The paper focuses on the specifics of reproducing nonce units coined by the author of the original literary work into Ukrainian. Nonce formations are topical and promising object of translation studies due to the whole range of reasons. First, a variety of their representations is of great interest in terms of their interpreting. In most cases, interpretation of nonce units is complicated as their morphemic structure is vague. Second, nonce units belong to the words with no direct equivalents in other languages, which greatly complicates the ways of their reproducing in the target language. Thus, dealing with each particular nonce formation in the source language, the translator has to apply non-standard approaches to selecting/coining its equivalent in the target language. So, the great contribution of the translator, his/her importance compared to that of the author of the literary work is proven. Ulysses abounds with nonce formations, making the whole piece of writing extremely challenging for translators. We classify Joyce’s nonce formations by their word-building patterns into two groups: phonographic (coined by means of combining phonemes) and morphological (coined by means of random combining morphemes or their segments). This makes it possible to conclude that the morphological structure of nonce units impacts both interpreting and coining their equivalents. However, the universal approach or strategy to their reproducing in the target language does not exist. In every case the translator should take into account the whole range of factors including but not limited to rendering pragmatic intentions of the author of the original literary work and uniqueness of his/her individual style. While reproducing nonce words of the novel Ulysses into Ukrainian, in most cases translators applied calque (loan translation) and compensation rather than transcoding. Their choice of the domestication strategy can be explained by their attempts to make one of the most difficult novels more accessible to Ukrainian readers.

This article examines strategies applied in selected passages of Elena Petrova’s Russian translation of Olga Grushin’s anglophone novel The Dream Life of Sukhanov (2005). The novel is set in Moscow during the late Soviet period and depicts a crisis precipitated by the changes brought by glasnost in the life of a loyal apparatchik. Although the Russian-American writer Grushin composed the novel in her adopted language of English, it reflects a Russian cultural subtext and contains numerous Russian linguistic elements and cultural allusions. It is therefore interesting to analyze how these elements are rendered in the Russian translation, entitled Zhizn’ Sukhanova v snovideniiakh (2011). The analysis is followed by a consideration of challenges posed by translingual texts to theoretical understandings of translation. It argues that established concepts within translation studies, such as domestication, foreignization, source language and target language, are not well-suited to cases of literary translingualism.

Translation of literary work is never simply the business of translating the work in the source language into the target language. Translation is always culture-sensitive, as it also means translating the source culture into the target culture. This study examines two translations of the novel The Old Man and The Sea (1952) by Ernest Hemingway in the Indonesian language. Both are titled Lelaki Tua dan Laut. The earlier  was published in 1973 and was translated by Sapardi Djoko Damono, while the latter was translated by Dian Vita Ellyati and was published in 2010. These two translated versions are compared with each other in order to identify differences in perception and diction. Differences in diction further influence the reader’s perception. Close examination of the two versions discovers contrasting perception and diction. The study finds that Djoko Damono’s translation builds meaning by using Indonesian equivalents to represent the concepts presented in the novel, while Ellyati’s builds meaning through description and explanation of said concepts. Djoko Damono’s translation attempts to maintain poetic expressions through the use of rhyming words; Ellyati’s translation goes for clarity of meaning. Djoko Damono’s translation uses extensive vocabulary with specific meanings, while Ellyati’s chooses to employ words with more generic meanings. These differences indicate that translation work is never final; it is an ongoing, ever changing process.

Purpose of the study: Not all languages have a universal concept of the same object, and this creates problems in translation. This paper aims to examine the semiotic model for equivalence or non-equivalence in translation which attempts to define the semiotic model, to use the model for translation, and to offer the benefits of this model to solving translation’s problem in equivalence and non-equivalence. Methodology: The data of this research are derived from the novel Lelaki Harimau, as the source language and L'homme Tigre, as the target language. This model is used in the Indonesian novel which has been translated into 14 languages, one of which is in French. The authors use a semiotic approach to analyze the equivalence and non-equivalence in the translation.  Main Findings: This study reveals that the concept of signified in the semiotic theory proposes two models: the first: translation using the same concept in the source text (ST) and target text (TT), which is broadly known as equivalence, the second: translation using different concept between ST and TT, this called non-equivalence. This article not only explores the issue of meaning contextually in translation, but also the use of the semiotic model in translation which shows that the language perspective depends on the relationship between the sign and the object. Applications of this study: The model for this study can be used not only in translation studies at universities but also in providing supporting data for applied linguistic studies. Novelty/Originality of this study: This study provides a novelty in translation research with a semiotic approach. The contribution of this study is that the semiotics perspective suggests that a sign in the concept level (signified) will not be universal due to different cultural backgrounds.

Translation procedure is a procedure or a method to translate the unit of language from the source language to the target language. Every linguistic part needs to be translated. It means including the proper names in the literary work. This study is aimed at identifying and analyzing the types of the proper name and their translation procedures in the novel entitled Pembunuhan di Orient Express. The problems in this study are discussed based on the theory of proper name and the theory of the translation procedure by Newmark (1988). The method used to collect the data was documentation method. This study applied the descriptive qualitative method in analyzing the data. The result of the analysis was presented using an informal method. The analysis showed three types of proper names in the data sources. They are people’s names, the name of an object, and the geographical term. The translator uses seven methods from 18 translation procedures that were proposed by Newmark (1988).

The aim of this study were to find out category shift types used in thetranslation of novel To Kill A Bird and to describe of how category shift is translatedin the novel from English into Indonesian. This study were conducted by usingdescriptive qualitative method. The data of the study were words, phrases, andclauses in the novel To Kill A Mockingbird which is translated into Indonesian byFemmy Syahrianni. It was found that there were 280 data in the novel from Englishinto Indonesian. The data analysis were taken by listing and bolding. Documentarysheets used as the instrument to collect the data. The data were analyzed based onMiles and Huberman (2014) by condensation which consists of selecting, focusing,simplifying, abstracting and transforming and then data display by using table inorder to get easy analyzing the data. The result of this study were (1) there were fourtypes of category shifts found in the novel To Kill a Mockingbird namely; structureshifts (36.78%), class shift (27.14%), unit shift (32.5%) and intra-system shift(3.27%). (2) The process of category shifts in the translation novel by havingmodifier-head in source language changed into head-modifier in target language,adverb in source language changed into verb in target language, one unit in sourcelanguage changed into some units in target language. and plural in source languagechanged into singular in target language.

Nowadays in globalization era, being able to communicate in a foreign language is of paramount importance due to its role in seeking for jobs, scholarship, etc. Translation is one of English for Specific Purpose, because is challenging and interesting job to be mastered. Because translation is not an easy work, it needs a serious attention and concentration. It can be said that the core of translation is a transfer a message without any left words missing especially the meaning. The translator shall be careful in replacing the meaning from Source Language to Target Language. In translation, some problems appear like usage of collocation in novel Twilight New Moon. The author mostly uses collocation in the novel.. The translator also translate the novel not only by method word by word, but also the translator uses modulation method and context of sentence. The use of collocation in novel makes reader easy to understand meaning of novel, get the point of message of novel

The research was aimed at investigating categories of Indonesian cultural terms translated into English, explaining techniques of applied translation, and analyzing foreignization and domestication ideologies applied in the translations of Indonesian cultural terms into English in the novel Gadis Pantai that translated into The Girl from the Coast. This research was conducted through descriptive-qualitative approach. The data were collected through document analysis including content analysis and thematic analysis. The results show that there are five categories of cultural terms identified in the novel which are translated by using 16 techniques of translation, including the applications of single and double techniques of translation. In addition to foreignization and domestication ideologies of translation, it is also revealed that there is also partial foreignization and partial domestication ideologies of translation since some of the Indonesian identified cultural terms are translated through combinations of two different techniques of translation; combinations of source-language- and target-language-oriented techniques of translation. The most frequently-applied ideology of translation is domestication (82,20%), followed by foreignization (9,82%), as well as partial foreignization and partial domestication (7,98%).

Translation is the process to transfer written or spoken source language (SL) texts to equivalent written or spoken target language (TL) texts. Translation studies (TS) relies so heavily on a concept of meaning, that one may claim that there is no TS without any reference to meanings. People’s understanding of the meaning of sentences is far more reliable than their understanding of the meaning of words. Since what people know when they know the meaning of a word is important, but the skill of incorporating that word appropriately into meaningful linguistic contexts is more important. Our interest here lies in the shift of emphasis from referential or dictionary meaning to contextual meaning of adjectives such as big, and large in translation to English language texts or vice versa. Since big and large are synonyms, it is not surprising that they can be used to describe many of the same nouns. However, they are not perfect synonyms, and there are some differences in the distribution of these adjectives which make some problems for translators especially from those languages which these kinds of differences are not so obvious.

Abstract The paper begins with an observation of the paradoxical status of Chinese as a lesstranslated source language but a much-translated target language, and that of Chinese translation studies as a much studied subject in China but a little-noted branch of translation studies in the world. It then analyzes the implications of the two current conceptions of Chinese translation studies: either (1) as a self-contained system of "translation studies in China", with China construed as a geopolitical body; or (2) as an open system of "Chinese language/culture-related translation studies", with the Chinese as a nation, a linguistic and cultural entity in an anthropological sense. It points out that the fi rst, exclusive conception has for too long kept Chinese translation studies from advancing a positive engagement with translation studies in other traditions, encouraging polarization of Chinese and non-Chinese translation studies into two opposite systems; while the second, inclusive conception relates the discipline more closely to other fields of Chinese-related academic study in the world, as well as translation studies in other languages/cultures. As such, Chinese translation studies, alongside an "applied" parallel which is more language-specific and practice-oriented, represents a linguistically medium- and culturally area-restricted branch of Partial Translation Studies under Pure Translation Studies. To substantiate its argument, the paper shows how the two conceptions may have infl uenced the interpretation of the time-honoured tenet of faithfulness-accessibility-elegance in Chinese translation studies for its conceptual sensibility and explanatory power. Résumé L’article commence par souligner le statut paradoxal du chinois, qui est une languesource moins traduite mais une langue-cible frequemment traduite, et dont les etudes de traduction chinoises constituent un sujet frequemment etudie en Chine mais une section peu cotee de la traductologie dans le monde. Il analyse ensuite les implications des deux conceptions actuelles de la traductologie chinoise : soit (1) un systeme independant de traductologie en Chine., la Chine etant consideree comme un organe geopolitique ; soit (2) un systeme ouvert d’etudes de traduction liees a la langue et a la culture chinoises., les Chinois etant une nation, une entite linguistique et culturelle au sens anthropologique du terme. Il montre que la premiere conception exclusive a trop longtemps empeche la traductologie chinoise d’avancer un engagement positif avec les etudes de traduction dans d’autres traditions, en encourageant la polarisation de la traductologie chinoise et nonchinoise en deux systemes opposes ; tandis que la seconde conception inclusive rapproche la discipline plus etroitement d’autres domaines d’etudes academiques liees au chinois dans le monde, ainsi que des autres etudes de traduction dans d’autres langues et cultures. En tant que telle, la traductologie chinoise, a cote d’un parallele .applique. qui est plus specifique a la langue et oriente vers la pratique, represente un moyen linguistique et une branche culturellement limitee a un domaine d’etudes partielles de traduction dans les etudes de traduction pures. Pour etayer son argument, l’article montre comment les deux conceptions peuvent avoir influence l’interpretation du principe, consacre par l’usage, de la fidelite — accessibilite — elegance dans la traductologie chinoise pour sa sensibilite conceptuelle et son pouvoir explicatif.

The primary purpose of this study was to examine the frequency of deforming tendencies on Persian translation of Hardy’s Tess of the d’Urbervilles based on Berman’s model. Moreover, the study set out to find out how words have been changed from the source language to fit the target language by adopting deforming tendencies. To achieve the aims of study, the researchers relied on content or document analysis as a qualitative type of study to analyze the strategies which were used in the translation of Tess of the d’Urbervilles novel from English to Persian. The data came from a sample of 300 sentences which were randomly selected from the novel translated into the Persian language by Mina Sarabi.The trustworthiness of the research findings was met through inter-rater agreement and it was reported 0.94. The results indicated that Persian translation of the work suffered from lexical mismatches, destruction of rhythm and destruction of vernacular networks, although destruction of rhythms and destruction of vernacular networks were among the most frequently used deformation tendencies. The findings also revealed that the translation has in one way or another maintained the genre and social stance of the author. Overall, it appears that Berman offers a model which is too severe on keeping the form and syntax of the source text in the Persian translation of Hardy’s Tess of the d’Urbervilles.
