The purpose of the study is to search for rational engineering solutions for the main autonomous locomotive for the Eastern range of OAO Russian Railways. Research methods: methods of physical and field experiments, analytical methods for calculating the dynamics of the rolling stock. Research results and novelty: it is established that the use of a four-axle truck of a diesel locomotive TEM7 does not allow to create a locomotive that meets all the requirements of OAO Russian Railways, and the design of truck TEM7 is irrational for mainline locomotives; it is proved that the one-sided arrangement of brake blocks leads to deterioration in the locomotive braking properties. The bearing and axial towline, despite the use of an asynchronous engine, has an unsprung mass 1.5 times greater than that of the previously produced domestic analogue with a collector engine and almost the same mass of the wheel-motor unit; dynamic moments in the drive due to the lack of elastic elements during prolonged operation can reach 56% of the traction torque, which worsens the traction properties of the locomotive. Conclusion: it is advisable to carry out a design study of the drive variant with a support-frame asynchronous traction engine and an axial gearbox, as well as to conduct a technical and economic analysis and design study of a cheaper version of a diesel locomotive with sections on three two-axle bogies, maximally unified with electric locomotives, with a booster tanker module and AC-DC transmission with axial regulation of eight-pole collector motors with support-frame suspension.

The work objective is to increase the traction properties of locomotives without the use of traction drives with asynchronous traction motors and pulse width modulation. Research methods: methods of physical and field experiments, analytical methods for calculating the dynamics of the rolling stock. Conclusion: based on the conducted research, it is proposed to perform a promising diesel locomotive in the form of two sections on three two-axle bogies and a booster on two two-axle bogies, as well as to carry out experimental design work to develop an arc-type stator asynchronous motor and traction drives of a diesel locomotive using it.

Analysis and Design of 3.3 kV IGBT Based Three-Level DC/DC Converter with High-Frequency Isolation and Current Doubler RectifierThe paper presents the findings of a R&D project connected to the development of auxiliary power supply (APS) for the high-voltage DC-fed rolling stock applications. The aim was to design a new-generation power converter utilizing high-voltage IGBT modules, which can outpace the predecessors in terms of power density, i.e. to provide more power for smaller volumetric space. The topology proposed is 3.3 kV IGBT-based three-level neutral point clamped (NPC) half-bridge with high-frequency isolation transformer and current doubler rectifier that fulfils all the targets imposed by the designers. Despite an increased component count the proposed converter is very simple in design and operation. The paper provides an overview of the design with several recommendations and guidelines. Moreover, the simulation and experimental results are discussed and the performance evaluation of the proposed converter is presented.


Objectives: The main aim of this study was to investigate the factors that influence students’, academicians’, clients’, as well as developer’s preferences in choosing their preferred approach in system development, namely structured analysis design (SAD) or object-oriented analysis and design (OOAD). Methods: The research design was based on a survey methodology and a case study. For the survey, questionnaires were administered to 30 students and 38 academicians, who were randomly selected from several Malaysian universities. For the case study, the requirements of the information system were modeled and presented to several clients to elicit their feedback. The survey data were analyzed using SPSS Findings: The result shows that students preferred the use of OOAD approach, which clearly outnumbered those who preferred the SAD approach, which stood at 33%. Interestingly, the majority (53%) of academicians preferred the use of a mixture of both approaches. Likewise, the clients shared a similar view with the academicians, whereas the developer preferred the OOAD approach. Application/Improvements: Clearly, the findings suggest that both approaches are essential, but the one that is widely used by developers and preferred by students is OOAD, and thus should be given priority when it comes to structured analysis and design. As such, curriculum designers and institutions of higher learning, particularly those offering system analysis and design and related courses, should make the necessary changes to the existing curriculum such that the academic programs offered will be able to produce highly competent and skilled analysts and designers as required by the industry.

AbstractTransgenic crops are being developed with herbicide resistance traits to expand innovative weed management solutions for crop producers. Soybean with traits that confer resistance to the hydroxyphenylpyruvate dioxygenase herbicide isoxaflutole is under development and will provide a novel herbicide mode of action for weed management in soybean. Ten field experiments were conducted over 2 years (2017 and 2018) on five soil textures with isoxaflutole-resistant soybean to evaluate annual weed control using one- and two-pass herbicide programs. The one-pass weed control programs included isoxaflutole plus metribuzin, applied PRE, at a low rate (52.5 + 210 g ai ha−1), medium rate (79 + 316 g ai ha−1), and high rate (105 + 420 g ai ha−1); and glyphosate applied early postemergence (EPOST) or late postemergence (LPOST). The two-pass weed control programs included isoxaflutole plus metribuzin, applied PRE, followed by glyphosate applied LPOST, and glyphosate applied EPOST followed by LPOST. At 4 weeks after the LPOST application, control of common lambsquarters, pigweed species, common ragweed, and velvetleaf was variable at 25% to 69%, 49% to 86%, and 71% to 95% at the low, medium, and high rates of isoxaflutole plus metribuzin, respectively. Isoxaflutole plus metribuzin at the low, medium, and high rates controlled grass species evaluated (i.e., barnyardgrass, foxtail, crabgrass, and witchgrass) 85% to 97%, 75% to 99%, and 86% to 100%, respectively. All two-pass weed management programs provided 98% to 100% control of all species. Weed control improved as the rate of isoxaflutole plus metribuzin increased. Two-pass programs provided excellent, full-season annual grass and broadleaf weed control in isoxaflutole-resistant soybean.

Choosing a high-speed rail vehicle depends on many factors. On the one hand, there are requirements for ensuring the quality of service for passengers, on the other hand, there are constraints resulting from the parameters of available infrastructure. Also a relation of the benefit and financial costs associated with the purchase and the operation of rolling stock is essential. Technical characteristics of vehicles selected for operating a particular system is a compromise between the three groups of requirements. In this article technical parameters of railway infrastructure and rolling stock are classified and then analysed from the TSI requirements point of view.

Currently, most of the vehicles make use of fossil fuels for operations, resulting in one of the largest sources of carbon dioxide emissions. The need to cut our dependency on these fossil fuels has led to an increased use of renewable energy sources (RESs) for mobility purposes. A technical and economic analysis of a one-stop charging station for battery electric vehicles (BEV) and fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEV) is investigated in this paper. The hybrid optimization model for electric renewables (HOMER) software and the heavy-duty refueling station analysis model (HDRSAM) are used to conduct the case study for a one-stop charging station at Technical University of Denmark (DTU)-Risø campus. Using HOMER, a total of 42 charging station scenarios are analyzed by considering two systems (a grid-connected system and an off-grid connected system). For each system three different charging station designs (design A-hydrogen load; design B-an electrical load, and design C-an integrated system consisting of both hydrogen and electrical load) are set up for analysis. Furthermore, seven potential wind turbines with different capacity are selected from HOMER database for each system. Using HDRSAM, a total 18 scenarios are analyzed with variation in hydrogen delivery option, production volume, hydrogen dispensing option and hydrogen dispensing option. The optimal solution from HOMER for a lifespan of twenty-five years is integrated into design C with the grid-connected system whose cost was $986,065. For HDRSAM, the optimal solution design consists of tube trailer as hydrogen delivery with cascade dispensing option at 350 bar together with high production volume and the cost of the system was $452,148. The results from the two simulation tools are integrated and the overall cost of the one-stop charging station is achieved which was $2,833,465. The analysis demonstrated that the one-stop charging station with a grid connection is able to fulfil the charging demand cost-effectively and environmentally friendly for an integrated energy system with RESs in the investigated locations.

In this paper, the characteristics of two modes of high back pressure reconstruction techniques for 150 MW reheat turbine units were researched. One was reconstruction of double back pressure and double rotors and the other was one-off reconstruction of LP cylinder. The former redesigned for lower pressure(LP) rotors for running at high back pressure, and hydraulic coupling bolts adopted to achieve the switch of low pressure rotors that run at high and lower back pressures. The one-off reconstruction of LP cylinder has achieved the switch of static and dynamic blades between high and low pressure. The two reconstruction both realized heat supply on the high back pressure condition, utilized cold source loss and increased the unit efficiency. After reconstruction, the economic index under both normal back pressure condition and high back pressure heating condition have been obtained by performance test. Under the high back pressure heating condition, the unit heat rate reaches 3700-3800kJ/kW.h, and the thermal efficiency has achieved 95-97%.

We integrate tools to monitor information acquisition in field experiments on discrimination and examine whether gaps arise already when decision makers choose the effort level for reading an application. In both countries we study, negatively stereotyped minority names reduce employers' effort to inspect resumes. In contrast, minority names increase information acquisition in the rental housing market. Both results are consistent with a model of endogenous allocation of costly attention, which magnifies the role of prior beliefs and preferences beyond the one considered in standard models of discrimination. The findings have implications for magnitude of discrimination, returns to human capital and policy. (JEL C93, D83, J15, J16, J24, J71, R31)

Citrus melanose, caused by Diaporthe citri, is a major disease of fresh market grapefruit which is controlled primarily by preventive applications of copper fungicides. The goal of this research was to improve melanose control without increasing the total amount of metallic copper utilized. Disease control was assessed in field experiments for 3 years using one, two, three, or four applications of copper fungicides in which the same total amount of metallic copper was applied per season in each program. Melanose was severe in 1995 and 1997, and the four-application schedule provided better control than the one-, two-, or three-application programs. In 1996, disease pressure was low and all programs and fungicides provided equally effective control. Analysis of copper residues on the fruit indicated that loss of protection was attributable more to increase in fruit surface area when fruit were growing rapidly than to removal of copper by weathering. On larger, slower-growing fruit, loss of copper residues was apparently due to both factors. Economic evaluation of improved packouts of fresh market fruit and additional application costs indicated that net returns would be increased by $650 to $1,250 per hectare during years in which melanose was severe when the four-spray program was compared to a single spray.

This study experimentally tests the effects of in-store background music on the shopping behavior of its customers. Field experiments employ pre-experiment the one group pretest-posttest. The researcher chooses a kind of musics tempo and volume as structural characteristics (2 x 2 factorial experiment).  The analysis technique used is the analysis of variance (ANOVA).  The results of the analysis found that tempo and volume of music did not play a significant role in the amount of money spent, but influence significantly on shopping time and mood change. The research answered urgency for designing the musical environment in the retail stores to influence shopping experience and consumer responses, especially for a small store (minimarket).
