In the wake of the liberalised trade regime, Pakistan is undergoing structural adjustments. At the heart of the adjustments is liberalisation of markets and prices, including freeing the currency market, reducing industrial protection, and introducing financial austerity and macroeconomic stability. The agricultural sector is also undergoing these changes, which include eliminating export taxes and other trade restrictions and reducing producer subsidies (input and output subsidies). Such changes in the sector are critical as agriculture is the largest sector of Pakistan economy.

Intersectoral terms of trade play a cruc1al role in determining the sectoral distribution of income and resource allocation in the developing countries. The significance of intra-sectoral terms of trade for the allocation of resources within the agricultural sector is also widely accepted by research scholars and policy-makers. In the context of planned development, the government specifies production targets for the agricultural sector and for different crops. The intervention of government in the field of price determination has important implications for the achievement of planned targets. In Pakistan, there is a feeling among many groups including farmers and politicians with a rural background that prices of agricultural crops have not kept their parities intact over time and that prices generally do not cover the costs of production. The feeling that production incentives for agriculture have been eroded is especially strong for the period since the early 1970s. It is argued that strong inflationary pressures supported by a policy of withdrawal of government subsidies on agricultural inputs have resulted in rapid increases in the prices paid by agriculturists and that increases in the prices received by farmers were not enough to compensate them for the rising prices of agricultural inputs and consumption goods.

India is the world’s third-largest economy after the US and China. India is also one of the leading producer of spices, fish, poultry, livestock and plantation crops, and leading exports consisted of basmati rice, meat of bovine animals, frozen shrimp and prawns, cotton and refined sugar. The study was based on secondary data collected from the various published sources, viz., various issues of handbook of RBI, FAO trade yearbook, Statistical Abstract of India, FAOSTAT, etc. The data were grouped into two periods Pre-WTO 1975-94 and Post-WTO 1995-2015.The exports volume indices for agricultural sector of India were increased by 129.41 percent from 17 in 1975 to 39 in 1994. Besides, the volume indices of imports declined by 56.16 percent from 73 in 1975 to 32 in 1994 for agricultural sector of India. The unit value indices of agricultural exports of India declined by 17.69 percent from 113 in 1975 to 93 in 1994. However, the agricultural import indices grew considerably 171.42 percent from 42 in 1975 to 114 in 1994.The quantity terms of trade for agricultural sector of India was deteriorated by 80.89 percent from 429.41 in 1975 to 82.05 in 1994. Likewise, value terms of trade for agricultural sector of India also depreciated by 67.44 percent from 269.05 in 1975 to 81.58 in 1994. The exports volume indices for agricultural sector of India were increased by 125 percent from 72 in 1995 to 162 in 2015. The volume indices of imports were also enlarged by 934.78 percent from 23 in 1995 to 238 in 2015 for agricultural sector of India. The unit value indices, which measure the average price realization, indicated a significant increase in unit value indices of agricultural exports of India turn up by 131.76 percent from 85 in 1995 to 197 in 2015. However, the agricultural import indices declined by 0.64 percent during post-WTO period. The quantity terms of trade, as well as value terms of trade for agricultural sector of India, was improved by 359.95 and 133.25 percent, respectively during post-WTO regime. The trade balance of Indian agricultural sector showed a favorable balance during pre-WTO period as well as post-WTO period.

The agricultural sector is being supported in Turkey, as well as in the world. The issue of competitiveness is observed in agriculture, despite supports. This study aims at investigating the impact of agricultural supports in Turkey on competitiveness of agricultural products. Vector autoregression (VAR) model has been adopted in the study. The internal terms of trade (TOT), percentage producer support estimate (PSE), and the producer nominal protection coefficient (NPC) variables have been included in the model. The internal terms of trade in Turkey have developed over time against the benefit of agricultural sector. PSE has had a significant impact on TOT. Therefore, the use of PSE as a political variable has been concluded as a significant. Means of support must be discussed in Turkey more than the amount of supports. In particular, supports that will provide farmers with competitive advantage and boost up product farmyard prices will be more efficient and beneficial for farmers.

From the end of the Civil War down to 1900, the American agricultural sector was subject to continuous political and social upheaval. While the South and Far West were a part of this movement, the heartland of protest remained in the Midwest. The traditional view has been that this unrest and protest was at least partially based on the worsening economic position of the farmer. Farmers complained of being exploited by moneylenders, victimized by railroads and other middlemen, cheated by speculators and faced with prices received falling faster than prices paid, thus reducing real purchasing power. This last view is put forth by Faulkner: “While the prices of farm commodities declined, those of manufactured products, dominated by monopoly practices, remained high or did not decline proportionally.”

Abstract This study aims to describe the diversification of livelihoods as a strategy achieved by the rural dweller to maintain and improve their standard of living. This issue is important to be studied in order to explore various alternative ways of the fundamental problem that is passed by them. There are four problems related to socio-economic life in rural areas, namely low labor productivity, land ownership that is getting narrower along with the large number of small farmers, relatively low household income and lower wages for agricultural laborers than construction and industrial workers. As a consequence, subsistence farming has weak prospects and cannot be relied on as the only source of livelihood for the rural population. Even though agricultural sector is no longer being promoted as a source of income, some rural residents continue to pursue farming while carrying out various supporting activities to fullfill their needs. In fact, there is a tendency for them to take advantage of the opportunities that exist in order to improve their standard of living. The rural population actually has various levels in maintaining the existence of life and increasing the standard of living of their household in accordance with the unique social, economic, ecological and cultural arrangements in an area. One of them is the focus of this research, namely the diversification of household livelihoods in rural areas in the context of rural-urban relations. We hope to find a formula that can support the capability of rural residents to diversify their livelihoods in response to urban development. To realize this goal, the research team has conducted investigations on: a portfolio of livelihood activities of rural small people in the context of the struggle for survival and improvement of their standard of living and (b) diversification of livelihoods carried out by small people in the context of rural-urban relations.

The bitter fact of the world is that mostly people are living in poverty especially in the developing countries. This paper presents some effective policies and strategies for the rehabilitation of poor inhabitants of developing world. The development and prosperity of developing countries depends on the economic condition of their inhabitants. In developing countries, mostly people are engaged with agricultural sector or with labor sector. Due to their low incomes, per capita of developing countries remain low. But by following some strategies and policies this condition may be changed. Furthermore, export of costly products is also hindrances in the way of achieving progress for developing countries. By solving brain drain, lessening their industrial imports and increasing their exports of industrial goods and increasing literacy rate are some suitable strategies discussed. But despite of all policies and strategies, the infrastructure and increasing literacy among the inhabitants of developing countries and the under developed world are also crucial for improving their per capita income and the standard of living. Without improving the standard of living of the under developed world, crimes, diseases and other wrong deeds cannot be decreased until the problem of hunger and ignorance is not solved.

Subject Outlook for the agricultural sector. Significance Floods and drought affecting Argentina’s agricultural heartland could lead to a reduction of 1.3 million hectares in the previously estimated sowing area (34.3 million hectares) for the 2016-17 harvest. Impacts The government expects GDP to expand by 3.5% this year, after an estimated 2.3% decline last year. The fiscal deficit will delay further cuts in agricultural export taxes. This harvest will not achieve the record output reached last season.

Abstract This paper examines the economic implications of a novel concept of trade diversification—latent diversification. In contrast to traditional measures, latent diversification accounts for potential movements of factors of production into activities where the country has previous exporting experience, hence presenting an additional margin through which countries can respond to shocks. The paper shows that the gap between traditional measures of diversification and latent diversification is sizeable and that latent diversification is in its own right an important determinant of macroeconomic stability. More diversified latent export baskets are associated with lower terms-of-trade volatility and, in turn, lower GDP per capita volatility, even after controlling for the degree of contemporaneous export diversification and other country characteristics.

Despite the crucial importance of information on intersectoral terms of trade in the formulation of a host of public policies, the official statistical system in Pakistan is yet to generate a statistical series of the terms of trade for the .agricultural sector on a regular basis. A number of views expressed on Pakistan's agriculture appear to be based either on results of studies that are now outdated, or on a complete neglect of the existing data that could be processed to calculate the terms-of. trade indices. This paper attempts to provide information on the movement of terms of trade for the agricultural sector for the period from 1951-52 to 1983-84. The impact of changes in terms of trade on farm output, distribution of income and efficient use of resources is also traced.
