The purpose of the article is to define the semantics of the actional forms and compositional structures of circle dances and dancing pantomimes featuring the anthropomorphic images which are characteristic of the traditional annual calendar, rites of passage, and family routine ceremonialism laying the original background of the Ukrainian artwork. The methodology rests on the grounds of the complex approach and the application of analytical (art-critical, philosophical, cultural approaches to the field of study), historical (the Ukrainian choreography genesis study), cultural (examining functions performed by folk dancing culture in the spiritual life of the Ukrainian ethnos) and semiotic (analysis of dance signs structure and dancing symbols semantics) methods. Scientific novelty: the author has conducted a complex art critical research of the anthropomorphic images that became symbols in the Ukrainian national tradition with the determination of their in-depth semantic meaning and functional role in the national dancing art.  Conclusions. Within the imagery richness of the Ukrainian folk choreography, there are a lot of sign-symbols, character-symbols represented in dance space patterns, and figures reproduced by performers’ plastic movements. The study of the structural-verbal and symbolic features of these choreographic patterns gives reasons to claim about their undoubted archaic roots in a play mode reflecting the unique variant of the transitional ritual (passage rite) related to an individual’s life, his status, and the external world.

The goal of this research lies in the description of artistic uniqueness of the philosophical lyrics of S. S. Vasilyev. The author reviews the problem of the poetic language of Vasilyev’s philosophical poems from the perspective of determination of the role and function of poetic images, as well as the techniques of rhetorical patterns, stylistics and syntax as method of expressing the original philosophical views. Examination of the philosophical lyrics of S. S. Vasilyev required an overview of the context of philosophical poetry of the Yakut classics – A. E. Kulakovsky, A. I. Sofronov – the forerunners of S. S. Vasilyev.  It is worth noting that the poet scrupulously adhered to the experience and traditions of his forerunners. The lyrical works of S. S. Vasilyev were oriented towards the poetics of philosophical works of the first poets. The scientific novelty lies in the fact that the poetics of the philosophical lyrics of S. S. Vasilyev is examined on the basis of literary studies for the first time. The author determines the main ideological content of the poet's philosophical lyrics: he enhanced the semantic meaning of poetic images borrowed from the folk lyrics. The designated by the poet symbolic images are comprehensible and effective means of artistic reproduction of the philosophical concepts. The rhetorical references, questions that are specific to the philosophical lyrics overall, served as the main techniques of developing the theme of the philosophical works of S. S. Vasilyev, described his personal reflections, as well as the author’s idea of the lyrical works.

This study is firstly built on the determination of the orientalist elements in Turkish Airlines' commercial film Journey, which was broadcast in the Super Bowl final of the 2019 American Football League, and how Turkish culture is represented in Istanbul with these orientalist elements. In the context of the sample handled in the study, Turkish architectural structures, Turkish historical structures, Turkish Islamic cultural elements, and Turkish traditions are included, and the presentation of Istanbul from the eyes of a “foreigner” with an orientalist point of view has been handled with the method of semiotic analysis. The main problem of the study is on the different presentation of the East and Istanbul, despite the usual orientalist perspective in media contents and especially in advertising. In this sense, it focuses not on anti-orientalism, but on the conclusion that orientalism is presented with the change of classical narratives.

Purpose Drawing on food consumption research and human-animal studies, this paper aims to explore how the meanings related to a living horse may be transferred to those of horsemeat. This is accomplished by constructing a nuanced understanding of how different semantic meaning categories of accepting/avoiding consuming horsemeat relate to each other. Design/methodology/approach The current data are collected from various sources of media discussions, including online news, online discussion forums, blog postings and printed articles, generated in Finland after the year 2013. The data are analysed applying Greimas’ (1987) semiotic square to open up the semantic meaning categories appearing in the media discussions. Findings The semiotic square shows that the meanings of horsemeat arise between the binary oppositions of human-like and animal-like. In this structure, the category of human-like makes eating horsemeat impossible, whereas the category of animal-like makes horsemeat good to eat. The main categories are completed and contrasted by the categories of not human-like and not animal-like. They represent horsemeat as an acceptable food, but only after certain justifications. Research limitations/implications The data are based on Finnish media texts, and therefore, the identified categories are interpreted in this specific cultural context. Originality/value The current semiotic analysis adds to the existing food consumption research by shedding light on the cultural barriers that make something edible or inedible. By so doing, the findings present a more nuanced and dynamic understanding of the horse as a special kind of meat animal and the justifications for eating horsemeat. Consequently, the findings offer new insights concerning changing food consumption behaviours into a more sustainable direction, pointing out the hidden meanings that influence this process.

This study is devoted to determining the geometric, kinematic and dynamic characteristics of a vehicle. To this purpose, it is proposed to use a complex approach applying the models of deformable body mechanics for describing the oscillatory movements of a vehicle and the computer vision algorithms for processing a series of object images to determine the state parameters of a vehicle on the road. The model of the vehicle vertical oscillations is produced by means of the viscoelastic elements and the dry friction element that fully enough represent the behavior of the sprung masses. The introduced algorithms and models can be used as a part of a complex system for monitoring and controlling the road traffic. In addition, they can determine both the speed of the car and its dynamic parameters and the driving behavior of the individual drivers.

The paper is devoted to the analysis of Ukrainian paroemias with somatic components, determination of their quantitative ratio, and semantic meaning of the most common representative ones. Paroemias in the present study mean proverbs and sayings, that help to understand the linguistic picture of the world, a person's place in this world, the paradigm of his/her ideas about himself/herself, the environment, moral values, and so on. The close connection of somatics with everything that surrounds a person, contributes to the symbolization of the functions of different parts of the body, plays an important role in modeling the somatic fragment of the linguistic picture of the world. The conditionality of the consideration of somatisms is explained by the fact that they perfectly represent the anthropocentric worldview, and paroemias with somatic components allow to combine anthropocentrism with nationcentrism. The paper analyzes the research published during the last 5 years, which deals with various aspects of this issue and concludes that there is a lack of thorough research with a comprehensive consideration of somatic phraseological units, especially Ukrainian. The aim of the research is to reveal the meanings inherent to Ukrainian somatic paroemias, ways to reproduce the thinking and mentality of the Ukrainian people, to identify the place of paroemias with somatisms among the great variety of Ukrainian proverbs and sayings. The object of the study is 720 paroemias from the collection «The best proverbs and sayings of the Ukrainians», compiled by O. A. Popova. The paper contains a large number of examples and illustrative material. The description and analysis of paroemias with somatic components enable to determine what percentage of Ukrainian paroemias are somatic components and which of these elements are primary or secondary ones, and values they correspond to. The study presents figures and information illustrating and confirming the main aspects of the article. The analysis of a large number of paroemias with somatic components such as head, arm, eye, mouth, leg, heart, and ear showed that the most representative somatic components of Ukrainian paroemias are head, arms, and eyes. The authors conclude that Ukrainian paroemias with somatic components are an example of combining the universal in each culture with a specific ethnonational. The widespread use of somatisms in the Ukrainian paroemias is explained by the nature of human development of the world around us and by the principles of anthropocentrism and anthropomorphism of the world perception in human consciousness. Further study of the Ukrainian paroemias with somatic components will enrich our knowledge of the interaction of language and culture of the Ukrainians, will contribute to the further study of the world outlook of the Ukrainian nation.
