This article is the reflection of an emerging researcher who has experienced different nudges from the beginning of accessing the research field to the final stage of collating data in rural Nepal. My experiences and reflections may provide provocations to researchers to consider before they undertake field research. Areas that researchers should be aware of before entering the field include strategies of approaching the resources, socio-cultural and language diversities, topography and travel complication. The article offers those considering field research in remote areas, such as rural Nepal, an opportunity for rethinking a case study research approach, choosing appropriate methodological tools, sampling strategies and accessing resources.

This study aims to describe the model of character development of santri in Pesantren Persis 67 Benda Tasikmalaya West Java. Data collection method used in field research with the qualitative approach with observation data and in-depth interview. The results showed that: First, character development of santri lies in the process of teaching, habituation, and enforcement of rules. Secondly, the teaching model provides development not only in the curriculum that combines the curriculum content of the ministry of religions, the curriculum content of the ministries of education and culture, and the content of the local curriculum, but also contains principles that the teacher (ustadz) considers in curriculum development, namely: the proximity of the relationship between the learning material and the occurring phenomenon), the principle of flexibility (the developed curriculum must have the space for freedom of action, choosing the educational program, and the flexibility in the development of the learning program), the efficiency principle (effort, cost, time, which is used in the learning process must be strict), the principle of effectiveness (curriculum planning can be achieved in accordance with predetermined desires), the principle of continuity (curriculum development shows the relationship between education level, type of education, education program and field of study). Third, habituation is oriented to apply the value of independence and the value of responsibility. Fourth, enforcement of rules is implemented not to give physical sanctions, but rather more motivational.

This paper discusses the challenges of records management that arise from the use of adapted buildings as records centres in Zimbabwe, despite the advantages of using such buildings. A qualitative research approach was used as well as a case study research design. Data were collected from seven officers of the Gweru Records Centre through semi-structured interviews. Personal observation was used to triangulate findings from interviews. It was found that the use of adapted buildings as records centres was a cheaper and quicker way of establishing records centres throughout the country. However, a number of preservation, security and management challenges cropped up as the conditions of the buildings and the environment of the adapted buildings were not conducive to the proper and professional management of records. This study is important in that it explores the prospects and challenges of using adapted buildings as records centres in Zimbabwe, an area that has not been researched by many authors. This provokes archival authorities and the government to seriously consider establishing purpose-built records and archival centres.

Transportation industry at large is a major consumer of fossil fuels and contributes heavily to the global greenhouse gas emissions. A significant portion of these emissions come from freight transportation and decisions on mode/route may affect the overall scale of emissions from a specific movement. It is common to consider several alternatives for a new freight activity and compare the alternatives from economic perspective. However, there is a growing emphasis for adding emissions to this evaluation process. One of the approaches to do this is through Life Cycle Assessment (LCA); a method for estimating the emissions, energy consumption and environmental impacts of the project throughout its life cycle. Since modal/route selections are often investigated early in the planning stage of the project, availability of data and resources for analysis may become a challenge for completing a detailed LCA on alternatives. This research builds on such detailed LCA comparison performed on a previous case study by Kalluri et al. (2016), but it also investigates whether a simplified LCA process that only includes emissions from operations phase could be used as a less resource intensive option for the analysis while still providing relevant outcomes. The detailed LCA is performed using SimaPro software and simplified LCA is performed using GREET 2016 model. The results are obtained in terms of Kg CO2 equivalents of GHG emissions. This paper introduces both detailed and simplified methodologies and applies them to a case study of a nickel and copper mine in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. The analysis’ are done for three modal alternatives (two truck routes and one rail route) and for multiple mine lives.
