This study aimed to assess the effects of different levels of Trichanthera gigantea leaf meal (TGLM) supplementation on the growth performance of Philippine Native chickens fed commercial chicken grower ration. A total of 96 three-month old native chickens of two sexes were randomly distributed to the four treatments with 3 replicates and 4 chickens per replicate in a 2 x 4 factorial in Completely Randomized Design (CRD). Under semi-confinement system, the dietary treatments consisted of 0, 5, 10, and 15% levels of TGLM supplementation for 13 weeks. Results revealed that cumulative voluntary feed intake (VFI) increased as TGLM supplementation increased, and was significantly highest with 15% level at weeks 10, 11 and 12. Although differences were not significant except at weeks 4 and 7, there was a decreasing trend in cumulative weight gain (CWG) with increasing TGLM level. Average daily gain (ADG) was not significantly affected by varying levels of TGLM supplementation, and feed conversion efficiency (FCE) showed a decreasing trend as TGLM level increased and was only significantly low (p<0.01) with 15% level at week 7. Comparing between sexes, the males were significantly higher than females in all production performance parameters. Therefore, TGLM is palatable but not adequate enough to supply the nutrients needed for a comparable weight gain with that of 0% supplementation, and a 5 10% inclusion in the diet is recommended.

Background: Producing Thai native chickens through feed commercial is costly. To reduce the cost, native chicken could be fed with local plants or agricultural waste. Hyrrilla verticillate, a dominate macrophyte in Songkhla Lagoon, contain high crude protein and nitrogen free extract. Therefore, this research studied the use of Hydrilla verticillate in Thai native chicken diet on production performance, carcass characteristics and production cost. Methods: The experiment was executed in a completely randomized design (CRD) with 180 one-day-old commercial Thai native chicks. Four dietary treatments supplemented with 0%, 5%, 10% and 15% Hydrilla verticillata were formulated for three different phases of the experimental chickens: starter (1-4 weeks), grower (5-8 weeks) and finisher (9-12 weeks). Two chickens from each replicate were chosen for the carcass characteristics study. Result: During the starter phase, there was no notable effect shown among the chickens fed with the diet containing Hydrilla verticillata in terms of feed intake (FI) and body weight gain (BWG) (P greater than 0.05). The control chickens had best feed conversion ratio (FCR) (P less than 0.05), while the grower and the finisher periods, provided with different levels of Hydrilla verticillata, revealed no apparent differences (P greater than 0.05) concerning FI, BWG and FCR. Considering carcass characteristics, there were significant differences in live weight (LW) (P less than 0.05). But, no significant differences between treatments for hot carcass percentage, pectoralis majors, pectoralis minorstrip, thighs, wings, drumsticks and total edible carcass (P greater than 0.05). There were also statistical divergences regarding gizzard weight (GW) (P less than 0.05).

This study was carried out to evaluate the feeding effect of high yielding fodders (HYF) on feed intake and growth performance of growing Hilly Brown Bengal (HBB) goat. For this purpose, a feeding trail was conducted with 16 growing HBB kids (4 to 5 months) by dividing equally in four groups having four replicates for a period of 75 days. The goats in group T0 (control) received natural grass along with 101.30g concentrates and adlibitum cowpea hay, whereas in group T1, T2 and T3, only natural grass was replaced by BLRI Napier 3, BLRI Napier 4 and Ruzi fodder, respectively. Total dry matter intake (DMI), roughages DMI, crude protein intake (CP), body weight gain (kg), average daily gain (g) and forth night body weight gain (g/day) were studied. Results revealed that, DMI (288.39, 285.71, 293.48 and 301.35 g/day in group T0, T1, T2 and T3, respectively), body weight gain (3.60, 3.74, 3.73 and 3.77 kg in group T0, T1, T2 and T3, respectively), average daily gain (47.32, 49.16, 49.12 and 48.92 g in group T0, T1, T2 and T3, respectively) and feed conversion ratio (6.2, 5.9, 6.0 and 6.1 in group T0, T1, T2 and T3, respectively) of HBB kids were not differed significantly (P>0.05) for all the treatment groups. The DMI from roughages (196.2, 193.5, 201.3 and 209.2 g/day in group T0, T1, T2 and T3, respectively) and CP intake (38.7, 42.1, 48.3 and 38.8 g/day in group T0, T1, T2 and T3, respectively) were significantly varied (P<0.05), while highest CP intake was found in the treatment group T2. Forthnight body weight (g/day) was not significantly (P>0.05) gained with feeding of HYF for all the treatment groups. From this study, it can be concluded that, growing HBB kids could equally be supplied with either BLRI Napier 3 or BLRI Napier 4 or Ruzi fodder in addition to ad libitum cowpea hay for better voluntary feed intake and growth. The study aimed to evaluate growth performance of grower pigs fed fermented liquid potato hash with or without exogenous enzyme. Diets containing either 200 (LFLPH) g/kg potato hash (enzyme treated or not); 400 (HFLPH) g/kg potato hash (enzyme treated or not) or no fermented potato hash (control) were formulated to provide 14 MJ/kg digestible energy (DE), 180 g/kg crude protein (CP) and 11.6 g/kg lysine. Dietary treatments were control (no FLPH), enzyme treated LFPHE and HFLPHE, and untreated LFLPH and HFLPH. The exogenous enzyme was added in treated diets to provide minimum of 560-840 TXU/TDU xylanase per kg feed, at an inclusion rate of 100 g/tonne. Diets were mixed with water at 1:2 ration and fermented for 8 hours at 25 °C room temperature before being fed to pigs. Back-slopping fermentation approach was followed to prepare diets. Twelve pigs (25±2.3 kg) per diet that were individually housed were fed ad-lib for eight weeks. Pigs were allocated to diets in complete randomized design. Average daily gain (ADG), average daily feed intake (ADFI) and feed conversion ratio (FCR) were measured. The enzyme treated FLPH diets had higher (P < 0.05) CP, lower (P > 0.05) NDF and ADF concentrations compared to untreated FLPH diets. The LFPHE diet had higher (P < 0.001) final weight, ADG and lower (P < 0.001) ADFI and FCR compared to LFPH, HLFPH and HLFPHE. It was concluded that LFPHE diet may be an alternative feed source for growing pigs as indicated by higher gain and lower intake compared to LFLPH, HFLPH and HFLPHE.

Aim: This study is to evaluate the effects of using bread waste fortified with moringa leaf meal on broiler chickens. Methodology: Bread wastes were sun-dried and moringa leaves air-dried. The two dried products were milled separately. Thereafter, the meals were mixed in ratio 9:1 (9 kg Bread Waste + 1 kg Moringa Leaf) to produced fortified bread wastes. Four broiler starter diets and four finisher diets were formulated using fortified bread waste at graded levels of 0, 5, 10 and 15% and designated diets I, II, III and IV, respectively. Two hundred chicks were assigned to four dietary treatments of five replicates and ten chicks per replicate in a Completely Randomized Design. Diets and water were fed to the broilers ad libitum from 0 - 28 days as starter phase and 29 - 56 days as finisher phase. Results: Highest final weight gain and total weight gain (2.12 kg/bird and 2.07 kg/bird) and least feed conversion ratio (2.32) were observed in bird fed Diet I. The dressed weight, eviscerated weight, head, chest, drumstick, wing, thigh, back and shank were influenced significantly (P˂0.05) by the dietary treatments. Highest dressed weight (92.64%), eviscerated weight (79.52%), head (25.34 g/kg body weight), chest (206.53 g/kg body weight) and wing (83.10g/kg body weight) were recorded in bird fed Diet I. Only lymphocyte was influenced (P < .05) by the dietary treatments. Erythrocyte sedimentation rate varies: 2.33 - 3.33 mm/hour, packed cell volume: 26.67 - 28.67%, haemoglobin concentration: 9.23 - 9.88 g/100 ml and mean cell haemoglobin concentration: 34.41 - 34.61%. Cholesterol and alkaline phosphatase were influenced (P < 0.05) by the dietary treatments. The cholesterol: 22.57 - 32.78 mg/dl and alkaline phosphatase: 144.17-150.98 IU/I. Conclusion: From the results obtained in this study, it can be concluded that increasing levels of fortified bread wastes in broiler chicken diets up till 5% inclusion level can be practiced.

A total of 270 native chickens of two months of age were reared up to their six months of age under three densities D1, D2 and D3 (0.186, 0.279 and 0.372 m2/bird) and three flock sizes F1, F2 and F3 (20, 30 and 40 birds/flock) to find out the effect of density (D) and flock size (F) on the growth performance of native chicken under intensive system of management. Body weight gain and feed intake were higher (5.62 & 5.39 and 50.17 & 50.42) and feed conversion ratio and mortality were the lower (9.48 & 10.02) in D2 unit and (12.01 & 13.05) in F2 unit. On the other hand, body  weight gain was the lowest (4.81) in D3 unit. Feed intake was the lowest (49.25) in D1 unit with the highest (11.70) FCR value. Body weight gain was found to be the lowest (4.81) in F3 unit but its FCR and mortality rate were the  highest (11.25 and 17.71). Feed intake was observed to be the lowest (49.17) in the F1 unit. Considering the growth  performance of native chickens under different densities and flock sizes, it could be concluded that flock size F2 (30 birds/flock) performed better at the density level D2 (0.279 m2/bird) than other densities and other flock sizes.   DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.3329/jbau.v10i1.12040   J. Background: This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of dietary LJP supplementation on growth performance, heat stress resistance and immune status of weaned piglets raised in a high-temperature environment (34 ± 3°C).Methods: A total of 72 Barkshire × Licha Black crossbred piglets were weaned at 30 days of age (BW, 5.88 ± 0.16 kg) and fed either without or with 100, 200 or 400 mg/kg LJP in a completely randomized design, with 3 pens per diet (6 pigs per pen). On day 21, a total of 12 piglets were selected to collect blood samples.Result: The results showed that 200 and 400 mg/kg LJP supplementation decreased the feed conversion ratio (FCR) of piglets compared to the control group (P = 0.037) and dietary LJP linearly increased average daily gain and decreased FCR of piglets (P = 0.037 and 0.011, respectively). In addition, adding 100, 200 and 400 mg/kg LJP reduced the serum HSP70 content compared to the control group (P = 0.019) and dietary LJP linearly and quadratically decreased the serum HSP70 content of piglets (P = 0.030 and 0.011, respectively). Moreover, supplementation of 200 mg/kg and 400 mg/kg LJP increased the serum (NO) and nitric oxide acid phosphatase (ACP) content compared to the control group (P = 0.019; P = 0.003) and dietary LJP linearly increased the serum lysozyme, NO and ACP contents (P = 0.039; P = 0.005; P = 0.001). In conclusion, dietary LJP has potential to regulate systemic defence property of weaned piglets raised in a high temperature condition, accompanied by increased growth performance.

Abstract As an alternative to antibiotic growth promoters, live yeast supplementation has proven useful in reducing weaning stress and improving health and performance of piglets. The objective of the study was to evaluate the effect of a high concentrated live yeast product (20 billion CFU/g) supplemented in post-weaning piglet diets without antibiotics. A total of 144 pigs Pietrain × [LW×Landrace] (average initial BW = 8.55 ± 1.5 kg) weaned at 28 days of life were used for a 6-week growth study to determine post-weaning performance. Pigs were assigned to 2 treatments; 0 (Control group; CT) and 1 g of live yeast/kg (Yeast Supplemented group; YS) feed to 12 replicate pens of 6 pigs (3 barrows; 3 gilts). Average daily gain (ADG), feed intake (ADFI) and feed conversion ratio (FCR) were evaluated in pre-starter (days 0–14), starter (days 14–42) and in the whole nursery (days 0–42) periods. Data were analysed with ANOVA using PROC MIXED of SAS according to the completely randomized design. The model included initial BW as a covariant. Differences were deemed statistically significant when P ≤ 0.050 using a one tailed t-test. Live yeast supplementation improved ADG in starter (5.8%; P = 0.034) and in the whole nursery periods (7.0%; P = 0.045) compared with the CT group. Consequently, final BW was also higher in supplemented animals than in the CT (4.5%; P = 0.034). Differences in ADG were associated with differences in ADFI, higher in YS than in the CT group, both in starter (6.4%; P = 0.023) and in the whole nursery period (6.5%; P = 0.030). No differences were observed for FCR, mortality rate, and health incidences between dietary treatment groups. Therefore, supplementation of a live yeast to post-weaned piglets improved growth performance, confirming this product as an alternative to reduce antibiotic usage in nursery piglets.

A study was conducted to evaluate the effects of Aloe vera extract and Acid cheese whey on the growth and productivity of quails. A total of 300 quails distributed to 5 treatments with four replications using Complete Randomized Design (CRD). This was a four-month study starting from growing to laying period of quails. Treatment Levels were; T1= 0mL AVE and ACW, T2=15mL AVE, T3=25mL AVE, T4=15mL ACW, and T5=25mL ACW per gallon of water. Results revealed no significant differences on final weight, gain weight, feed consumption, and water consumption except on feed conversion ratio which is significantly different among treatments. Numerically, birds with AVE and ACW supplementation showed higher performance on the parameters studied. Results suggests that Aloe vera extract and Acid Cheese Whey can be used to increase growth and egg production performance in quails. In order to ensure sustainable pig production in most tropical countries, alternative flooring systems need to be investigated and adopted. This five-week experiment was carried out to investigate the growth performance and skin lesion score of 36 weaned pigs raised on different heights of Guinea Grass Straw (GGS) beddings. The pigs were separated into four treatments in triplicate, in a completely randomized design. The treatments were: T1: 0m (concrete floor: without GGS), T2: 0.1m GGS, T3: 0.2m GGS and T4: 0.3m GGS. At the end of the experiment, data were collected on growth performance: final weight, weight gain, feed intake while feed conversion ratio (FCR) was calculated and skin lesions (front, middle and rear) measured. All data obtained were subjected to analysis of variance (ANOVA). Pigs on 0.2m had the highest (p<0.05) weight gain (4.75kg) compared with its counterparts on 0.1m (4.28kg), 0.3m (3.94kg) and T1(3.34kg). Final weight followed similar trend with pigs in 0.2m (9.94kg) having the highest weight compared with 0.1m (9.40kg), 0.3m (9.22kg) and T1 (8.55kg). The highest FCR (4.72) was recorded for pigs on 0m (control) which was an indication of poor feed utilisation while the least was with pigs on 0.2m (3.39). The result for skin lesion for the different parts revealed the least lesion occurred in pigs on 0.3m and higher occurrence in pigs on T1. Generally, skin lesions occur most at the front legs and heads. It can be concluded that the use of guinea grass straw at 0.1m and 0.2m height can improve the performance of weaned piglets while a height of 0.3m results in reduced skin lesions score.   Afin d'assurer une production porcine durable dans la plupart des pays tropicaux, des systèmes de revêtement de sol alternatifs doivent être étudiés et adoptés. Cette expérience de cinq semaines a été réalisée pour étudier les performances de croissance et le taux de lésion cutanée de 36 porcs sevrés élevés sur différentes hauteurs de litières de paille de guinée (le 'GGS'- paille d'herbe de Guinée). Les porcs ont été séparés en quatre traitements en triple, dans une conception complètement aléatoire. Les traitements étaient: T1: 0 m (sol en béton: sans GGS), T2: 0,1 m'GGS', T3: 0,2 m'GGS' et T4: 0,3 m'GGS'. À la fin de l'expérience, des données ont été recueillies sur les performances de croissance: poids final, gain de poids, prise alimentaire tandis que le ratio de conversion alimentaire (FCR) a été calculé et les lésions cutanées (avant, milieu et arrière) mesurées. Toutes les données obtenues ont été soumises à une analyse de variance (ANOVA). Les porcs sur 0,2 m avaient le gain de poids le plus élevé (p <0,05) (4,75 kg) par rapport à leurs homologues de 0,1 m (4,28 kg), 0,3 m (3,94 kg) et T1 (3,34 kg). Le poids final a suivi une tendance similaire avec les porcs de 0,2 m (9,94 kg) ayant le poids le plus élevé par rapport à 0,1 m (9,40 kg), 0,3 m (9,22 kg) et T1 (8,55 kg). Le FCR le plus élevé (4,72) a été enregistré pour les porcs à 0 m (témoin), ce qui était une indication d'une mauvaise utilisation des aliments, tandis que le moins était pour les porcs à 0,2 m (3,39). Le résultat de la lésion cutanée pour les différentes parties a révélé que la moindre lésion était survenue chez les porcs à 0,3 m et plus chez les porcs en T1. En général, les lésions cutanées surviennent le plus au niveau des pattes avant et de la tête. On peut en conclure que l'utilisation de paille d'herbe de Guinée à 0,1 m et 0,2 m de hauteur peut améliorer les performances des porcelets sevrés tandis qu'une hauteur de 0,3 m entraîne une réduction du score des lésions cutanées.

The objective of the present study was to determine the effect of dietary supplementation of neem oil (Azadirachtaindica) on the growth performance and nutrient digestibility of weaned rabbits. A total of 50 weaned male cross bred rabbits between 5-6 weeks with an average weight of 565.4g-566.8gwere divided into five dietary groups of ten (10) weaned rabbits each in a completely randomized design. The dietary treatments include a control, T1 (basal) diet with no neem oil (NOL), T2, T3, T4 and T5 were fed basal diet supplemented with NOL at 0.1%, 0.2%, 0.3% and 0.4% respectively. Feed and water were offered ad libitum throughout the experiment which lasted for 12 weeks. The data obtained was used to evaluate the growth performance: weight gain (WG), feed intake (FI), feed conversion ratio (FCR), mortality and nutrient digestibility (dry matter, crude protein, crude fibre and ether extract). WG, ADFI, TFI were significantly (P˂0.05) different among the treatments. T5 had the highest weight gain (755.90 g) followed by T4(734.0g), T3(705.90g), T2(705.0g) and T1(621.80g) respectively. Highest mortality was recorded in T1 (2%) followed by T2 (1%), none was recorded in T3, T4 and T5. Neem oil significantly influenced (P˂0.05) all the parameters measured. It could be concluded thatneem oil contains some essential nutrients and bioactive chemicals and could be supplemented in the diet of rabbit at 0.4 % without any deleterious effect on the general performance of the animal.
