The aim of the present study was to evaluate the severity of vestibular drop attack (VDA) in Ménière’s disease (MD) and to examine the association between VDA severity and other MD-related complaints. The study used a cross-sectional survey design using an electronic questionnaire. The mean age of participants was 56.7 years, and the mean duration of MD was 12.4 years. Four categories of VDA were identified based on level of severity. VDA occurred in 305 (50.7%) of the 602 patients. Of these, 133 patients (22%) experienced mild VDA (i.e., associated with tripping); 80 (13%) experienced moderate VDA (i.e., associated with fall threat unless they had been able to grab support); and 92 (15%) experienced severe VDA (i.e., patients fell to the ground, as in a classical Tumarkin attack). In 70%of participants, VDA occurred less than once a week. VDA lasted for only a few seconds in 90%of participants. 87%reported single attacks, whereas 13%experienced VDA in clusters. VDA was associated with visual auras, reduced quality of life, poor postural control, and fatigue. Approximately half of MD patients experience VDA with varying degrees of severity. If VDA causes falls or near-falls, the attacks should be appropriately treated.

Cancer patients experience a considerable number of symptoms during the course of their disease. Of these symptoms, chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting (CINV) is one of the most reported and it increases the cancer burden on patients. This study aims to assess the current status of CINV among Jordanian cancer patients, with regard to its incidence and management. A descriptive cross-sectional survey design was used. The study sample was 185 cancer patients. The mean age of participants was 46.6 years ( SD = 15.5, range = 18-76) and were mainly female (56.8%). The incidence of nausea and vomiting was high at 71.4% and 57.3%, respectively. Most of the patients (89.7%) received a 5-HT3 antagonist therapy combined with corticosteroids therapy (81.1%). This study demonstrated a high incidence rate of all types of CINV, which was undertreated. Antiemetic treatment could be improved by encouraging nurses to introduce the internationally agreed guidelines into their daily clinical practice.

The aim of the current study was to demonstrate the relationship between violence against women (VAW) in intimate partner relationships and academic presenteeism of students enrolled in business and engineering programs, at Peruvian universities. This study adopted an exploratory cross-sectional survey design through a survey of 2640 university students from the business and engineering schools of 34 Peruvian universities. It was found that 96.5% of the respondents reported academic presenteeism and 32.0% are survivors of VAW. Partial least squares regression found that VAW generates 8.47 days lost due to academic presenteeism, which at the same time generates 15.12 critical incidents with professors and colleagues, during the academic year. Finally, it was demonstrated that VAW is a determining factor that explains 7.2% of university students’ academic presenteeism. This study is among the very few that empirically seek to explore the actual time that students use in a day at university. Thus, it measured actual academic productive hours of university students in Peru.

Objective. To assess the knowledge, attitudes, and practices of Iranian physicians regarding contact isolation precautions. Design. Data were collected between May and November 2002 using a cross-sectional survey design. Setting. Teaching hospitals in Shiraz, Iran. Participants. A total of 155 physicians: 78 attending clinicians and 77 resident physician surgeons or internists. Results. The mean scores for knowledge and attitude were acceptable, with 71% of physicians scoring the maximum for knowledge and 65% achieving the maximum scores for attitude, whereas the mean score for practice was low, with only 26% achieving the maximum score. A good level of knowledge be associated with a good attitude (odds ratio [OR], 68.4 [95% confidence interval {CI}, 20.0-285.6]; P< .001), good practices were associated with good knowledge (OR, 22.5 [95% CI, 7.1-91.3]; P< .001), and a good attitude was associated with good practice (OR, 20.0 [95% CI, 5.7-105.2]; P<.001). Conclusion. Although strong associations were found among knowledge, attitude, and practice, the level of compliance with precautions was not nearly as high as it should be.
