Abstract This paper is attempting to study the prominent Muslim scholar in Turkey, Said Nursi Badiuzzaman’s proposal for educational reform and his alternative method to the old educational system in Turkey during his time. During the time of Nursi, Turkey had been heavily influenced by secularism under the leadership of Kamal al-Tartuk. The religious values had been marginalized from the practical aspects of man’s life. At the same time, the Muslims world had been dominated by the West in science and technology giving them the strength to control the economic power of the world. This domination had challenged the Muslims intellectually, spiritually and morally. It led to the weak conditions of Muslims. Said Nursi observed that those problems of Muslim could be solved through the educational reform program. He criticized the prevalent educational system in Turkey at that time because it could not produce a balance personality of Muslims as well as it failed to achieve a progress in society. Therefore, the system of education, according to him, must be reoriented accordingly. He proposed for a restructure of the curriculum in order to be aligned with the requirements of Islam and adjusted with the requirements of modern time. Although Nursi’s idea of educational reform was aimed at every level including primary level, secondary level, and university level, he gave emphasis on the university level. This paper did not only examine the theoretical dimensions of his educational reform but also highlighted the practical applications of the process.   Keywords: Said Nursi, education reform, education system, modern time, science, technology. Kata Kunci: Said Nursi, reformasi pendidikan, system pendidikan, masa moden, sains, teknologi.

The paper analyzes CLIL (Content and Language Integrated Learning) as a teaching method contributing to training competitive specialists in demand both in the Russian and international labor markets. CLIL has become popular in the Russian system of higher education while insufficient understanding of the conditions for its effective implementation in our country often leads to unsuccessful foreign experience adoption. The paper aims to study the specifics of the Russian educational system and its potential as a platform for CLIL implementation. The foreign practices and CLIL-methodology are analyzed with the objective to identify a number of didactic principles and key factors affecting the choice of a model and form of CLIL for a particular educational paradigm. The specificity of the Russian educational system is analyzed from the standpoint of the obstacles to CLIL implementation. Based on the results of the study, it is determined that CLIL implementation in Russia is possible. However, this methodology should be adapted to the Russian reality. The author suggests an adaptation mechanism that implies the following measures: approving CLIL at the university level, establishing interaction between the university and businesses to jointly develop a training plan, creating a team of CLIL-methodology developers at the university level, providing conditions for professional retraining of subject teachers in CLIL methodology, establishing interaction between subject teachers and linguists for the development of CLIL-courses.

The Muslim world  has witnessed remarkable developments in its educational system in the last four decades. Such developments include the founding of schools, establishment of universities, publication of journals, and organization of conferences and production of books, for the purpose of Islamization. It is obvious that knowledge is central to all these Islamizing initiatives as its integration is fundamental to the entire process of Islamization. Consequently, there are contributors to the curriculum integration level of Islamization by Muslim scholars across the world who have attempted to Islamize knowledge in their various areas. However, there is little attention to the professional requirements for integration of knowledge for Islamization especially at the university level.  That informed the question, whose job is it to integrate the curriculum for Islamic universities? The purpose of this paper is to address this question. Utilizing a combination of the analytical method and creative synthesis, this paper is grounded in the scholarship of pragmatist philosophical foundations of the curriculum.  It is hoped to provide guiding principles to the practice of integrating knowledge for Islamization. Such principles for curriculum development for Islamic universities, may also curb the growing trend of curriculum integration without the requisite professional curriculum-making considerations, portraying the Islamization of Knowledge (IOK) project as unsystematic.

The educational system in Japan has traditionally been focused on the “one nation, one language” ideology. This has led to the marginalization of indigenous and immigrant languages. As a consequence, heritage speakers are dealing with the loss of their heritage languages. However, there are isolated movements addressing the maintenance of the heritage languages, though they haven’t had a long-lasting effect on the educational system. In an attempt to contribute to reversing this language and identity loss, we based our research on two main points: 1) the belief that creating an informed partnership will help heritage language speakers (HLS) to integrate in the mainstream education space (Cummins, 2014) and 2) confidence in the importance of interconnecting the isolated movements for language maintenance. Would it be possible to achieve it in the Japanese educational context? Can we start scaffolding this new structure of informed partnership from the university level? In order to try to prove this point of view successfully, this article describes the creation at the university level of a class about Heritage languages and speakers in Japan, inspired by the Content and Language Integrated Learning model (CLIL). This class was meant to support and interact with another class called “Spanish for heritage students” that was developed at the same university. The student population is 14, almost half of them with a heritage language or culture. The course duration was one semester. The contents that were selected to reach the class goals are mentioned, as well as some points of view regarding what should be done to shift the Japanese educational system from a homogeneous stance to a multicultural inclusive posture. And in such a short time we could evidence an evolution in students’ critical awareness of the current immigrants’ heritage language and cultural situation in Japan. Working with specific vocabulary, reading from authentic sources, discussing contemporary articles among them, they could give shape to their thoughts in Spanish in order to express their opinions and possible solutions to this important matter.

For Iraqi EFL learners who are studying English pronunciation in a traditional instruction method often requires more effort and hard work. Thus, using new methods of teaching such as the flipped classroom model (FCM) is necessary to facilitate learning and improve performance. Hence, this study reports on explanatory research that investigates the effect of using the FCM in the teaching of English pronunciation for Iraqi EFL learners at the university level. The study implemented mixed research methods for data collection in a quasi-experimental analysis. Therefore, two tests were conducted on the assigned groups to measure the effect of the FCM before and after the intervention. Besides, a questionnaire and interviews were used on the experiment group students to collect data about their perceptions of the FCM. The study length (lasted)  was 15 weeks and is comprised of 60 students from the department of English, College of Arts at the University of Anbar. The students were divided into two groups, experimental, and control with 30 students in each group. The findings revealed that there was a significant statistical difference between the two groups in favour of the experimental group with better performance, indicating that the FCM has considerably assisted the Iraqi EFL learners to improve their English pronunciation. Moreover, the students expressed their positive feedback and satisfaction on the use of the FCM in their responses to the questionnaire and the interviews. As such, the current study recommends further research to study the effect of applying the FCM in areas and disciplines other than language learning.
