The article deals with the semantic analysis and reveals the peculiarities of the adaptation and functioning of the adjective neologismsderived from a borrowed stemby adding a Russian derivational affix. In the course of the first-stage researchthe thematic classification of the above-mentioned “hybrid” adjectivesis made (the current samplecomprises approximately 200 lexical units). The investigation of the lexical data has shown that the majority of “hybrid” adjectives are derived from English stems and mainly consist of relative adjectives. The article analyses the main derivational patterns in the word-formation of adjectives derived from borrowed nouns and adjectives, and the most productive suffixes are revealed. It is stated that the tendency for adjective derivation from the English stems ending in -ing (the trend which was first observed in the 1990s) has been growing rapidly at the beginning of the 21st century. The analysis of variedlexical data has shown that the functioning of “hybrid” adjectives in the texts different in genre and styleis connected with the phenomenon of variationwhich consists in the difference in root spelling, as well as in the competition between the adjective suffixes. In the concluding part of the article, the authors describe peculiar properties of semantic adaptation which are typical of adjective neologisms derived from loan-word stems.

e article deals with the specificity of sports terminology which includes a lot of terms taken from the theory and methods of physical education related to the scientific and educational subjects (biomechanics, sports psychology and pedagogy, hygiene, physiology, biochemistry, etc.) and are widely used in specialized literature and socialintercourse. The characteristic features of Russian sports terminology are defined: ways of word formation; the trends to make the language sound more professional, jargon like; the international orientation of language and its active penetration in the native language; borrowing words from foreign languages and their variations. The issue concerning the foreign words borrowed in Russian sports terminology is viewed and the reasons for their appearance, place in the language, their distribution in semantic groups and their area of usage are discussed. It is pointed out that in the modern Russian sports terminology one can most often come upon English borrowings. The most important factors for the acquisition of English-derivatives in the sports language are emphasized. Some aspects of the phonetics-orthographic adaptation of sports English derivatives in the Russian language are examined and compared to the same processes in the Bulgarian language. It is pointed out that in the process of structural-semantic adaptation the English derivatives have a great influence on the differentiation and internalization of sports terminology in the native language-recipient: the polysemy is widened; homonymy appears, as well as some new synonymous lines. A classification of English derivatives according to their area of usage is introduced.

We consider the main qualification features of text units with the semantics of reference to participants in the communicative Russian speech space, taking into account lexical and gram-matical ways of expression. This allows us to determine their differential features and classifica-tion types, reflecting the dynamics in the formation of references in the system of the modern Russian language. We pay special attention to references of different forms, which not only represent the speaker’s attitude to the object of speech, characterize it, but also enhance imagery and emotionality, give us an idea of the author as a linguistic person. We emphasize that conversion should be considered a linguistic universal. It serves the organization and regulation of communication relations. The choice of a particular form of reference reflects the attitude towards the interlocutor, conditioned by a variety of factors. That is why conversion is a socially important component of dialogical speech. We determine the main parameters of the semantic, grammatical and functional features of references based on the materials of linguistic research, as well as the prospects for scientific research in this direction. A survey is conducted on the use of certain forms of references strangers among students of the Derzhavin Tambov State University. Questions related to their perception of the most frequent references in the modern Russian language are proposed. We establish that in modern Russian there is a problem when references a stranger.

The article discusses lexeme with the ending –ant from the point of view of their use in speech and semantics. This group of words is divided into lexical-thematic groups (LTG). Based on the analysis of the functioning of words that include the –ant element in modern Russian, a conclusion is drawn about the ability to replenish LTG with new vocabulary units. Both the most closed and the most open for expanding the composition of lexical-thematic groups are established.

This article sets out to analyse forms of the imperative mood, which bear the indirect meaning of obligation. The aim is to characterise the structure and semantics of phrases, in which quasi-imperative forms are used. This analysis determines the direction of grammatical transposition and its nature. It is suggested that the imperative forms with the meaning of obligation are interpretative in nature and indirectly reflect the alleged expression of will. The analysis uses descriptive and structural-semantic methods. The semantic groups of clauses that include the imperative mood forms under consideration are distinguished. The features of the use of imperative forms with the meaning of obligation in the modern Russian language are described.

The article considers the positional conditions of the transition of [é] to [ó], the causes of this phonetic transformation, which can be traced back to the Old Russian language, as well as the conditions for its gradual weakening. On this basis, the A.A. Shakhmatov’s hypothesis, interpreting this transition as a type of regressive labialization, was defined more precisely. Stylistically and orthologically significant reflexes of transition [é] to [ó] in the literary form of the modern Russian national language and its non-literary forms have been characterized and systematized.
