, which became known as the method of Voronoi diagrams. In the digital age this method and its modifications found new applications. The entry “Voronoi” is getting more popular on the Internet, and the method of Voronoi diagrams and its modifications are widely described in handbooks and scientific articles. The article presents application of the method in the most popular computer programs from the Geographic Information System (GIS) group and presents examples of its usage in research on geographic space in various scientific disciplines.

The article presents two relatively new formats of philosophical practice: a philosophical diary and an online marathon. The authors of the article were developers of both formats; we have tested these forms at the university with a student audience and outside university. As a result of the study, we came to the conclusion that the philosophical diary can be an effective form of a person’s work with the self; along with the psychotherapeutic diary, this is a modern format of practice of care of the self. The online marathon is a format of group practice when you analyze and reflect on various existentials together with the facilitator of the marathon and other participants. Both formats fit into the Internet environment. The final result of our study was the formulation of an original method of philosophical practice, which we called philosophical meditations.

Chaucer is known as a philosophical poet. He translated Boethius’s Consolation of Philosophy from Latin to English. Do his works reveal familiarity with what went on in philosophy at Oxford and Cambridge universities in the fourteenth century? The chapter summarizes typical features of the work of the so-called ‘Oxford Calculators’ (also known as the ‘Merton School’) and contemporary philosophers at the University of Paris (who, together, may be called the fourteenth-century ‘moderni’) and contrasts these features with the work of John Wyclif, which became influential later in the fourteenth century. Among the features considered are disputations on sophismata, use of the logica moderna and technical measure languages, demonstrative reasoning, and optimism about the capabilities of scientific disciplines. Resonating more with Wycliffites are negative images of clerics.

Problem. The problem for Ukrainian universities is the annual enrollment of students in the amount that allows the university to exist and fulfill its purpose. In the conditions of a significant decrease in the number of graduates in our country and an increase in the number of higher educational institutions, the competition among universities for entrants has sharply increased. Goal. It is necessary to create an information system to inform high school students throughout Ukraine about the existence of the Kharkiv National Automobile and Highway University, its specialties, opportunities, advantages, etc. Perhaps the consequence of such widespread information will be an increase in the number of applicants at our university. Methodology. When developing an information system for fast automatic sending of messages to many thousands of addresses of educational institutions of Ukraine of the III level of accreditation, it was impossible to rely on existing analogues, because such were not found in the information space. We used the method of synthesis of information systems on the technical task. Results. An information system has been developed for fast sending of messages to ten thousand addresses of educational institutions of the III level of accreditation. The developed information system searches for the corresponding addresses on the Internet and enters them into the computer database. The basis of the developed system is the database "Graduate of Ukraine", which contains the necessary information about almost all educational institutions with III level of accreditation. The algorithm of work of the developed information system and a kind of the interface of a software complex are resulted. In addition, many results of the system are presented: the created tables with data on educational institutions, the developed inquiries and reports, e-mails with invitations to the Open Doors Day. Originality. The developed system is an original development in Ukraine. No mention was found of an information system that creates and generates database tables and then uses them for programmed actions. Practical value. The developed information system is already used to provide students of graduation and other classes of all educational institutions of Ukraine of the III level of accreditation with information about our university; regarding the specialties offered by the university and the corresponding professions; regarding open days, preparatory courses and much more.

The article proposes a model for forecasting the success of student’s learning. The model is a Markov process with continuous time, such as the process of “death and reproduction”. As the parameters of the process, the intensities of the processes of obtaining and assimilating information are offered, and the intensity of the process of assimilating information takes into account the attitude of the student to the subject being studied. As a result of applying the model, it is possible for each student to determine the probability of a given formation of ownership of the material being studied in the near future. Thus, in the presence of an automated information system of the university, the implementation of the model is an element of the decision support system by all participants in the educational process. The examples given in the article are the results of an experiment conducted at the Institute of Space and Information Technologies of Siberian Federal University under conditions of blended learning, that is, under conditions when classroom work is accompanied by independent work with electronic resources.

Although use statistics are often used in the assessment of library collections and services, they are of limited value in evaluating the library’s effectiveness as an information system. This essay highlights three concepts from the information retrieval literature—recall, precision, and relevance—and describes a standard of relevance that accounts for the learning goals of the academic community as well as the performance goals of students. It also demonstrates how the academic mission of the university can be incorporated into the assessment and management of the library as an information retrieval system. The discussion concludes with guidelines for the assessment of recall and precision as well as suggestions for the integration of these concepts into library collection development, cataloging/access, reference, and instruction.

The paper analyzes the development status of colleges, the actual problems the graduates meet in the course employment, and the design goals and principles of employee management system. SOA employee management system was designed which based on the above conditions. The system maximizes the information shared with other systems through the implementation of the SOA system. And the system manages the information of graduates efficiently through the internet information platform of local management information system.

Over half of all students enrolling at a particular university in KwaZulu-Natal fail to complete a degree. This article is wanting to determine to what extent the marks they obtain for English and Mathematics at school impact on their probability of graduation at this university. In addressing this problem, other student specific factors associated with their gender, race and the type of school they have attended need also to be properly accounted for. To provide answers for this study, the performance of 24 392 students enrolling at the university over the period 2004 to 2012 was followed until they graduated or dropped out from their studies. A structural equation model was fitted because it allows one to separate a direct effect from that of an indirect effect. Gender, race and school background were found to be very significant with males, Black Africans and students coming from a less privileged school background having a smaller probability associated with eventually graduating from this university. Males tend to perform better than females in Mathematics, with females performing better males in English. More importantly, however, a single percentage point increase in one’s mark for English increases the probability associated with graduating from this university far more than would be the case if their Mathematics mark were to increase by a single percentage point. In the light of these mediated results, perhaps this university should be directing their efforts more towards improving the English (rather than mathematical) literacy of students entering the university.
