The communication model in the family is part of the interpersonal communication. Here the role of parents can be called as the main communicator in the delivery of communication messages. To achieve the effectiveness of a parent communication certainly has its own way of delivering messages to their children, especially when children face certain problems in their social life. As an effective message delivery standard, this activity suggests three possible patterns of communication skills, including: listening communication; Open communication; and honest communication. Listening communication is a parent-to-child interpersonal communication model, or a form of communication involved, especially in responding to the psychological needs of the child. Open communication is a communication that enables messengers and message recipients to understand what they want to achieve in an ongoing communication. Parents as messengers and children as recipients of the message occupy the same position in the exchange of communication messages they are building. While honest communication is a communication model that is delivered with the aim of fostering self-esteem of children. These three models of communication, apart from being the most important way to find solutions to problems faced by children, as well as a way to counter the tendency of self-egoism of parents. With these communication patterns parents are able to absorb what children expect. And, in this way, children feel understood and appreciated by their parents.<br />Keywords: Interpersonal Communication, Listening, Open, Honest.

The involvement of family in developing academic competence and social behavior is badly needed. The role of parents particularly mother on the child of under 5 years old is very influential. The parents should keep parenting and educating their child to enable him/her socialize and communicate well. Interpersonal communication between the parents and the child is important to build the child’s character suitable to the parents’ style. The child’s character is established from the family, particularly how the parents transfer moral value, honesty, and religion to the child through good communication. The parents do not do it just by words but by behavioral modelling. The strategy of seeking information from the parents is achieved by observation and expression of the child. It is important to listen to the child’s expression. Inner character resulted from the child’s cultural background is developed from the family and community. Thus, the child can develop based on the character of his/her cultural roots. Universal education can be conducted in uniform but the culture based on local wisdom should be maintained, such as togetherness in the family, being ashamed of breaking the existing values, and being afraid of doing the wrong things.

Family is the first and foremost environment for a human child. In the family a child is raised, learns the ways of association that he will develop later in the social life environment that is outside the family. In simple terms it can be argued that the function of the family is to stabilize the family situation in the sense of stabilizing the family's economic situation. Then the family functions also educate and maintain the physical and psychological family, including religious life. Here the role of parents, especially mothers, is very influential on the development of the child. Family education is called primary education because in this environment all human potential is formed and partially developed. There are even some potentials that have developed in family education. Children will grow up to be characterless individuals if they can grow in a characteristic environment, so that the nature of every child born holy can develop optimally. Character education must start from the family to build a noble national personality. To achieve the child's character expected by parents, parenting given by the family to children is closely related to the character of the child in his growth and development. These characters will be carried to adulthood even if they form their own family. On the contrary, family failure in shaping children's character will result in the growth of a society that has no character. Therefore, every family must have an awareness that the formation of children's character is very dependent on character education at home. Furthermore, Megawangi (2003) mentions that there are at least three basic children's needs that must be met, namely maternal bonding, security, and physical and mental stimulation

The role of parents is very important in building a child's personality. It becomes not easy when the role is only carried out by a single mother. This article aims to examine how the effects of interpersonal communication is done by singgle mother to change the attitudes of children. The importance of doing interpersonal communication is then seen also using nass. The study was conducted on two single mother informants and their children using interview and observation methods. One of the single mother informants became the single mother because of a divorce and the other because her husband passed away. They both chose to raise their children themselves so they had to play a dual role in the family. They become mothers as well as the breadwinners of the family. This fact raises deception, which is the act of avoiding hurting others by lying, between mother and child. The existence of interpersonal communication can then minimize the existence of deceptions in the communication process which can affect the relationship between parents and children.
