Vector calculus courses are active abstract subjects that students often have difficulty in understanding the material. The research method uses quantitative descriptive methods. In this study, the subjects were students of the Mathematics Education Study Program at Suryakancana University in the 7th semester of the 2017-2018 academic year in the subject of Vector Calculus. The data collection technique is done by using a question test instrument about Polya's comprehension ability. Based on the results of the conclusion analysis from Problem 3, it was seen that most students understood 85% of the presentations and for question number 5 was 67%. Problems no. 1a and 1b inductive ability seen that most students understood 82% and 85% inductive understanding abilities. Another thing understood by student number 2 shows that most students understand most with 70% presentation and for number 4 most students do not understand 48% presentation. Question number 6 shows that most students understand 88% and for number 7 most students understand 70%. From the overall indicators of Polya's ability from the results of the answers, the presuppositions of students' abilities in vector calculus courses are mostly in the category of not understanding and partial understanding. Students are still weak in finding the truth or proof of a certain formula of curvature.

In learning Japanese, understanding Japanese text is included in the Dokkai course. Dokkai is one of the compulsory courses that students of the Japanese language education study program, Padang State University, have to take for approximately 3 years or 6 semesters. The Japanese text does not use romaji letters, but uses 3 different types of letters, namely hiragana, katakana and kanji which make Japanese text difficult to understand. The large number of Japanese language education study program students in 2018 experienced difficulties in understanding Japanese language texts. The purpose of this study is to describe the difficulties of students in understanding Japanese text. This research is a quantitative descriptive study. The sample used in the study was 39 students. The data collection technique in this study used a questionnaire and used a Likert scale formula. While the data analysis technique is descriptive with a percentage. The results of this study found the difficulties experienced by students, among others, the sub-indicator of kanji with a percentage of 74.35%. In the linguistic indicator, students have difficulty with the vocabulary sub-indicator with a percentage of 63.7%, sentence patterns with a percentage of 64% and meaning with a percentage of 61.7%. Abstract. Calculus is a branch of science from Mathematics that is needed for the development of science so that it is important for students who take mathematics study programs. This study aims to analyze the ability of students' mathematical understanding of calculus courses based on Apos theory. The subjects of this study were 30 regular 5th semester students in class A Mathematics Education Study Program 2018/2019 academic year at one of Universities in East Jakarta. Data is collected through tests, interviews and observation. Based on the results of the study, it was concluded that the analysis of the ability of students' mathematical understanding in calculus subjects based on Apos theory is as follows: (1) The achievement of students' mathematical understanding ability in calculus courses based on Apos theory is still not optimal, especially in the indicator of 'functional understanding'. (2) There are 5 students who get a value of less than 50, There are 6 students who score between 50 and 60, There are 5 students who get grades between 61 and 70, There are 8 students who score between 71 and 80 and There are 6 students who score between 81 and 100. (3) The average test of mathematical comprehension ability overall was 68.3 and the perfect score was achieved by 2 students. Keywords: Mathematical Understanding Ability, Calculus, Apos Theory

This research was using descriptive quantitative as the methodology and the data was collected by using questionnaire as the instrument. The questionnaire consisted of 35 items which represent the use of listening comprehension strategies from cognitive, metacognitive, and socio-affective strategies. This research uses Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 22 to analyze the data. Oxford’s (1990) rating scheme for strategy use was used to determine the category of listening comprehension strategies use. The result of data analysis shows that students use cognitive, metacognitive, and socio-affective strategies in listening comprehension. Cognitive strategy was used as the most highly use of strategies in listening comprehension with the mean score 3.54 (high), followed by socio-affective strategy with the mean score 3.43 (moderate) and metacognitive strategy with the mean score 3.4 (moderate). From the results, it is concluded that students are using strategies mostly when doing a listening task at the classroom, by using the lexical and grammatical competences also background knowledge to understand the listening materials.
