In the present study, Coccinea cordifolia root was extracted with various solvents according to their increasing order of polarity and the extracts were subjected to preliminary phytochemical investigation. The extracts were then subjected to antioxidant assay using FTC, TBA, DPPH and Reducing Power assay as models and Antimicrobial assay. The Methanolic extract of the plant root has shown good antioxidant and antimicrobial activity among the extracts under study. The findings of the study here justify the traditional claim against Coccinea cordifolia root.

In the present study, Crateva magna bark was extracted with various solvents in order to their standing in the polarity chart and the extracts were then subjected to preliminary phytochemical investigation. After that we have subjected the extracts to antioxidant assay using FTC, TBA, DPPH and Reducing Power assay as models and Antimicrobial assay. The Chloroform extract has shown potential antioxidant and antimicrobial activity among all the extracts under evaluation. Ayurvedic medicines are being used increasingly to fight or prevent common diseases. Udhara vayuhara churna is a polyherbal formulation containing Piper longum (Piperceae) Zingiber officinalis (Zingiberaceae), Elettaria cardamom (Zingiberaceae), Plumbago zeylanica (Plumbaginaceae), Carum carvi (Umbelliferae), Acorus calamus (Araceae) and Embilica officinalis (Euphorbiaceae). Methanolic and aqueous extracts of Udhara vayuhara churna were screened for their antimicrobial activity against Bacillus subtilis, Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Aspergillus niger and Candida albicans. The results of antimicrobial activity of aqueous and methanolic extracts of the Udhara vayuhara churna indicated that methanolic extract inhibited the growth of one or more test pathogens than aqueous extract. Udhara vayuhara churna formulation extracts showed a broad spectrum of antimicrobial activity. Phytochemical investigation revealed the presence of tannins, saponins, alkaloids, glycosides, flavonoids and essential oils. This may be due to the multifunctional effect of all the seven plant ingredients of Udhara Vayuhara churn.

Rosmarinus eriocalyx Jord. & Fourr is a well-known aromatic and medicinal plant whose consumption serves to remedy a number of disorders, evergreen bush endemic to Algeria. The present study aimed it investigating the in-vitro anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial for two extracts of Rosmarinus eriocalyx. The antioxidant activity was evaluated by DPPH and the reducing power essay, anti-inflammatory activity with the Human Red Blood Cell (HRBC) membrane stabilization method. However, the antimicrobial activity was tested with three bacterial strain Pseudomonas aeruginosa ATCC 27853, Staphylococcus aureus ATCC25923 and Bacillus subtilis ATCC6633. The results show an excellent antioxidant and an interesting inflammatory activities but a weak power against the used strains therefore. © 2020 International Formulae Group. All rights reserved. The present study was undertaken to assess the antimicrobial potential of leaves’ extract of Green tea (Camellia sinensis) against skin associated microorganisms. The antimicrobial activity was studied through agar well diffusion method against Gram positive, Gram negative bacteria and fungus included Propionibacterium acne, Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Escherichia coli and Candida albicans in five different solvents viz. Methanol, Ethanol, Distilled water, Chloroform and Petroleum ether. The methanolic extract of Camellia sinensis showed maximum zone of inhibition against Propionibacterium acne (27 mm) and S. aureus (26 mm); ethanolic extract was most effective against Candida albicans (22 mm) and petroleum ether extract was most effective against S. aureus (20 mm). The antimicrobial analyses showed that the extracts were more effective against Gram positive bacteria than Gram negative bacteria and fungus. Comparative study of antimicrobial activity of Camellia sinensis extracts with antibiotics revealed that Camellia sinensis methanolic extract had maximum effective antimicrobial activity against all the tested microorganisms. MIC (Minimum Inhibitory Concentration) and MBC (Minimum Bactericidal Concentration) of methanolic extract of Camellia sinensis against the microbial agents under study ranged between 0.125 to 0.015625 mg/ml. The synergistic interaction of Camellia sinensis with antibiotics revealed much better results as compared to antibiotics susceptibility pattern alone. Phytochemicals analyses of Camellia sinensis included alkaloids, saponins, glycosides, proteins, phenols, tannins and phytosterols. The compounds identified by GC-MS analysis of methanolic extract of Camellia sinensis were reported to be used as water treatment, antifungals, antimicrobials and enzymatic inhibitors, improve mental alertness, antifungal, anti-HIV, anticancer, anti-inflammatory, analgesic and comonomer (e.g. for lubricating oil additives). Therefore, it may be concluded that Camellia sinensis leaves possess antibacterial and antifungal properties, which may be used as alternate drug of choice due to its lower side-effects to human skin as compared to presently used therapeutic agents.

Objective: This investigation involves the extraction, isolation, and characterization of flavonoid from a Euphorbiaceae family plant Chrozophoraplicata followed by evaluation of its antioxidant principles.Methods: The dried leaves were subjected to sequential soxhlation with polar and nonpolar solvents. Methanolic extract reveals the presence of largeamount of flavonoids. Methanolic extract was subjected to isolation using column chromatographic analysis with solvents such as petroleum ether,chloroform, hexane, ethyl acetate, methanol, and water. Further, the isolated compound was subjected to thin layer chromatography technique andspectral analysis such as infrared, 1HNMR, 13CNMR, mass spectroscopy, and high performance thin layer chromatography (HPTLC) finger printingtechniques. The compound was evaluated for in vitro antioxidant studies using 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), NO assay, reducing power assay,H2O2 scavenging assay, superoxide anion scavenging assay and β-Carotene linoleate system and in vivo antioxidative studies using carbon tetrachloride(CCl4), and acetaminophen intoxicated rats.Results: The compound was isolated in methanol:water in the ratio of 80:20 using column chromatographic technique. On the basis of phytochemical,chromatographic, and spectral analysis, the isolated compound was identified as kaempferol and finally with HPTLC finger printing technique it wasfound that the Rf value of the isolated compound was found to be 0.58 which is nearly similar to the Rf value of standard kaempferol (0.55). Hence,the isolated compound was confirmed as kaempferol and is structurally elucidated as 3,5,7-trihydroxy-2-(4-hydroxyphenyl)chromen-4-one. Thiscompound was isolated for the first time from the C. plicata leaves. The in vitro antioxidant assay of isolated flavonoid has shown a dose-dependentincrease in free radical scavenging activity using DPPH, no assay, reducing power assay, H2O2 scavenging assay, superoxide anion scavenging assay, andβ-carotene linoleate system. Further, the methanolic extract of C. plicata (MECP) leaves was subjected to single dose acute toxicity study for 14 days infemale rats on the basis of OECD guidelines 423 and the therapeutically selected doses were 200 mg/kg and 400 mg/kg. In vivo antioxidant studies inCCl4 and acetaminophen intoxicated rats indicated that the MECP leaves have significantly decreased lipid peroxidation in a dose-dependent mannerand increased the levels of catalase, superoxide dismutase, and glutathione.Conclusions: By the above results, it was concluded that the isolated compound from C. plicata leaves was confirmed as kaempferol and it possessessignificant antioxidative potentials.Keywords: Chrozophora plicata leaves, Flavonoids, Extraction, Isolation, Characterization, Methanolic extract, Antioxidant activity, Carbontetrachloride, Acetaminophen.

The antioxidant and antimicrobial potential of artichoke extract (AE) in raw beef patties (RBPs) was evaluated during the storage. The RBPs were prepared with the addition of 500 and 1000 ppm AE. Also, Escherichia coli ATCC25922 and Listeria monocytogenes ATCC19118 were inoculated to each RBP to follow the antimicrobial activity. An evaluation of the instrumental colour, pH, total phenolic content (TPC), 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging activity, TBARS and microbiological properties was carried out during storage. The evaluation revealed that the a* value decreased significantly, so that the reduction level of the AE500 and AE1000 samples during storage was  35, 57, and 56%, respectively, in the control. AE addition slightly decreased the pH of RBPs, which varied between 5.72 and 5.96. The TPC and DPPH values of samples with added 500 and 1000 ppm AE were 2 to 3-fold and 3 to 7-fold higher than in the control, respectively. Also, the TBARS values were determined as 43 and 54% lower than in the control at the end of storage when 500 and 1000 ppm AE were used. The AE in RBP inhibited the viability of total aerobic psychrophilic bacteria, coliform bacteria and yeast-mould in a concentration-dependent manner. AE prevented the growth of E. coli ATCC25922 and L. monocytogenes ATCC19118 inoculated to the RBPs. In conclusion, 1000 ppm AE was sufficient for antioxidant and antimicrobial activity in RBP. To our knowledge, this is the first study that presents the antioxidant and antimicrobial activity of AE used in a food model system.

A phytochemical investigation of the methanolic extract of Garcinia mackeaniana leaves led to the isolation, and determination of five secondary metabolites, including one benzophenone 4,3',4'-trihydroxy-2,6-dimethoxybenzophenone (1), two flavone C-glucosides vitexin (2) and its 2''-O-acetyl derivative (3), one biflavone amentoflavone (4), and one mono-phenol methyl protocatechuate (5). The chemical structures of these compounds were characterized by the NMR-spectroscopic method. These isolated compounds were isolated from G. mackeaniana species for the first time. Benzophenone derivative 1 has shown to be associated with a significant IC50 value of 14.97±0.8 µg/mL in the DPPH-antioxidant assay.

The recent research was directed to explore the phytochemical, antimicrobial and antioxidant activity of Hydrodictyon reticulatum L. The samples were then identified morphologically and anatomically. By using different solvents algal extracts were prepared. The phytochemical activity of algal samples were performed to determine the presence or absence of alkaloids, steroids, tannin, triterpenoids, saponin, terpenoids, quinine, coumarins, phlobatannins, phytosteroids and flavonoids. Two bacterial strains S. aureus and E. coli were used to determine the antibacterial activity of algal extracts. The greatest activity was appeared by the methanolic extract against the fungal strain S. aureus i.e. 12.5±0.088 mm, while the  aqueous extract showed the maximum anti-bacterial activity that was 12.2±0.058 mm beside E. coli. These findings were relatively equivalent to the results of standard Amkasin that was normally used as antibiotic in the market. The results of antifungal movement was indicated greatest having the solvent (CH3)2CO separate i.e. 1.8±0.058 mm against A. niger. While methanol extricate indicated 2.35±0.058 mm against the strain F. solani. DPPH rummaging activity, TAA and TPC were performed to determine the action of reticulatum. In the event of DPPH the most extreme IC50 recorded was from the chloroform extricate. While in TPC methanol extricate indicated most extreme esteem 67.14±0.54 mm and in TAA ethanol showed greatest esteem i.e. 0.88±0.01 µg/L. These results demonstrated that the Hydrodictyon reticulatum had phytochemical, cancer prevention agent and antimicrobial potential and suggested for pharmaceutical use.

In the course of screening of plant extracts for antimicrobial activity, the methanolic extract of Bergenia ligulata (Saxifragaceae) exhibited antibacterial activity against gram-positive bacteria. Fractionation of ethylacetate soluble phase of the methanol extract led to the isolation of bergenin (1), 11-O-p-hydroxybenzoylbergenin (2), 6-O-galloylarbutin (3) and epiafzelechin (4). Except bergenin, other compounds were isolated for the first time from B. ligulata. The current investigation was conducted to evaluate the potency of salinity to enhance the nutraceutical properties of fenugreek (Trigonella foenum-graecum L.) seedlings. Gradual doses of NaCl solution (0, 50, 100, 150 and 200 mM) were applied and the nutritional value of seedlings was determined 2 and 5 days post- germination. Moreover, the antioxidant and antimicrobial activity along with the phenolic content of the considered seedlings were assessed. The obtained results manifested that salt application to different levels could increase the amount of protein, N, Zn and Cu in the 2- and 5- day old seedlings. Salinity could also raise the amount of vitamin C, B1, B2 and B9 but only in one stage. Conversely, the amount of reducing, non-reducing and total sugars as well as that of Fe declined under stress. Compared with their unsalted synonyms, water and methanolic extracts of salt- treated fenugreek seedlings had higher H2O2- scavenging activity in the two stages, while their reducing power and free radicles- scavenging activities were promoted in the second stage only. Regarding the antimicrobial activity, water and methanolic extracts of the stressed seedlings generally exhibited better antimicrobial activity against some pathogenic microbes especially Erwinia carotovora, Bacillus subtilis and Candida albicans. Only in the second stage, most of the employed salt concentrations increased the titer of tannins, saponins, alkaloids, flavonoids and total phenols in the aqueous and alcoholic extracts. Therefore, it is recommended to salinize young fenugreek seedlings to improve its health benefits in a simple, low- cost and low- risk approach.
