Whenever I thought back on my past experience of learning to read and write, I found that this process was like snowballing. I was very grateful to the several English teachers I had met since my childhood. They had appeared at different stages of my life and had seen me grow. If my goal in life was to roll a big snowball, then they were undoubtedly the biggest help in my life.

Abstract: The aim of this research is to investigate how the “Pathway to English” textbook facilitates students’ learning of speaking, specifically in pronunciation and stressing of words. Learning the English language involves four skills: speaking, listening, reading, and writing. As such, textbooks need to be equipped to facilitate the teaching of these skills. However, globalization and the change in what types of English is accepted in broader world contexts may make the textbook obsolete. To see if the textbooks used in Indonesian High Schools are adequate enough to facilitate the teaching of stressing, pronunciation, and speaking, the researcher studied the “Pathway to English” textbook using a content analysis method to see if it has the necessary contents to facilitate the learning of stressing, pronunciation, and speaking. The results of this study shows that the textbook is inadequate to facilitate the learning of pronunciation and stressing, but it is equipped to facilitate the teaching of general English speaking skills. This means that English teachers in High Schools of Indonesia are expected to use supporting media to teach pronunciation and stressing when using the textbook. Keywords: Pathway to English; textbook; speaking; stressing; pronunciation

Should English teachers be teaching reading or writing? The obvious answer is that they should be leaching both. Reading and writing continue to be essential skills in our society, and we have no reason to believe that their importance will diminish. A person without access to the basic tools of reading and writing is severely handicapped in the vast majority of pursuits, from earning a living to developing intellectually.

Literacy ability teaches students to be diligent in reading and writing. In this case, teacher creativity is needed in determining effective and efficient ways. Elementary school is the basis for learning literacy because elementary school is the beginning of a child learning to read and write. Due to the current situation of Covid-19, students have not been able to study at school effectively and regularly. The teaching-learning process is carried out online, and students are asked to understand the use of information technology such as Android cell phones. The students moved to provide teaching by increasing the literacy culture of students with the help of technology as a medium to support their learning, without having to forget the importance of reading and writing from their textbooks. The resulting activities are digital literacy activities and learning while playing, where students are tasked with connecting information to their group members. The results obtained by the students became more enthusiastic and interested in learning such as reading and writing lessons because they were presented attractively on the display of media and learning videos.

This paper is concerned with the relation between our capacity for alphabetic reading and writing the sound forms of languages on the one hand, and the structure of speech and language on the other. It starts from two questions: (1) What structural properties of human languages enable us to read and write their sound forms with a handful of alphabetic symbols? (2) Why is learning this skill so difficult? Ad (1) it is argued here that the basis for reading and writing in an alphabet is the inherent segmentability of speech, stemming from the synchronization of articulatory gestures during speech production. This synchronization arises from inherent properties of both speech production and speech perception. Ad (2) it is suggested here that learning to read and write with alphabetic letters is so difficult, because in the mental structure of sound forms there are no pre-existing discrete phoneme-sized segments, at least not of a kind that language users are easily aware of. This makes analysis of sound forms into such phoneme-sized segments difficult, although such analysis is a prerequisite skill for alphabetic reading and writing. For easy learning, the relation between letters and speech segments should preferably be systematic and transparent.

Writing and speaking are basically different activities, and they must be separately developed. The first step in learning to write is learning to read. The natural way to improve one's writing is to cultivate the habit of reading for pleasure. Reading is the easiest, fastest, most convenient, most enjoyable, and most generally effective way to better writing.
