The European Pharmacopoeia, Supplement 9.4, one of the newest published pharmacopoeial documents, besides new saponin-bearing raw materials (Bupleuri radix and Platycodi radix) characterized in part 1 and 2 of the series of articles, lists also other new plant raw materials, long known in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) but earlier unknown in official European medicine. Part 3 of the series of articles presents botanical, ecological and chemical characterization of Ligusticum chuanxiong – Sechuan lovage. Rhizome of this species – Ligustici chuanxiong rhizoma is an essential oil-bearing raw material that has long been used in TCM to treat most of all different gynecological ailments and pain of different etiologies. Professional scientific studies documented a wide range of its possible therapeutic applications, e.g. improvement of the cardiovascular system function, and its antioxidant and anticancer properties. A review of pharmacological studies of this raw material was subject to most attention in the article. The aim of the article is to present basic knowledge on Sechuan lovage, which appears indispensable in professional contacts of pharmacists, medical doctors and phytotherapists with patients.

To expand the raw material base of medicinal plant raw materials, a promising area of research is the study of additional types of raw materials that can be harvested from already used medicinal and food plants. Given the complexity of harvesting alder seeds, researchers are interested in the leaves of this plant, a wide range of biologically active substances that cause anti-inflammatory, astringent and antioxidant effects. The first stage of standardization of raw materials is the definition of morphologically significant features, based on the generalization of which the section "External features" is developed. The analysis of morphological features of freshly harvested, dried and frozen leaves of gray alder (Alnus incana Moench) and black alder (A. glutinosa Gaerth) harvested from wild plants in mixed forests of the Moscow region revealed diagnostically significant features and found that the method of conservation does not affect the occurrence of the identified features. Since it is planned to use both types of alder for the preparation of a new type of raw material "Alder leaves", a generalized formulation is proposed for raw materials that are a mixture of species.

One of the last supplements to the European Pharmacopoeia (Supl. 9.4) introduces several new herbal medicinal raw materials, so far unknown and not used in official Central European phytotherapy. The article describes plant species from Bupleurum genus providing new saponin raw material. The botanical and ecological characteristics as well as the current state of research on the chemistry of pharmacopoeial species from that genus were presented. The confirmed by scientific researches therapeutic applications of plant raw material – Bupleuri radix, were described particularly. Attention was paid to the position of that raw material in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). It was emphasized that for about 20 years, it has had the World Health Organization (WHO) monograph. In addition, the importance of this plant in the food industry and its increasing status in the cosmetic industry were pointed. The aim of the article is the popularization of basic knowledge about pharmacopoeial species from Bupleurum genus in the Polish pharmaceutical, medical and phytotherapeutical environment.

The buds of horse chestnut (Aesculus hippocastanum L., Hippocastanaceae family) is a new promising species of medicinal plant raw material. The prospect of studying the buds of this plant is due to the content of flavonoids in them, which have a wide range of pharmacological effects. Flavonoids are interesting for their capillary-strengthening action, which allows them to be used in the treatment of chronic venous insufficiency. This fact is consistent with the practice of using drugs from other organs of horse chestnut (seeds, leaves) as venotonic and angioprotective drugs. In addition, flavonoids are also characterized by antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial and antifungal activity. The actuality of the study of horse chestnut buds as a new type of medicinal plant material is also supported by the need to develop of the new effective and safe drugs based on the raw materials of this plant. The aim of this study was to determine the flavonoid composition of the buds of Aesulus hippocastanum. In the course of the work from the buds of horse chestnut by the method of column chromatography on silica gel L 100/160 was for the first time there were isolated and characterized using 1H-NMR, 13C-NMR, UV spectroscopy and mass spectrometry the flavonoid compounds rhamnocitrin (7-O-methylkaempferol), and accompanying 7,4′-dimethylkaempferol. The dominant and diagnostic significant flavonoid for the horse chestnut buds is rhamnocitrin. The results indicate the prospects for further study of the buds of the horse chestnut as a new type of medicinal plant raw materials.

Carotenoids are of interest as precursors of vitamin A, which has a wide range of pharmacological effects — antioxidant, immunomodulatory, participating in photoreception, etc. The aim of the research was to develop a technique for the spectrophotometric determination of the A-vitamin activity of carotenoids-rich medicinal plant raw materials (MPRM). The objects of research were the traditional sources of carotenoids — sea buckthorn, carrot, pumpkin and wild rose. A method is proposed for determining the content of individual carotenoids in MPRM by optical density at wavelengths corresponding to the characteristic peaks of α-carotene, β-carotene and lycopene. It has been shown that it is preferable to use isopropyl alcohol as the most effective solvent. Taking into account the content of specific carotenoids makes it possible to determine the A-vitamin activity of the sum of carotenoids extracted from plant materials, and, accordingly, to increase the efficiency of the use of herbal preparations and biologically active additives for health improvement.

The European Pharmacopoeia Supplement 9.4 introduces several new plant-derived raw materials long known in East-Asian medicine but previously not used in official European medicine. A series of articles in Part 1 and 2 presents species providing new saponin raw materials: Bupleuri radix and Platycodi radix. In part 3, the species which is a source of a new essential oil raw material, namely Ligusticum chuanxiong is characterized. Part 4 is dedicated to outlining the basic botanical-ecological-chemical characteristic of Houttuynia cordata (chameleon plant). The raw material sourced from this species – Houttuyniae herba, has long been known and used not only in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) but also in traditional Japanese, Thai and Nepalese medicine. Most attention was devoted to reviewing the professional pharmacological studies of extracts of this raw material. This review documents very important lines of action of the raw material, namely its antioxidant, anticancer and anti-inflammatory properties. In addition, the article highlights the significance of this species as a food product in some Asian countries and as a source of cosmetic raw materials. The aim of the article is to popularize basic knowledge on this new pharmacopoeial species among pharmacists and medical doctors.

The European Pharmacopoeia Supplement 9.4, one of the newest pharmacopoeial documents, contains monographs of new raw materials long known in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) but earlier unknown in official European medicine. Part 1 and 2 comprise characterization of two new saponin raw materials: Bupleuri radix (root of Bupleurum chinense and Bupleurum scorzonerifolium) and Platycodi radix (root of Platycodon grandiflorus ? balloon flower). Part 3 presents therapeutic values of a new essential oil raw material ? Ligustici chuanxiong rhizoma (rhizome of Ligustici chuanxiong), while part 4 portrays a new flavonoid raw material Houttuynia cordata herba (herb of Houttuynia cordata). Part 5 presents botanical-chemical-pharmacological characterization of tree peony (Paeonia × suffruticosa). It was highlighted how important role this plant plays in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). Numerous possible applications of the raw material ? Moutan cortex (root bark) were depicted based on modern professional pharmacological studies documenting its very valuable medicinal values including antioxidant, anticancer, cardioprotective and neuroprotective activities. Moreover, the significance of this plant (its different organs) in the production of cosmetics was underlined. Also other species of Paeonia sp. known in TCM and in recent years incorporated in official European medicine are underscored. The aim of the paper was to introduce Polish pharmacists and medical doctors to the basic knowledge of Paeonia x suffruticosa.

  The article is devoted to the study of the chemical composition, physical and thermal-pfysical characteristics of damp apple pomaces and the identifying patterns of influence of drying temperature the functional composition and gel-forming ability of pectin. The research is aimed at obtaining initial data for the subsequent calculation of the main technological, hydro-mechanical, thermal, structural and economic characteristics of devices for drying the plant raw materials, ensuring the environmental safety and high quality of pectin-containing raw materials, the reducing heat and energy costs. As a result of the study of the thermal characteristics of apple pomaces, the critical points (temperature conductivity – 16.5 x 10-8 m2/s, thermal conductivity – 0.28 W/m K, heat capacity – 1627 j/(kg K)) at a humidity of 56 % are determined, which characterizing the transition from the extraction of weakly bound moisture to the extraction of moisture with strong bonds (colloidal, adsorption). It was found that the pomaces obtained from apples of late ripening have a higher content of solids (21-23 %), soluble pectin and protopectin (2.5-4.5 %). Dried pomaces obtained from apple varieties of late ripening contain up to 25 % pectin, which allow us to recommend them as a source of raw materials for the production of pectin. The optimum modes of preliminary washing of raw materials are offered, allowing to the remove the ballast substances as much as possible. It is established that when the drying temperature increases, the destructive processes are catalyzed: the strength of the pectin jelly and the uronide component and the degree of pectin esterification are reduced. The optimum drying temperature of damp apple pomaces is 80 0C, at which the quality of pectin extracted from the dried raw materials is maintained as much as possible. It is shown that the most effective for the pectin production is a fraction with a particle size of 3-5 mm, which allow us to extract up to 71 % of pectin from raw materials.

Phenol–formaldehyde (PF) resin continues to dominate the resin industry more than 100 years after its first synthesis. Its versatile properties such as thermal stability, chemical resistance, fire resistance, and dimensional stability make it a suitable material for a wide range of applications. PF resins have been used in the wood industry as adhesives, in paints and coatings, and in the aerospace, construction, and building industries as composites and foams. Currently, petroleum is the key source of raw materials used in manufacturing PF resin. However, increasing environmental pollution and fossil fuel depletion have driven industries to seek sustainable alternatives to petroleum based raw materials. Over the past decade, researchers have replaced phenol and formaldehyde with sustainable materials such as lignin, tannin, cardanol, hydroxymethylfurfural, and glyoxal to produce bio-based PF resin. Several synthesis modifications are currently under investigation towards improving the properties of bio-based phenolic resin. This review discusses recent developments in the synthesis of PF resins, particularly those created from sustainable raw material substitutes, and modifications applied to the synthetic route in order to improve the mechanical properties.

Sherry wine vinegar is a Spanish gourmet product under Protected Designation of Origin (PDO). Before a vinegar can be labeled as Sherry vinegar, the product must meet certain requirements as established by its PDO, which, in this case, means that it has been produced following the traditional solera and criadera ageing system. The quality of the vinegar is determined by many factors such as the raw material, the acetification process or the aging system. For this reason, mainly producers, but also consumers, would benefit from the employment of effective analytical tools that allow precisely determining the origin and quality of vinegar. In the present study, a total of 48 Sherry vinegar samples manufactured from three different starting wines (Palomino Fino, Moscatel, and Pedro Ximénez wine) were analyzed by Fourier-transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy. The spectroscopic data were combined with unsupervised exploratory techniques such as hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA) and principal component analysis (PCA), as well as other nonparametric supervised techniques, namely, support vector machine (SVM) and random forest (RF), for the characterization of the samples. The HCA and PCA results present a clear grouping trend of the vinegar samples according to their raw materials. SVM in combination with leave-one-out cross-validation (LOOCV) successfully classified 100% of the samples, according to the type of wine used for their production. The RF method allowed selecting the most important variables to develop the characteristic fingerprint (“spectralprint”) of the vinegar samples according to their starting wine. Furthermore, the RF model reached 100% accuracy for both LOOCV and out-of-bag (OOB) sets.

As public attention on sustainability is increasing, the use of polysaccharides as rheological modifiers in skin-care products is becoming the first choice. Polysaccharide associations can be used to increase the spreading properties of products and to optimize their sensorial profile. Since the choice of natural raw materials for cosmetics is wide, instrumental methodologies are useful for formulators to easily characterize the materials and to create mixtures with specific applicative properties. In this work, we performed rheological and texture analyses on samples formulated with binary and ternary associations of polysaccharides to investigate their structural and mechanical features as a function of the concentration ratios. The rheological measurements were conducted under continuous and oscillatory flow conditions using a rotational rheometer. An immersion/de-immersion test conducted with a texture analyzer allowed us to measure some textural parameters. Sclerotium gum and iota-carrageenan imparted high viscosity, elasticity, and firmness in the system; carob gum and pectin influenced the viscoelastic properties and determined high adhesiveness and cohesiveness. The results indicated that these natural polymers combined in appropriate ratios can provide a wide range of different textures and that the use of these two complementary techniques represents a valid pre-screening tool for the formulation of green products.
