Kemukjizatan al-Qur’an atau I’jāz al-Qur’an merupakan satu bentuk ilmu yang menjelaskan tentang keagongan al-Qur’an dalam pelbagai bentuk disiplin ilmu. The Miracle of the Qur’an or I’jāz al-Qur’an is a form of knowledge that explains the greatness of the Qur’an in various forms of disciplines. One of the major discussion involves the use of language styles that include grammar, balāghah and linguistics. This study aims to examine the development of I’jaz Bayāniy in the study of the Qur’an based on the research of previous scholars. The approach through qualitative analysis from the past scholars is seen as one of the main methodologies of this study. The results of the study found that the use of the term I’jaz Bayāniy is not only focused on the bayān only, but also covers the ma’ani and badi ’.

It seems to me that the study of writing is about where the study of language was before the development of linguistics over the past century-and-a-bit. Everyone we know knows how to write, and therefore everyone we know thinks they know about writing. This paper looks at how writing has been presented to the general public, and how it has been treated in linguistics since the first real textbook of 1933.

ABSTRACT In the past decade or so, populism and social media have been outstanding issues both in academia and the public sphere. At this point, evidence from multiple countries suggest that perceived parallels between the dynamics of social media and the mechanics of populist discourse may be more than just incidental, relating to a shared structural field. This article suggests one possible path towards making sense of how the dynamics of social media and the mechanics of populist mobilization have co-produced each other in the last decade or so. Navigating the interface between anthropology and linguistics, it takes key aspects of Victor Turner’s notion of liminality to suggest some of the ways in which social media’s anti-structural affordances may help lay a foundation for the contemporary flourishing of populist discourse: markers of social structure are suspended; communitas is formed; the culture core is addressed; mimesis and anti-structural inversions are performed; subjects become influenceable. I elaborate on this claim based on Brazilian materials, drawn from online ethnography on pro-Bolsonaro WhatsApp groups and other platforms such as Twitter and Facebook since 2018.

Since Romaine's (1982) pioneering work, historical sociolinguistics has been studying the relationships between language and society in its socio-historical context by focusing on the study of language variation and change with the use of variationist methods. Work on this interdisciplinary sub-field subsisting on sociology, history and linguistics is expanding, as shown, for example, by Milroy (1992), Nevalainen & Raumolin-Brunberg (1996; 2003), Ammon, Mattheier & Nelde (1999), Jahr (1999), Kastovsky & Mettinger (2000), Bergs (2005), Conde-Silvestre (2007), Trudgill (2010), or Hernández-Campoy & Conde-Silvestre (2012). These works have been elucidating the theoretical limits of the discipline and applying the tenets and findings of contemporary sociolinguistic research to the interpretation of linguistic material from the past. Yet in the course of this development historical sociolinguistics has sometimes been criticised for lack of representativeness and its empirical validity has occasionally been questioned. Fortunately, in parallel to the development of electronic corpora, the assistance of corpus linguistics and social history has conferred ‘empirical’ ease and ‘historical’ confidence on the discipline.

A qualitative study of courtship, dating and drinking was under-taken with young adults in Toronto, Canada, in the summer of 1994. Those interviewed were between the ages of 18 and 34, heterosexual, had no children, occasionally drank alcohol, and had dated someone new at least once in the past year. This paper reports on one aspect of the analysis of the data from the 40 people (19 men and 21 women) interviewed. This study suggests that aggression is one response to conflicting views of a dating situation. The men and women interviewed had expectations for appropriate behavior when meeting potential mates and on initial dates, and in most cases those expectations were the same. However, where expectations differed, the men attempted to impose their framing of the situation, and the women generally resisted, attempting to limit the risk associated with this framing of the situation. The men and women interviewed used tactics such as persuasion, manipulation or even aggression to attempt to resolve this conflict, and to impose their own situational definitions.

The article is devoted to the consideration of extraterritorial publications on the Chuvash theme. The purpose of the work is to identify the essential features of the foreign layer of the Chuvash book. The conclusions of the work are based on a quantitative and qualitative analysis of bibliographic indexes and a direct study of the books themselves de visu. The authors of the article consider foreign books as an important component of modern Chuvash culture, endowed with communicative, cognitive-cumulative, ethno-presentative and educational functions. Extraterritorial editions of the Chuvash book appeared in the first half of the 19th century, and only by the end of the 20th century they formed an independent layer. At the same time, one should objectively speak of two exteriorics – the Chuvash and by the poet G. Aygi. Each of them is represented by almost 150 publications. The predominant problematic of the foreign language layer of the Chuvash book proper is the Chuvash language. Moreover, its notable aspect is the publication of books in the Chuvash language or their publication with parallel texts in Sweden and Turkey. G. Aygi’s foreign publications are already represented by collections of poems in Russian, published by the publishing house of the artist N. Dronnikov in France. This work is a publication that should provide an introduction to the scientific use of literature that has not yet become the property of the Chuvash Studies. Its task is to promote the full functioning of modern Chuvash science in conjunction with the world one. The authors come to the conclusion that, in general, the foreign layer of the Chuvash book has an enduring value, and many of the scientific publications published in the past are rightly elevated to the rank of classical ones by the scientists.

The object of the article is article headlines of the internet news portal Delfi.lt: factual statements containing the mentioning of a person by their name, surname or pseudonym. A headline is perceived as a complex representative unit, where a complex means, namely, employing accompanying notes and illustrations, and is used to achieve its main functions: to inform and affect. The aim of the article is to identify the effect of factual statements employed in headlines, which the statements have on the person mentioned and how they serve in drawing the readers’ attention. The material for the analysis was collected from the internet news portal Delfi.lt. A total of 191 headlines including the illustrations were looked into. The analysis comprised not only the evaluation of the headlines but also the articles in their entirety, including illustrations and commentaries. The qualitative analysis of headlines as factual statements was carried out in three aspects: description of a person, naming the action performed by the person, and the relationship of the person and the illustration. The research revealed that the headlines of the internet news portal Delfi.lt often employ a person as a means of drawing the readers’ attention as well as illustrations as a means of conveying visual information complementing the headlines. It turned out that in the headlines taking the form of a factual statement, the readers’ attention is mostly drawn by the information of negative nature where the accompanying expressive illustrations present well- known persons, mainly Lithuanian politicians, businessmen, and sportsmen. Descriptions of a person exert no influence on the popularity of the article in cases where people well known to society are referred to but are of particular importance when dealing with much less known people. Expressions in the past simple tense are attractive to the readers since the expressions provide a possibility, based on the facts presented, to design potential consequences on one’s own. Expressive headlines with accompanying expressive illustrations, where the presented scene does not only specify the idea of the headline but also complements it with intriguing meanings, enjoy the highest popularity. Therefore, headlines and illustrations kindle the readers’ emotions and encourage them to interpret their own meanings.
