Abstract Advertising media uses a lot of public space as a place to advertise which can reduce the function of public space in urban areas. This study aims to determine the use of urban space as a medium for outdoor advertising that interrupts and reduces the function of space. This study uses a qualitative approach with descriptive data analysis methods. The four intersections on Jalan Raya Dalung have interrupted the function of public spaces, including functions as pedestrians (pedestrian paths), telajakan (as an element of reforestation), protecting the environment, and as borders. This study examined new religious patterns and behaviours in Indonesian Muslims during the New Normal era. This new religiosity is an impact of government regulations and recommendations from community organisations regarding social and physical distancing restrictions due to the spread of Covid-19. This study used a sociological approach to analyse changes in religious and social behaviour of Indonesian Muslims in public spaces qualitatively. This study found five main aspects that indicate a new form of religiosity for Indonesian Muslims in the New Normal era, namely; a shift in worship practices from a public space to a private space, a decrease in the capacity of the physical space that has an impact on decreasing the routine of worship, the emergence of new challenges for the authorities and public policy to prepare an area for more personal religious activities, the disappearance of symbolic worship practices, and finally, the blurring of abangan Muslim groups based on waqi'iyah (contemporary/contextual) ijtihad. These findings are analysed using the theory of public space from Jurgen Habermas's. This study proposes a new pattern of religiosity for Indonesian Muslims in the New Normal era, i.e., the adjustment of Shari'a by way of independent legal reasoning to maintain a wider maslahat, public welfare.

With growing levels of homelessness, many municipalities in western jurisdictions are increasing social control of public displays of poverty through criminalisation, marginalisation and banishment. This has recently been apparent in England with the introduction of public spaces protection orders. Based on notions of localism, these grant local government significantly enhanced powers to regulate public space. This article uses the English example to provide a critical, empirically informed, exploration of how populist neo-liberal rationalisations about the street poor are finding increasing favour among local authorities. It charts how in a period of austerity, with municipalities struggling to fulfil welfare obligations to the homeless and other poor, banishment provides a cheaper solution to citizens’ concerns about visible displays of poverty in public space. The article investigates the troubling ways in which municipalities endorse a neo-liberal authoritarian approach to public consultations to claim legitimacy for introducing measures that target vulnerable minorities. It also examines how opponents, with limited success, have challenged such measures and the predominant neo-liberal–populist narrative associated with them.

Abstract: This paper chronicles a case of land dispute through a sociospatial lens (Gottdiener, Hutchison and Ryan, 2015) with a specific case of the dynamic of urban spatial management of the city of Surabaya. Key structural changes of public spaces in Surabaya have been running starting from the late 1990s for the local government was given authority to manage its space. Simultaneously, the plethora of freedom spirit since Reformasi 1998 has been reshaping citizens’ politics towards their city as public space. Relying on secondary data, this paper argues that the dynamic of city spatial management has been colored by struggles of various actors in reclaiming public places. Surabaya, like other big cities all over the world, is an open field for power contestations over a space for living. Intisari: Paper ini mengurai sebuah kasus sengketa lahan menggunakan lensa sosiospasial (Gottdiener, Hutchison and Ryan, 2015) dengan mengangkat dinamika pengaturan ruang urban di Kota Surabaya. Japanese and Balinese mixed marriage children have become bilingual since the early years of the language acquisition period. They acquired the inheritance of the languages (Indonesian, Japanese, and Balinese) from their parents. This research was conducted to find the language choice of mixed marriage children of Balinese and Japanese in Bali. The language use domain is divided into two: family and social. In each domain, the topic, the background of the situation, and the people involved are determined. The data was gathered using questionnaires employed to 10 mixed married families. The method includes observation and interviews. The result of data analysis showed that in the family domain there are variations of the children's language preferences when communicating. The children choose Indonesian when communicating with the father, and Japanese with the mother. However, there are also other options for using mixed code between Indonesian, Japanese and also English. In the social domain, the language choice is more homogeneous, which is Indonesian. Meanwhile, it was found that there was resistance towards the use of Balinese by Japanese-Balinese Mixed Marriage Family (JBMF) and the factors that affected the children's language choice were also discovered.
