The Dynamics of Total Polyphenols, Flavonoids and Antioxidant Activity of Beepollen Collected from Moldavia Area, RomaniaThe analysis sought to study the determination in timp and different conditions (temperature and light) of total polyphenols, flavones, total flavonoids and antioxidant activity from beepollen obtained with pollen colectors from Moldavia, Romania. Two methods vave been used, consisting in different concentrations of the methanolic solvent used. Analyses were performed on fresh pollen, stored for one and two weeks; at 4°C and 22°C; presence or absence of natural light. For every determination, five repetitions were made. There were fluctuations in the amounts of compounds, depending on the storage conditions and on the solvent used. The total polyphenols quantity ranged from 24.73 mg GAE/g to 28.8 mg GAE/g, when the methanolic solvent concentration was 96 % and from 21.67 mg GAE/g to 26.50 mg GAE/g, when the methanolic solvent concentration was 70 %. The flavones detected ranged from 7.23 mg QE/g to 8.93 mg QE/g (methanolic solvent 96%), and from 5.45 mg QE/g to 6.35 mg QE/g (methanolic solvent 70%). Total flavonoids have recorded values between 12.6 mg QE/g and 20.44 mg QE/g for the m.s. of 96%, and between 14.6 mg QE/g and 17.47 mg QE/g for the m.s. of 70%. The detected antiradical activity ranged from 22.68% to 29.78% inhibition (m.s. 96%), respectively from 21.31% to 25.55 % inhibition (m.s. 70%).

Aloe Vera leaves have great potential as an economic supplement with an adequate nutritional profile. The current study aimed to fortify plain (loaf) cakes with Aloe Vera leaf gel (AVG) powder. AVG was freeze-dried to produce Aloe Vera powder (ALP), and four plain (loaf) cakes were prepared with different proportions of ALP (0, 4, 6, and 8%). ALP contained significantly (p < 0.05) more protein (22.23 vs. 12.24), ash (19.83 vs. 0.64), and iron (175 vs. 3.05) than refined wheat flour (RWF). Along with total polyphenols and total flavonoids, ALP demonstrated good antioxidant activity. ALP-cakes and RWF-cakes were also evaluated for their nutritional and functional properties. The addition of 6 and 8% ALP to the formulation increased total polyphenols, total flavonoids, and antioxidant activity in plain (loaf) cakes. Hardness and chewiness increased in ALP-cakes but decreased in RWF-cakes, while cohesiveness and springiness decreased in ALP-cakes. In conclusion, the best formulation was a 4% ALP incorporated cake, and ALP can be supplemented in plain cakes at a rate of up to 8% to improve nutrient value. This is the first study to evaluate the quality characteristics of fortified plain (loaf) cakes using ALP.

AbstractA. hypochondriacus leaves contained ample phytopigments including betalain, anthocyanin, β-xanthin, β-cyanin, and bioactive phytochemicals of interest in the industry of food. We have been evaluating the possibility of utilizing phytopigments of amaranth and bioactive constituents for making drinks. Therefore, we evaluated bioactive phytopigments and compounds including the potentiality of antioxidants in A. hypochondriacus leaves. A. hypochondriacus leaves have abundant protein, carbohydrates, and dietary fiber. We found considerable levels of inorganic minerals including magnesium, calcium, potassium (3.88, 3.01, 8.56 mg g−1), zinc, manganese, copper, iron (16.23, 15.51, 2.26, 20.57 µg g−1), chlorophyll b, chlorophyll ab chlorophyll a (271.08, 905.21, 636.87 μg g−1), scavenging capacity of radicals (DPPH, ABTS+) (33.46, 62.92 TEAC μg g−1 DW), total polyphenols (29.34 GAE μg g−1 FW), β-xanthin, betalain, β-cyanin (584.71, 1,121.93, 537.21 ng g−1), total flavonoids (170.97 RE μg g−1 DW), vitamin C, β-carotene, carotenoids (184.77, 82.34, 105.08 mg 100 g−1) in A. hypochondriacus leaves. The genotypes AHC6, AHC4, AHC11, AHC5, and AHC10 had a good scavenging capacity of radicals. Polyphenols, phytopigments, flavonoids, and β-carotene of A. hypochondriacus had potential antioxidant activity. Extracted juice of A. hypochondriacus can be an ample source of phytopigments and compounds for detoxification of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and attaining nutritional and antioxidant sufficiency.

The article is dealing with evaluation of four fruit maturity stages of 6 selected clones (LKL-3, LKL-14, LKL-19, LKL-33, LKL-96 and LKL-103) of Lonicera kamtschatica (Sevast.) Pojark in relation to total polyphenols, flavonoids content and antioxidant activity of berries. The experiment in 5 replications of each clones has been established in the conditions of Botanical Garden in Nitra (Slovak republic)in 2016. The results of analyses proved that in respect of the total polyphenols content (TPC), the content of flavonoids (FC) and the antioxidant activity the most valuable clones at the stage of full ripened fruit were following: LKL-14 (8.77; 2.57 g/kg FW; 9.07 g/kg), LKL-33 (6.77; 2.84 g/kg FW; 9.16 g/kg) and LKL -3 (8.19; 2.61 g/kg FW; 8.94 g/kg). The results of statistical analyses by one-way analysis of variance proved significant differences among assayed clones in total flavonoids and antioxidant activity of fruit but no differences among content of total polyphenols and assayed stages of fruit maturity.

Mashua (Tropaeolum tuberosum R. & P.) is an Andean crop of high nutritional value and medicinal properties, which presents a great diversity in morphology and color. The aim of the study was to evaluate the content of phenolic compounds and in vitro antioxidant activity of the most economically important mashua accessions in the Puno Region, Peru. Six accessions of mashua (three purplecolored and three yellow-colored) were evaluated. The content of total polyphenols, total flavonoids and identification of phenolic compounds was determined by the Folin-Ciocalteu assay, aluminum chloride colorimetric method and HPLC-DAD, respectively. In vitro antioxidant activity was evaluated using the FRAP and DPPH assays. In general, the purple-colored mashua had a significantly higher content of total polyphenols, total flavonoids, and in vitro antioxidant activity compared to the yellowcolored mashua; being the Tt-23 accession purple-colored (peel/pulp, purple/purple), which presented a significantly higher content of phenolic compounds and in vitro antioxidant activity compared to the other accessions evaluated (P<0.05). Furthermore, a significant correlation was observed between FRAP and DPPH activities with the total content of polyphenols and flavonoids (P<0.01), as well as between FRAP activity and the caffeic acid and rutin levels (P<0.05). These results suggest that purple-colored mashua, particularly the Tt-23 accession (peel/pulp, purple/purple), has better nutraceutical and antioxidant properties due to its higher content of phenolic compounds.

Two wild and three cultivated blueberry varieties (‘Elliot’, ‘Bluecrop’ and ‘Duke’) from Romania were analyzed comparatively in order to determine the total polyphenols, total anthocyanins, total flavonoids content and measuring the antioxidant activity using three different single electron transfer-based assays, Trolox equivalent antioxidant capacity (ABTS), ferric reducing ability (FRAP), 2,2-diphenylpicrylhydrazil radical scavenging capacity (DPPH) and one hydrogen atom transfer-assay, oxygen radical absorbance capacity (ORAC). Total polyphenols content ranged from 424.84 - 819.12 mg GAE/100 g FW, total flavonoids ranged from 84.33-112.5 mg QE /100 g FW and total anthocyanins ranged from 100.58-300.02 C3GE/100g FW. The anthocyanins were separated and quantified using RP-HPLC-DAD. In Vaccinium myrtillus, petunidin-3-glucoside and delphinidin-3-glucoside have the highest contribution to the anthocyanin content while in Vaccinium corymbosum, peonidin-3-galactoside represent the major anthocyanin. Except for ORAC assay (r=0.765), all antioxidant activity values obtained were highly correlated with total polyphenol content (0.923≤ r ≤0.986). Wild blueberries had higher total polyphenols content and also antioxidant activity compared with cultivated ones.

The erection has always symbolized strength and virile health. Erectile dysfunction is undoubtedly a concern as old as humanity. Tamarindus indica L., Guiera senegalensis J.F.Gmel and Ximenia americana L. are commonly used in the traditional treatment of erectile dysfunction by the Bwa community in Mali. The aim of this study was to measure the total polyphenols and flavonoids and then to evaluate the antiradical activity of the extracts (aqueous and hydroalcoholic macerated and decocted) of the organs of these species. The study found that for all species, the hydro-alcoholic macerated extract showed the best results. The polyphenol contents have been 36.85±0.21 mgGAE/g; 32.60±0.25 mgGAE/g and 29.79±0.51 mgGAE/g for Ximenia americana, Tamarindus indica and Guiera senegalensis respectively. The flavonoid contents have been 22.03±0.15 mgQE/g; 17.53±0.02 mgQE/g and 8.03±0.03 mgQE/g for Ximenia americana, Tamarindus indica and Guiera senegalensis respectively. The antiradical activity expressed in IC50 is 37.54±0.75 µg/mL; 52.75±0.71 µg/mL and 54.66±1.14 µg/mL for Ximenia americana, Tamarindus indica and Guiera senegalensis respectively. This study revealed that those plants are rich in total polyphenols and show a good antiradical activity. This wealth would justify their traditional use. The biological tests would be necessary to confirm their use in the treatment of erectile dysfunction. Keywords: Erectile dysfunction, polyphenols, antioxidant activity, Bwatun-Mali.

The curcumin degradation represents a significant limitation for its applications. The stability of free curcumin (FC) and immobilized curcumin in complex particles (ComPs) based on different polysaccharides was studied under the action of several factors. Ultraviolet-visible (UV-VIS) and Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy proved the FC photodegradation and its role as a metal chelator: 82% of FC and between 26% and 39.79% of curcumin within the ComPs degraded after exposure for 28 days to natural light. The degradation half-life (t1/2) decreases for FC when the pH increases, from 6.8 h at pH = 3 to 2.1 h at pH = 9. For curcumin extracted from ComPs, t1/2 was constant (between 10 and 13 h) and depended on the sample’s composition. The total phenol (TPC) and total flavonoids (TFC) content values increased by 16% and 13%, respectively, for FC exposed to ultraviolet light at λ = 365 nm (UVA), whereas no significant change was observed for immobilized curcumin. Antioxidant activity expressed by IC50 (µmoles/mL) for FC exposed to UVA decreased by 29%, but curcumin within ComPs was not affected by the UVA. The bovine serum albumin (BSA) adsorption efficiency on the ComPs surface depends on the pH value and the cross-linking degree. ComPs have a protective role for the immobilized curcumin.

Aim: This study was designed to investigate the phytochemical profile and the cytotoxic activities of the eco-friendly extracts of olive leaves from Chemlali cultivar. Materials and Methods: The Phenolic composition of olive leaves extracts, the antioxidant activity and the cytotoxic effects against MCF-7 and HepG2 cells were determined. Results: Olive leaves extracts showed relevant total polyphenols contents. Oleuropein was the major detected phenolic compound reaching a concentration of 16.9 mg/ml. The antioxidant potential of the studied extracts varied from 23.7 to 46.5mM Trolox equivalents as revealed by DPPH and ABTS assays. Cytotoxicity experiments showed similar trends for both HepG2 and MCF-7 cells with the infusion extract being the most active. Conclusion: This study denotes that olive leaves may have great potential as endless bioresource of valuable bioactive compounds which may have a wide application.

Recent trends in the food industry combined with novel methods in agriculture could transform rowan into a valuable raw material with potential technological applications. Thus, the aim of this research was to investigate the content of bioactive compounds in its fruits and to assess the color and antioxidant stability of the extracts prepared from such fruits during various thermal treatments and at different pH and ionic strength values. Various spectrophotometric methods, HPLC, and capillary electrophoresis were used to quantify the concentrations of bioactive compounds—polyphenols, carotenoids, organic acids, and to assess antioxidant activity and color. The results show that rowan berries contain circa 1.34–1.47 g/100 g of polyphenols among which include catechin, epicatechin, ferulic acid methyl ester, procyanidin B1, etc.; ca 21.65 mg/100 g of carotenoids including zeaxanthin, β-cryptoxanthin, all-trans-β-carotene, and various organic acids such as malic, citric, and succinic, which result in a high antioxidant activity of 5.8 mmol TE/100 g. Results also showed that antioxidant activity exhibited high stability when the extract was subjected to various thermal treatments, pHs, and ionic strengths, while color was mainly impacted negatively when a temperature of 100 °C was employed. This data confirms the technological potential of this traditional, yet often overlooked species.
