Equality of men is a great issue to maintain every country all the time. Indonesia is one of them which should struggle to maintain it so far. Fictional work is one of the aesthetical means to support it. The way of struggle can be memorized through the time of independence era in fictional works of Balai Poestaka publisher. Javanese language novels, Ngulandara and Kirti NdjoendjoengDradjat are two literary works published by BalaiPoestaka that were written in the dominance times of Balai Poestaka activities as commission for people’s reading in Dutch colonial era in Indonesia (Dutch Indies). Kepriyayian (nobility) was the theme of Ngulandara (1936) and Kirti NdjoendjoengDradjat(1924) novels. As seen from propaganda point of view, ideologically the portrayal of priyayi (nobleman) was analogy symbol of Dutch colonial government that ruled social system. Ngulandara and Kirti Njunjung Drajat showed a “struggle” through literary works as portrayed in wong cilik (Javanese: lower class people) who struggled against the existence of the authorities. The struggle emerged in the way of wong cilik behaved intellectually, morally, even mannerly better than the nobles (priyayi). This research used the theory of literature and propaganda using a sociological approach. Those oppositional relationships between deconstruction nobles and the raise of wong cilik in the field of intellectual, moral, and manner show the propaganda of equality of men through the voice of Jasawidagdo and Margana Djajaatmadja.

Fatherland, counterrevolution, romanticism. Xavier de Maistre and his lost Savoy The literary works of Xavier de Maistre, savoyard writer and painter of the turn of 18th and 19th centuries, are strictly connected to the era in which the author has lived, particularly in the way of considering concepts of fatherland and nature, landscape. A trauma, related to the invasion of French revolutionary forces in Savoy pushed de Maistre into the counterrevolutionary camp and stimulated narrative reflections upon the themes of homeland, nature, and political change. His works, such as Voyage autour de ma chambre and Expédition nocturne autour de ma chambre, written between 1794 and 1825, show a particular evolution of the author’s point of view, starting from a classical, objectifying approach, inherited form the Enlightenment, to transform finally towards a subjective, individual scope, specific to the romanticism. To discover the motors and instru ments of this evolution of the author’s mind is the object of this paper.

Modern Balinese literature is one of the fields of classification in the world of Balinese literature. Balinese literary works that were born in the modern era or after the inclusion of foreign cultural influences in Balinese literary works are called modern Balinese literature. At the beginning of its emergence in the pre-independence era, modern Balinese literature was conceived by teacher teachers who served in formal schools established by the Dutch colonial. The early works of these teachers became a milestone in the birth of modern Balinese literature. Narrative texts written by I Made Pasek and Mas Niti Sastro became the initial embryos of Balinese short stories. In the form of some narrative texts they have presented a very modern form, no longer similar to the form of narrative doengeng or folklore. Then in content, the value content offered by the author is a very modern value content, not merely the values ??of tradition.

The Javanese people began to recognise the variety of western literature after printing media was introduced by the Dutch colonial government. Since then, a lot of Javanese literary works written by Javanese authors have been published through mass media. It was a different condition for literature to develop compared to the preceding traditional handwriting period. In Javanese literature today, works of prose are varied into several forms, such as fairy tales, novels and even stories that are widely known in mass media, among them are Panjebar Semangat, and Jaka Lodhang. In the mass media the form becomes short stories (carita cekak, jagating lelembut, wacan boy, carios pedhalangan). Each of these forms has its own fans. The purpose of this research is to trace the concept or principle of patience, harmony and respect in Javanese culture applied by an author in a story. This research explores the story of Lamtara-Lamtara Pinggir Desa. The story is written by Sri Setya Rahayu, a story writer who often writes stories in Javanese. Sri Setya Rahayu is an active writer as her short stories, such as Panjebar Semangat, Jayabaya, Kumangdhang, Djaka Lodang, and others, are often published in magazines or tabloids.

This article discusses integration between indigenous, especially Sundanese people and group of Chinese ethnic in Garut City, West Java since the Dutch colonial era until the post independence of the Republic of Indonesia (RI) 1945. Method used in this research is  historical method consisting of four steps, namely heuristics, criticism, interpretation, and historiography. To assist the explanation of the assimilation, the author uses social sciences, especially sociology, anthropology, psychology, and political science. The conclusion of this research  appears to be two factors causing the difficulty of asimilation between Sundanese people and ethnic Chinese group. The first factor, the historical roots in which the Dutch Colonial Government classified Chinese ethnic group into higher position of legal and social than Sundanese people. The second factor, a strong sense of Chinese Culturalism that is still embedded in Chinese ethnic groups, namely a sense that always glorifies the culture of its ancestors. As a result, that a sense leads them to the attitude of always being oriented to the ancient culture of their ancestors. Both factors led to the existence of Chinese ethnic communities in Garut City, increasing prominently, both before and after Indonesian independence.

Over the past few years, I have developed a form of composition – which I callmusic–text–film –in which I explore the dynamics between sound, words and visuals. In this article I will attempt to explain how meaning is constructed in the interplay between these layers of media. Taking as an example three of my works,Subliminal: The Lucretian Picnic,Dreams of the BlindandThe Arrest, I analyse and discuss aspects of narrative, point of view, metaphor and cross-modal perception, as a way of understanding how multimedia art, specifically in the audiovisual domain, is experienced. One of the issues that arose out of these pieces was the question of location of the ‘voice’. It is as if a state of limbo is created between the narrative voice of the text and the implied voice of the music, due to the absence of a conventional focal point to pin it on – an actor or a singer. I would like to suggest that because of this vacancy and the way the projected word takes the place of the sung or spoken voice, the inner voice of the audience becomes activated. This then becomes a vital immersive dimension in the performance, as the inner voice of the audience finds its place within the space of the composition.

Since the colonial era, there have been attempts to provide clinical childbirth services by establishing midwifery schools. Although these schools were closed, reorganized then re-opened several times, in an effort to graduate native midwives in the colony. The majority of the European doctors believed the existence of native midwives could reduce mortality rates for difficult deliveries. The colonial government also tried to replace dukun beranak (local midwives) with graduate midwives, as many doctors considered dukun beranak practices unsafe and unhygienic. Of note, even though midwifery school graduates provided childbirth services, most of the population preferred to use dukun beranak. This situation continued until independence. Dukun beranak remained the preferred provider of assistance among the working and lower class. The continued popularity of the dukun beranak can be seen as a colonial failure to replace them. After the proclamation of Indonesian independence, midwives who supported the Indonesian Republic, still provided childbearing assistance although with limited infrastructure and inadequate personnel during the independence war. Midwives also founded a midwifes association, rebuilt the national midwifery system, and discontinued colonial elements. This transformation can be interpreted as the decolonisation of midwifery. Midwives and dukun beranak were the available options for assisting in the labour of an Indonesian woman. The Indonesian government had a different approach to the colonial government toward society and dukun beranak and built cooperation between midwives and the dukun beranak. The cooperative work among midwives and dukun beranak changed awareness of Indonesian women’s reproductive health matters. This article traces efforts to provide safer childbirth services by looking at the problem through the lens of midwives and dukun beranak relations. The evolution of this relationship shows the decolonisation process inside midwifery and childbearing services.
