This research attempted to investigate whether teaching strategies significantly affect the students’ motivation in writing and the problems which students face during the implementation the strategies. The strategies were RAFT (Role, Audience, Format, and Topic) and Climbing and Diving. This research deals with the experimental research design. The population of this study was the students of the first year of Intensive language learning programme IAIN Padangsidimpuan. The instruments used were questionnaire and interview. The questionnaire sheet was designed with Likert scale. Through t-test calculation it was found RAFT strategy significantly affect the students’ motivation in writing. It also found that Climbing and Diving strategy significantly affect the students’ motivation in writing. The problems which students face during the implementation of RAFT and Climbing and Diving strategies in writing expository are: a. RAFT does not provide enough; b. RAFT strategy only helps students to pass choosing topic and drafting which are parts of pre-writing; c. Climbing and Diving strategy does not always give students enough time to write the drafts because of the limited time; d. Students may lose control in writing because the is no certain pattern of this strategy.

This research aimed to find the effect of teaching strategy on the students’ motivation in writing and the students’ problems during the strategy implementation. Climbing and Diving was the strategy that was applied in this research. The design of the research is experimental. The first year students were taken as the population of the research. They are the Intensive language learning programme students in IAIN Padangsidimpuan. Questionnaire and interview were used to get the data. Likert scale was used in the questionnaire to score the students’ responses. From the calculation using t-test, the t value = 0.756 is the t table α = 0.05. It means that the students’ motivation in writing is significantly affected by Climbing and Diving strategy. During the implementation of the strategy, the students faced two dominant problems. They are time limitation and no specific pattern. The short time offered by this strategy does not give the students more chances to write and because of no pattern makes students lose control in writing.

The aim of this study is to discover the effect of applying SQ3R method inreading comprehension. Experimental research design is used as the research method. This research took place at SMA Nasrani 2Medan. There were 2 classes chosen as thesample with 30 students in each class. The classes were divided into two groups namelyexperimental and control group. The experimental group was taught by using SQ3Rmethod and the control group was taught by using conventional method. The instrumentused to collect the data was a set of multiple choice tests, which divided as pre test andpost test. The result of the research was analyzed by using t-test formula. The resultshowed that t-test was higher than t-table (4,23>2,00) at the level of significant 0,05with degree of freedom (df) 58. It means that hypothesis alternative (Ha) is acceptedwhich shows that SQ3R method significantly improves the student’s readingcomprehension.
