scholarly journals Distance training of geography teachers in the context of educational reform

In the system of continuous geographical education, upgrading teachers’ professional skills plays an important role. Acquaintance with modern tendencies of educational technology and constant normative-legislative and methodical changes form a permanent basis for training and self-improvement of teachers. Since 2016 V.N. Karazin Kharkiv National University, in addition to specialists training, has been offering teachers’ qualifications improvement in the form of part-time classes, at the courses for teachers of general educational establishments of different types and forms of ownership in Kharkiv region in the study field «Geography. Geography of Ukraine». The purpose of the article is to analyze the organization of distance learning of geography teachers within the framework of teacher training courses. The main material. The program of training courses for geography teachers involves consideration of educational problems, features of teaching geography on various programs and courses, specialized training, courses for gifted children. High efficiency of the training is assured by the implementation of both invariant and variant components. The thematic plan is designed for 210 hours (7 credits). According to the curriculum, distance learning relates to the professional unit. During the on-site classes, teachers obtain basic knowledge, which is furthered with the distance course «Geography for Teachers», designed for 120 academic hours. The course «Geography for Teachers» is based on the Moodle platform designed to support distance learning. It contains such structural elements as glossary, tasks, resources, tests, a forum, a chat and consists of 12 information packs. Digital online classes take place within 4 weeks, which includes independent online study. This stage for teachers finishes with preparing and presenting the paper (implementation of the practical task) and taking the test. During this period, course participants can get a personal tutorial in the chat or the forum. It is important to maintain feedback from teachers because they work during the learning process due to the lack of time. Each of them has the opportunity to work with the distance course and get a tutorial in their free time. The distance course «Geography for Teachers» has been repeatedly tested by groups of teachers who were upgrading their qualification and has been improved with every comment or suggestion. The course has got the certificate of recognition as an educational and methodical work. Conclusions. To sum up, the usage of the distance course «Geography for Teachers» as a form of continuous geographical education certainly has a number of benefits: mobility, modernity of information, accessibility and informality. This improves the perception and work of geography teachers in self-education and upgrading their professional competencies. It also provides the opportunity to use new, up-to-date information in the form of lectures, presentations, manuals, statistical yearbooks and other information resources that are necessary for a teacher in his or her work.

Gifted students are important for the development of knowledgeable societies. The present study examined Mexican elementary-school teachers’ knowledge about gifted students, specifically on screening criteria, educational strategies, and their social value. The relationships between teachers’ knowledge, teaching experience, and training in gifted education was analysed. A total of 1002 teachers (M age = 37.5, SD = 9.6 years old) from the 33 states of Mexico, 365 men and 510 females with 13.5 years of teaching experience, of whom 32% were trained in gifted education, completed an anonymous questionnaire. K-means cluster analysis revealed two clusters. Cluster 1 comprised teachers (61.2%) with poor knowledge, while Cluster 2 included teachers (38.8%) with basic knowledge and more teaching experience and training. Overall, the findings had implications for teachers’ training and educational policy.

The study aimed to identify the degree of benefit and difficulty in using e-learning system (Moodle) in university learning Under the pandemic of Covid 19 among PES at West Bank universities- Palestine, in addition to determining the differences according to variables of gender, study level & university. The researchers used descriptive& analytic approach. The study was conducted on a random sample of (103) studentsWhich represents a percentage of (17.13) from PTUK &An-Najah National University. In order to collect data, the researchers prepared two scales are They are (degree of benefit, degree of difficulty) from students' use of the educational Moodle system. The results of the study revealed the following: - The degree of benefit from using e-learning system (Moodle) in university learningUnder the pandemic of Covid 19 among study sample were low. - The degree of difficulty from using e-learning system (Moodle) in university learningUnder the pandemic of Covid 19 among study sample were middle. - There weren't statistically significant differences in benefit & difficulty from using e-learning system (Moodle) in university learning Under the pandemic of Covid 19 among study sample according to variables of gender, study level & university.The researchers recommend the need toHold training courses on the use of the various e-learning systems in Palestinian universities for students and academic staff.

The paper discusses the results of distance learning for students of the Pacific National University Pedagogical Institute, Department of Biology, Ecology, Chemistry. The positive and negative sides of the «distance» are revealed. Specific examples show that distance learning in the preparation of future teachers of chemistry and biology can be just one of the issues of the disciplines «Theory and methodology of teaching biology» and «Theory and methodology of teaching chemistry» as an innovative technology of teaching methods. Distance learning should not completely replace the traditional one.

The last decade has been marked by large-scale and rapid changes in education, taking place on the basis of modern infocommunication and digital technologies, new hardware and software, as well as teaching methods updated in accordance with this. The limited mobility of citizens due to the coronavirus pandemic further intensified these processes, when, even with a low readiness of educational institutions to switch to distance (electronic, remote) technologies, teachers and students had to quickly master these technologies and use them in practice. The resulting experience allows us to identify not only problematic, sometimes even negative, features of distance learning, but also to make sure of the undoubted advantages of these technologies. The article points out the need for a systematic analysis when deciding on the use of e-learning, taking into account both technical and methodological, as well as personnel readiness for the implementation of this technology.The article analyzes these problems using the example of teaching both technical and humanitarian disciplines. The experience of distance work is analyzed on the example of cooperation between the Moscow Technical University of Communications and Informatics (Russia) and the L. N. Gumilyov Eurasian National University (Kazakhstan), which in its practical activities purposefully invites foreign professors to deliver lectures, guide undergraduates, etc., including those based on distance technology. The data of an anonymous questionnaire survey of students of these universities are given, allowing to assess the effectiveness of the decisions made, as well as to clarify the existing problems.

Scrub typhus, a disease caused by Orientia tsutsugamushi, affects more than one billion people globally with an average fatality rate of 6%. Humans are accidentally infected through the bite of trombiculid mite larvae (chiggers). Chiggers feed on hosts’ extracellular fluid for survival and development. O. tsutsugamushi is maintained throughout the chigger’s lifespan and over several generations. Although disease-related knowledge is essential in designing effective control strategies, many personnel in related sectors are unfamiliar with this disease and its vector. To tackle this issue, we developed a distance learning tool using educational videos on scrub typhus- and vector-related topics. The learning method is facilitated online, and students and tutors are not required to be physically present at the same place and time, thus allowing flexibility and accessibility. Knowledge improvement of 34 participants from related sectors was evaluated by pre- and post-test questionnaires. Although 54% of participants had prior knowledge of scrub typhus, 76.5% still lack basic knowledge of vector identification. After the distance learning, the average score increased significantly from the baseline (p < 0.05). Most participants showed interest in the topic and learning method. These results suggest that the distance learning method was promising in distributing health-related information and might be applied to other diseases and communities.

Teacher recommendation as a means of identifying gifted children traditionally has been regarded as ineffective and inefficient, although such conclusions are based upon studies in which teachers were required to make global assessments of students' ability. The present study sought to re-examine the issue through the use of checklists on which the teachers were asked to indicate the presence or absence of certain behaviors. Significant, moderate, positive correlations between teacher rating and IQ were obtained, and the ratings were found to possess both high efficiency and stability. Teacher rating was found to be a better predictor of giftedness for girls than for boys. With IQ as the dependent variable, a main effect for achievement was found, but there was none for rating nor was there an interaction effect. Teacher rating was a better identifier of gifted underachievers than of gifted achievers.

The learning process at any stage involves direct interaction between the lecturer and students. The article discusses the lecturer-student relationship as one of the factors that influences the teaching process and improvement of learning materials on the example of the study course “Computer Science”. The study aims at using the results of the survey, as well as student tests as a feedback method to improve the quality of the presentation of new material to first-year students considering the basic knowledge of obtained secondary education. The article discusses two methods of feedback: survey and testing. Survey is considered a method with high efficiency of obtaining information, a possibility of organising mass surveys, an ability to accurately process student survey results. Testing is viewed as a method to identify the level of knowledge and skills, as well as the abilities and other qualities of the educator to meet certain standards by analysing the ways, in which a student performs a number of special tasks. Both methods perfectly complement each other and provide an opportunity to more objectively analyse the learning situation. The article presents the results of the study on the example of the study course “Computer Science” for three academic years, describes changes in the structure of the course, as well as changes in the conduction of practical classes within the course, which improved student performance.

AbstractThe paper focuses on the analysis of the employees’ behaviour, specifically in their involvement and commitment in hotel service after the implementation of a quality management system. When organization fails to involve the employees in a meaningful way, two types of workers could be identified; employees with high efficiency and employees with resistance to change. In this qualitative study, it was observed that if an employee doesn’t feel a sense of accomplishment, even when he constantly receives training courses, has incentives or sanctions, it is going to be difficult to get his involvement and commitment with the organization goals. This situation happens because the hotel quality management system is supported by an isomorphism with standardized rules that proceeded or originate from a different context and, in that system the features of the company and workers were not considered. The case study war carried out in a touristic destiny of sun-beach tourism in Mexico. Questionnaires and semi-structured interviews were prepared to elicit the employees’ participation in decision-making process, the employees’ involvement and commitment to achieve organization’s quality objectives, the employees’ efficiency in production processes and service, and the socialization. As already stated earlier, the intention of this paper is to develop an understanding of the actual practices that guide the relationships of human resources, when quality is joined as a contingent element.
