Abstract: The Perception of Islamic Preachers about Gender Bias Reviewed From Ethnic Group Backgrounds. The existence of various studies and literature on gender does not automatically change the society's opinion about gender equality. As such, supporters and opponents of the idea are readily found. One opinion goes as far as saying that gender studies try to alter the teachings of religion itself. In the gender studies has been found that many contributed to the emergence and development of gender biased ideology in Muslim societies, especially in Indonesia. Among those responsible to discriminatory preservation of women are religious leaders who are represented by ustaz and ustazah where they play the role of religious teachings to the Muslim community. This article examines the opinions of ustaz and ustazah on gender inequality realized from the background of each ethnic group, so it will be revealed about whether there is a link between ethnic background of an ustaz and ustazah to their perception of gender injustice. Based on field studies, where the research data was obtained from questionnaires and interviews, this study found that there is an understanding of gender bias in ustaz and ustazah perceptions in Medan city. This study is expected to contribute to gender studies in Indonesia.

Keywords: ustaz, ustazah, injustice, gender, ethnic group

One of the common social problems in Nigerian society nowadays is the increasing of violence against women and children, mostly by male members of a family. Unfortunately, the problem has assumed a new dimension in recent times as husbands become victims of their wives leading violence against them. Throughout the history of human existence on earth. The Qur’ān identifies nushūz as a factor that leads to family crises in marriage contracts and steps have been recommended for peaceful resolution of such disputes in the Qur’ān. However, in spite of this provision, violence against family members is on increase among Muslim families in Nigeria. Some of the questions that many will ask are whether Muslim couples are aware of the Qur’anic guidance in resolving family crises or not? To what extent do the Muslims follow the Islamic teachings in matters related to family life before, during and after disputes? How can such increasing violence be controlled following the teachings of the Qur’ān and Sunnah of the Prophet SAW? What shall be the role of Muslim women in promoting peaceful life within the family? The paper is an attempt to answer the above questions and recommend the best ways to improve family life among Muslims. This will be through analytical studies of relevant texts of the Qur’ān and Sunnah and the current realities in Nigerian Muslim families with a particular reference to Gombe metropolitan city of Gombe State, Nigeria. The paper recommends that Islamic values should be emphasized and upheld at all levels of family life by all and sundry.

The role of Pusat Pelayanan Terpadu Pemberdayaan Perempuan dan Anak (P2TP2A)—translated in English: the Integrated Service Center for the Empowerment of Women and Children— in the context of development is very important in order to oversee the government's steps in minimizing and handling cases of violence against women and children which are getting higher intensity from year to year, especially in educational institutions in the form of peer violence and violence by teacher. This study seeks to describe the collaboration of P2TP2A and the Education Office of Depok City in preventing violence against children in educational institutions. Observation and documentation studies are used as data collection techniques and qualitative descriptive analysis. This study produces findings including: 1) collaboration of P2TP2A and the Education Agency in the prevention of violence against children in the educational environment carried out in the form of socialization “Stop violence on children” and the establishment of children's Forums; 2) involvement of P2TP2A in the recruitment of teachers and principals. The form of collaboration still needs to be improved, especially in the preparation of hidden curriculum programs for handling violence, budgeting violence prevention activities for children in the school environment, and strengthening the authority of prevention until the handling of violence against women and children. This collaboration is at least a starting point that Depok becomes one of the regions that is highly committed in realizing Child Friendly Cities so that children's rights in the context of education can be fulfilled and the number of violence against children can be minimized.

Public helping reactions are essential to reduce a victim’s secondary victimization in intimate partner violence against women (IPVAW) cases. Because gender-related characteristics have been linked widely to IPVAW prevalence, the study aimed to examine individual attitudes and perceptions toward different forms of violence against women, as well as gender-related macrosocial ideological and structural factors, in explaining helping reactions to IPVAW across 28 European countries. We performed multilevel logistic regression analysis, taking measures from the Eurobarometer 2016 (N = 7115) and the European Institute for Gender Equality datasets. Our study revealed a greater individual perceived IPVAW prevalence, positive perception about the appropriateness of a legal response to psychological and sexual violence against women partners, and less VAW-supportive attitudes predicted helping reactions (i.e., formal, informal), but not negative reactions to IPVAW. Moreover, individuals from European countries with a greater perceived IPVAW prevalence and gender equality preferred formal reactions to IPVAW. Otherwise, in the European countries with lesser perceived IPVAW prevalence and negative perceptions about the appropriate legal response to psychological and sexual violence, people were more likely to provide informal reactions to IPVAW. Our results showed the role of gender-related characteristics influenced real reactions toward known victim of IPVAW.

COVID-19 has imposed mandatory lockdowns in many countries including India. However, since the lockdown has been imposed, attention is being focused on its economic repercussions and on providing food and shelter to poor and migrants. But the pandemic has exposed vulnerabilities and created challenges at other fronts too. More specifically, women’s lack of autonomy in the patriarchal homes is further getting reduces when today, `homes’ which are no longer merely seen as comfort zones, but during the lockdown, homes are evolving as spaces where people are working from home and earning their livelihoods, children are attending classes and other activities are being coordinated. Violence in such homes against women and children is rising during the lockdown. Women and children trapped within homes with the perpetrators of violence are facing severe abuse. In order to combat the situation and to make homes as safe zones, special measures are required. The government needs to declare domestic violence as `essential services’ and must take steps to provide immediate relief to women and children. In the long term, the need is to address entrenched structural discrimination in order to ensure gender equality within homes. Lockdowns may be interpreted in different ways. One is to lockdown our collective imaginations and allow the pre-existing stereotypical gender notions to continue and reiterate, or it could be, to isolate the world from the patriarchal notions and to reimagine a violence free gender just world.
