It seems that many English language learners have deficiency to write persuasively. This portent has been observed among university students, particularly those from technical fields. Therefore, the present study examines the use of ethos, pathos and logos in persuasive email writing and determines if these features were used appropriately. The participants involved in this research were 43 third-year Malaysian engineering students. The task evaluated was persuasive email writing, and the data was obtained from an official university website forum. The data was analysed qualitatively by using Aristotelian rhetorical theory. The results show that there were some persuasive techniques used by the students in their email writing. It appears that the appeal to pathos was preferred highly in directly connecting with the emotions of the instructors. This was followed by appeals to ethos, where the students used their own ethicality and credibility to persuade the instructor into giving them an extension deadline of their classwork. The findings further revealed that appeal to logos were not used in a very persuasive manner, which could also due to avoiding logical fallacies. Therefore, the present study shows the engineering students prefer to link with emotions in their email writing in achieving their goals.

The work of the engineer in design, research, or development very often involves extensive arithmetical computations. For this he uses a slide rule, computing machine, and sometimes logarithms, but first the factors are set up in some convenient form for easy manipulation. In all his work the engineer is concerned with two things: short cuts to save time, and accuracy. Herewith is outlined a method which constitutes somewhat of a short cut and at the same time results in increased accuracy for arithmetical computation. It is a method much used by engineering students and practicing engineers; it is very convenient, and should be made available to high school students.

Sovereign Wealth Funds (SWFs) are becoming increasingly important in the international monetary and financial system, attracting growing attention. SWFs are government-owned investment funds, set up for a variety of macroeconomic purposes. They are commonly funded by the transfer of foreign exchange assets that are invested long term, overseas. SWFs are not new, and some of the longer-established funds—for example those of Kuwait, Abu Dhabi, and Singapore—have existed for decades. However, high oil prices, financial globalization, and sustained, large global imbalances have resulted in the rapid accumulation of foreign assets particularly by oil exporters and several Asian countries. As a result, the number and size of SWFs are rising fast and their presence in international capital markets is becoming more prominent.

The paper describes some features of the work of a special Service Committee set up by the Admiralty, for the purpose of standardizing drawing office practice in certain of their design departments. Basic principles are established for the guidance of designers and draughtsmen when preparing drawings for interchangeable components, and logical methods of approaching solutions to dimensional problems and of stating these on drawings are discussed. Particular attention has been paid to such problems as the best method of analysing, and dimensioning and applying tolerances to interchangeable components which involve tapered, concentric, or positional features such as holes and studs. Stress is laid upon the need for foreseeing, and avoiding as far as possible in the design stage, any special difficulties which may arise in practice in the construction of manufacturing equipment or of practical gauges for controlling the dimensions of components. It is understood that the British Standards Institution have in contemplation the preparation of a handbook dealing with the subject of the dimensioning of production drawings and of indicating the tolerances on them. Such a handbook, when completed, not only would be of great use to industry at large, but wouldal so form a valuable textbook for courses of instruction to engineering students in technical colleges and universities. It is hoped that this paper may be the means of stimulating thought on this aspect of interchangeable manufacture and that it will provoke discussion which may lead to the development of a uniform system suitable for use both by Service Departments and by industry in general.
