Abstract Purpose ‒The purpose of this study was to explore the relationship between teachers’ performance appraisal methods and teachers’ job performance and its implications to teaching and learning explicitly in the context of Islamic Boarding Schools in Gontor, East Java Indonesia, a district that has more than 10 school branches in Indonesia. Designed/methodology/approach ‒A survey method was employed to collect the data from 110 teachers who had two to five years of teaching experiences. In data analysis, the researchers had applied a two-step approach to test the measured variables representing three latent constructs namely classroom observation, lesson planning, self-appraisal, and teachers’ job performance as the criterion variable.   Findings and Results ‒ The findings from descriptive analysis indicated that teachers perceived self-appraisal and classroom observation more frequently than lesson plan. Teachers viewed lesson plan as an adequate method used in teachers’ appraisal. Moreover, correlation analysis revealed that two of TPA methods namely classroom observation and self-appraisal, were positively correlated with teachers’ job performance, while lesson planning was found to have no correlation with job performance. The regression results concluded that the best predictor of teachers’ job performance was lesson planning. Research limitations/implications ‒This research only focuses on Islamic boarding school in Gontor East Java Indonesia.  Originality/value: The implementation of teachers’ appraisal in Islamic Boarding School is unique to educational institutions in Muslim country such as in Indonesia. Thus, the findings could be generalized to other school branches of Gontor and schools which have similar characteristic and curriculum to those of Gontor. Keywords: Multiple regression analysis, Performance appraisal, Classroom observation, Self-appraisal, Lesson plan, Job performance, Instructional leadership, Islamic Boarding School. Paper type: Research paper

AbstractThere are many tools available over the Internet providing educators with the platform to implement online rubric marking assessment (ORMA). However, only a few success stories and studies about its usage among Malaysian higher education institutions have been reported, particularly in general courses such as Islāmic and Asian Civilizations (“TITAS”). Hence, this study aims to investigate students’ acceptance of an online rubric marking assessment of TITAS course at Universiti Malaysia Pahang (UMP). The study is descriptive using a self-administered online survey which deployed through UMP's official learning management system (LMS). The participants comprised 152 students out of a population of 1,590 students who took the TITAS course in Semester II of the 2016/ 2017 session. The analysis shows that in general the students were ready and very positive towards the use of ORMA due to its effectiveness and impact on their learning. Although there were many challenges in implementing ORMA, generally it was worth implementing in transforming higher education in an effort to embrace Industrial Revolution 4.0.Keywords: Performance appraisal, classroom observation, self-appraisal, lesson planning, job performance, instructional leadership, Islamic boarding schools

This study discusses the competence of Madrasah Ibtidaiyah teachers in the use of technology and information in learning with competency indicators being the ICT training curriculum for madrasa teachers compiled by the Jakarta Education and Religious Technical Training Center. This study aims to determine the competence and problems of Islamic boarding school teachers in the use of information and communication technology in online learning during this covid 19 period. This study uses a case study with all teachers as respondents at MIN 4 Langkat. The research method used in this research is a survey method using a questionnaire that is shared via a google form. Analysis of the data used is a descriptive analysis that describes the qualifications of teacher competence in the use of ICT into four levels, namely very low, low, medium, and high. From the results of the data that has been analyzed, it was found that the competence of teachers in ICT is very low in the ability to use and utilize applications, which is 52%. Furthermore, a very low indicator is found in the experience aspect of participating in training at 57%. This shows that training activities are the most dominant factor causing the low competence of teachers in the use of ICT in learning and therefore the most effective solution to overcome them.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine how preservice teachers (PSTs) developed their adaptive competence in lesson planning through repeated rehearsals and reflections in an online learning environment. Methods: A case study design utilizing descriptive analysis was used to analyze data collected from a series of lesson plan iterations made by nine PSTs in a physical education teacher education program. All participants attended one online introductory methods course, which consisted of a synchronous lecture and laboratory components to learn fundamental instruction and management skills in teaching physical education. Findings: PSTs made positive adaptations in five core practices in their lesson plan iterations. However, the frequency of adaptations in each core practice varied in different lesson components. The findings suggest that the complexity of content being taught and opportunities embedded in each lesson component may influence how adaptations were made in lesson plans. Conclusions: Repeated rehearsals and reflections can facilitate PSTs’ development of adaptations in lesson planning in an online environment. However, learning environments may prevent PSTs from adapting certain core practices.
