Landslides are the third most frequent disaster in Indonesia. One of these landslides occurred on March 10, 2017 in residential area of Jatiradio, Cililin Village, Cililin Sub-District, West Bandung Regency, West Java Province. Post-incident investigations have produced information regarding the characteristics of the area and recommendations for disaster mitigation. At present it is known that there are still problems left unsolved in the area that need to be mitigated. The purpose of this study is to identify those unsolved problems at the study site and formulate solutions to the problem using a soil bioengineering approach. Among all the data that need to be collected are the condition of both existing vegetation and subsurface profile on the former landslide slopes at the study site. Data from the observations were then analyzed to produce recommendations regarding the application of soil bioengineering at the study site. From this study, pine trees (Pinus merkusii) is recommended to be planted on the slopes and areas around the rock gabions. This type of vegetation has fulfilled four pre-determined criterias related to the function of slope protection and groundwater regulation for this particular area and is considered suitable to be applied to the study site.

The increase in economic needs has resulted in increased community pressure on forest area. This encourage the government to open up access to utilize forest, in order to improve the community's economy. Since March 2018, access to utilize forest has been implemented in Masigit Kareumbi Game Reserve (TBMK). However, research related to the evaluation of activities has not been widely found. This study aims to evaluate and determine the optimal pine tapping management strategy in TBMK. The research was conducted in Sukajaya and Citengah Villages, South Sumedang District, using Ostrom Institutional Analysis and Development Framework, Stakeholder Analysis, and the Analysis Hierarchy Process. The result showed that, the potential of pine resin in the research location was 308,377.3 kg/year, which had a positive economic, social, and institutional impact on the community but tended to have a negative impact on the ecological aspects. Stakeholder analysis showed that the parties involved were among others KLHK, BBKSDA West Java, Sukajaya and Citengah Heads Village, Forest Farmer Group (KTH) Sawargi and Medal Kencana, Pinus Merkusii Cooperation, and the Indonesian Conservation Cadre Communication Forum (FK3I). Each stakeholder has a good relationship, however, there is still a need for a more optimal communication and coordination system between one another. The suggested strategy is to increase community assistance by FK3I and Pinus Merkusii Cooperation involvement in limiting the tapping pine resin.

1. Pimpla ruficollis is a parasite of the pine shoot moth Rhyacionia (Evetria) buoliana Schiff. (Eucosmidae) which emerges from its host a considerable time before the next generation of larvae are ready for oviposition. It seems that during this period the parasites leave the pine trees and feed on the flowers of certain Umbelliferae and probably other plants. Only after 3 or 4 weeks do they return to the pine trees where the shoots now contain larvae ready for egg laying.2. It has been shown by means of olfactometer experiments that during this first period of the adult life, the parasites are repelled by the odour of oil of Pinus sylvestris. At this time the ovaries are very small and are probably not ready for the production of eggs. After the third or fourth week of life the females become attracted by the oil of P. sylvestris and the ovaries are now relatively large.3. Since Geraniol is known to be a constituent of certain conifers, this substance was also tested. It was, however, found to be invariably repellent to the parasites.4. There is some evidence that conclusions reached as a result of experiments with P. ruficollis also apply to the ophionine ichneumonid Eulimneria rufifemur.

Land is an important commodity in society that it is both permanent and indestructible, two features which distinguish it from other forms of property. More than one person can have a relationship with the land and share the right to possess it. The right to possess a land is known as ownership right, but it is also common for people to have enforceable rights in other people’s land. This is the third party right, an example of which is where the owner of a house in a residential area agrees with neighbours that the house will only be used as a residence. This chapter discusses land and property rights, ownership rights, third party rights, and conveyancing. It also examines the distinction in English law between real property and personal property, the meaning of land, items attached to the land, fixtures and fittings, and incorporeal hereditaments.

PurposeResearch has been conducted to analyze the landslide in Banaran area, Ponorogo Regency. The landslides occurred on April 1, 2017. This study was conducted to know the subsurface conditions in the Banaran area to analyze the disaster mitigation efforts. The mitigation efforts are made to reduce the risk from landslides and possible landslides.Design/methodology/approachThe method used is the geo-electric resistivity method of Wenner–Schlumberger configuration. The research was conducted in three villages namely Banaran Village, Bekirang Village and Mendak Village.FindingsThere are 12 resistivity measuring points with a track length of 410 m and a space of 10 m. The measured resistivity range is between 1.42 Ω.m and 67.500 Ω.m. The resistivity data and the local geological maps interpreted that the rocks in the Banaran area consist of clay, tuff lapilli, volcanic breccia and andesite lava. The landslide area begins at a depth of 8–35 m below the surface which is interpreted as tuff. Also, the thickness of the landslide material and the slope is = 400 which supports the occurrence of a more prominent landslide. The results of the parameter scoring of the landslide-prone areas indicated that the research area is very vulnerable to a landslide. The results of the interpretation indicate that the geo-electric resistivity method can provide a good overview for conducting landslide analysis, that is field slippage and potential material thickness occurrence landslide.Originality/valueThis article is very specific as it attempts to discover how prone Banaran are is to landslide.

Large rainfall-induced landslides are among the most dangerous natural hazards in Taiwan, posing a risk for people and infrastructure. Thus, better knowledge about the evolution of landslides and their impact on the downstream area is of high importance for disaster mitigation. The aim of this study is twofold: (1) to semi-automatically map the evolution of the Butangbunasi landslide in south-central Taiwan using satellite remote sensing data, and (2) to investigate the potential correlation between changes in landslide area and heavy rainfall during typhoon events. Landslide area, as well as temporary landslide-dammed lakes, were semi-automatically identified using object-based image analysis (OBIA), based on 20 Landsat images from 1984 to 2018. Hourly rainfall data from the Taiwan Central Weather Bureau (CWB) was complemented with rainfall data from Climate Hazards Group Infrared Precipitation with Station data (CHIRPS) to examine the potential relationship between landslide area changes and rainfall as a triggering factor. The OBIA mapping results revealed that the most significant landslide extension happened after typhoon Morakot in 2009. We found a moderate positive relationship between the landslide area change and the duration of the heavy rainfall event, whereas daily precipitation, cumulative rainfall and mean intensity did not present strong significant correlations.

AbstractAlthough fourth-stage dispersal juveniles (JIV) of Bursaphelenchus xylophilus, the pinewood nematode (PWN), developed in the presence of both Monochamus alternatus and Psacothea hilaris, the numbers and the percentage of JIV were far higher in the presence of the former than of the latter. JIV first appeared 7 days after pupation of M. alternatus and the number increased from the day of beetle eclosion to the third day thereafter, then remained stable. We conclude that the presence of specific vectors affects both the life history of the PWN and the numbers of nematodes carried by vectors emerging from killed pine trees.

Water availability problem is encountered by Cengklik Reservoir due to drought disaster in the current year. It causes irrigation water crisis over 850 hectares crop field which of 350 hectares were not cultivated. The risk that must be faced by farmers is decrease in potential productivity, losses about more than 2.5 billion. Therefore, it needs technical solution to reduce this drought disaster risk. To obtain an alternative solution against water availability problem for drought disaster mitigation, this research used optimization of reservoir standard operating simulation. It applies field area of rice or Palawija at the second and/or the third cultivation season as decision variable, maximum productivity value as objective function, irrigation water demand as parameter depending on specified alternative crop pattern and schedule, and several constraints comprising 100% of reservoir reliability, all field is irrigated at the first and second season in which maximum non-irrigated crop field at the third cultivation season are 300 hectares. The tool used to conduct optimization was Microsoft Excel software. The result showed that crop pattern considered as an alternative solution against water availability problem in Cengklik reservoir is paddy-paddy-maize at the early of November II cultivated over 433 hectares and 1524 hectares. Risk reduction reached 9.33% in term of reservoir reliability, 23.61% in term of irrigated area, and 27.29% in term of vulnerability towards water availability crisis.

Desa Uwemanje terletak pada ketinggian >400 m dpl dan merupakan salah satu desa berpotensi di lereng pegunungan Gawalise. Karena berada di pegunungan maka desa ini memiliki topografi berbukit terjal dimana sebagian besar lahan memiliki tingkat kemiringan lereng lebih dari 40%, sehingga praktek pertanian termasuk agroforestri di desa ini sangat rawan terhadap erosi dan degradasi lahan lainnya. Komoditas utama terpenting di desa ini adalah Hasil Hutan Bukan Kayu seperti tegakan tusam yang telah berumur lebih dari 35 tahun dan merupakan hasil reboisasi oleh Dinas Kehutanan Kabupaten Donggala pada lahan kritis yang berada di desa ini. Tegakan tusam berperan penting dalam konservasi tanah dan penyimpan air (water reservoir) bagi sumber mata air. Namun, kondisinya saat ini sangat mengkhawatirkan, selain berumur tua, tegakan tusam banyak mati karena diserang oleh hama dan patogen. Salah satu kegiatan dalam program Ipteks Bagi Desa Mitra (IbDM) ini adalah pembibitan tusam (Pinus merkusii Jungh & de Vriese) bekerjasama dengan mitra tiga kelompok tani hutan di desa tersebut. Bibit tusam dari pembibitan ini diharapkan menjadi pengganti tegakan tusam yang telah tua atau akan ditanam pada lahan-lahan kritis yang masih luas di desa ini. Oleh karena itu, dalam rangka peningkatan pendapatan masyarakat serta usaha konservasi hutan dan perlindungan tanah dan air di desa ini, perlu dilakukan program pengabdian dalam hal teknik pembibitan tusam bagi anggota kelompok tani hutan tersebut. Metode-metode pendekatan yang ditawarkan dalam kegiatan ini adalah dalam bentuk pendidikan dan pelatihan bagi anggota kelompok tani mitra dengan menggunakan metode penyuluhan dan pendampingan yang berupa bimbingan teknis dan pembinaan kelompok tani dalam pembibitan tusam. Hasil pelaksanaan program yang telah dilaksanakan yaitu tersedianya ±3000 bibit tusam yang berkualitas yang siap ditanam oleh para anggota kelompok tani dan areal pembibitan tusam bagi kelompok tani. Selain itu, terjadi peningkatan pengetahuan dan keterampilan anggota kelompok tani hutan terutama dalam hal teknik pembibitan tusam.[The village of Uwemanje lies at an altitude of >400 m asl and is one of the potential villages on the slopes of the Gawalise mountains. Because it is located in the mountains, the village has a steep hilly topography where most of the land has a slope of more than 40%, so agricultural practices including agroforestry in this village are very vulnerable to erosion and other land degradation. The most important commodities in this village are Non-Timber Forest Products such as pine (Pinus merkusii Jungh & de Vriese) stands that have been more than 35 years old, and are the result of reforestation by the Forestry Service of Donggala District on the critical land located in this village. Pine stand plays an important role in soil conservation and water reservoir (water reservoir). However, the pine trees current condition is very worrying, in addition to old age, many pine trees die because of being attacked by pests and pathogens. One of the activities in science and technology program for Desa Mitra (IbDM) is a tusam nursery in collaboration with partners of three forest farmer groups in the village. The pine seedlings are expected to be a substitute for old pine stands or to be planted on the vast critical lands in the village. Therefore, in order to increase community income and forest conservation and soil and water protection in this village, it is necessary to do devotion program in the technique of pine nursery for members of forest farmer group. The methods of approach offered in this activity are in the form of education and training for members of partner farmer groups by using counseling and mentoring methods in the form of technical guidance and guidance of farmer groups in pine nurseries. The results of the implementation of the program that has been implemented is the availability of ± 3000 pine seedlings that are ready to be planted by members of farmer groups and pine nursery areas for farmer groups. In addition, there is an increased knowledge and skills of members of forest farmer groups, especially in terms of pine nursery techniques.]
