Though it is long known that irregular intake of antihypertensive may cause harm, but still there is much lack of awareness among the patients in this matter. This case controlled study was done in Dhaka Medical College Hospital, Dhaka, to determine the relationship between discontinuation of antihypertensive drugs and the risk of stroke among hypertensive patients. Number of cases was 72. Control group was selected via random sampling of stroke free treated hypertensive group, similar in age to stroke cases. Sampling technique was random systematic sampling. The relationship was determined employing statistical methods including Chi-square (?2) test using computer programs, and significant association between discontinuation of antihypertensive and development of stroke in hypertensive adult patients was found ?2(1,N= 103) = 32.637, p<0.001. Odd’s ratio is 15.83. DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.3329/jdmc.v22i2.21530 J Dhaka Medical College, Vol. 22, No.2, October, 2013, Page 173-178

The incidences of pneumonia in infants Become the second highest cause mortality before reaching the age of 5 years and a health problem in Indonesia. The family of smoking and smoke from burning mosquito coils are the triggers for air pollution, which can lead to pneumonia in infants. The study aims to analyze the relationship between family smoking habits and the use of mosquito coils with the incidence of pneumonia in under-fives. The method of research applied analytic observational research using a case-control study approach. The number of samples in this study was 87 under-fives in the case group and 87 under-fives in the control group. Sampling was conducted by non-probability sampling. A questionnaire was used as a data collecting instrument. Data analysis used chi-square and multiple logistic regression. The results of this study Showed that there was a relationship between family smoking habits and the use of mosquito coils with the incidence of pneumonia in infants. In addition, there were other variables that had a relationship with the incidence of pneumonia in under-fives namely smoking location (OR = 3,046; 95% CI: 1429-6492, p = 0.003), the number of cigarettes (OR = 7.105 ; 95% CI: 3079-16394, p = 0.000), and length of time with smokers (p = 0.000). On the other hand, the variables of father smoker status and the frequency of using mosquito coils were not related to the incidence of pneumonia in under-fives (p value 0.05). It is concluded that family smoking habits, use of mosquito coils, the location of smoking, and number of cigarettes, and  length of time together with smokers were risk factors associated with the incidence of pneumonia in toddlers

Background: The COVID-19 pandemic has caused devastating diseases worldwide both in children and adults. Subsequently, a serious and novel pediatric condition called children's multisystem inflammatory syndrome (MIS-C) has emerged and it is important to understand the temporal association between MIS-C and COVID-19. In hyper inflammation syndrome following COVID-19, MIS-C, and multi-organ involvement were documented in the pediatric population. The main goal of this study was to assess the relation of the MIS-C with COVID-19.Methods: This single-center case-control study was conducted at Dhaka medical college hospital (DMCH), Dhaka, Bangladesh. Among 1715 studied population, 227 COVID-19 positive pediatric patients were included in this study. Among them 103 had features of MIS-C in the case group and 124 were in the control group without MIS-C.Results: There were 6% MIS-C patients with COVID-19. The prevalence of male patients was observed in this study. The mean age of the patient group with MIS-C was 7.8±3.12 years. The frequencies of fever 93.3 vs 67.7%, p=0.045; conjunctivitis 75.6% vs 53.2%, p=0.039; rash 47.3% vs 16.1%; arterial hypotension 71.3 vs 12.9%, p=0.058 hypoxemia 80.4% vs 57.2%, p=0.049 and other features were significantly higher in MIS-C patients than the patients without MIS-C. More patients with MIS-C had cardiac abnormalities in our study. Conclusions: MIS-C is an emerging clinical entity and this study was focused on the cases of MIS-C in the pediatric population withCOVID-19. In patients with atypical clinical findings and complaints about COVID-19, MIS-C-like illnesses should be considered.

The purpose of this paper is to test the relationship between HRM practices and employee’s retention. To test this relationship, data was collected from faculty members of Khyber medical college (KMC), using a convenience sampling technique. A Chi-square test was used to evaluate the aforementioned relationship. The effect of three HRM practices (reward, selection, and training) on employees’ retention were studied. The results reflect that reward and compensation is not associated with retention factors, while selection and retention are associated with each other. Similarly, training also has a significant association with employee’s retention. Results help us to conclude that KMC needs to consider reward and compensation, while selection and training should be further strengthened to enhance employee’s retention. Keywords: Retention, Turnover, HRM practices, Selection, Training, Reward.

The survival of <em>Aedes aegypti</em> larvae is inseparable from the adequacy of food, including organic substances available in the breeding water. It is very dependent on the level of water markers such as temperature, salinity, Dissolved Oxygen, and pH. The study used quantitative observational analytic with a case-control study design. Case group has consisted of breeding water in endemic area and control group was in non-endemic area. The sample size was 43 samples for each group, collected by purposive sampling technique. Data were analyzed by Chi-square and Mann-Whitney test. Larvae mostly presence in endemic area (68.3%) and mostly absent in non-endemic area (85.4%) (<em>p</em>-value = 0.002). Temperature in endemic area mostly in 27-30oC (86%) and non-endemic area mostly in &lt;27oC or &gt;30oC (72.1%) (<em>p</em>-value = 0.000). Salinity in endemic and non-endemic areas has no difference (<em>p</em>-value = 0.266). DO in endemic areas were mostly in 5.02-7.82 mg/l (76.7%). While DO in non-endemic area was mostly in &lt;5.02 mg/l or &gt;7.82 mg/l (95.3%) (<em>p</em>-value = 0.001). The pH &lt;6 or &gt;7.8 is mostly in non-endemic areas (87.8%) and pH 6-7.8 is mostly in endemic areas (63.4%) (<em>p</em>-value = 0.000). Bio-physicochemical markers of breeding sites water have differences between endemic and non-endemic area except salinity. The temperature, salinity, DO, and pH affected the presence of larvae and the most affected is DO marker. While the marker that affected the presence of larvae in the non-endemic area is pH.

Eclampsia, a life threatening complication of pregnancy. It is one of the important cause of  maternal mortality of Bangladesh. Eclamptic seizure can effectively controlled by use of  magnesium sulphate. A prospective randomized case control study was conducted at eclampsia ward of Dhaka Medical College Hospital for one year from June 2007 to May 2008.Objective: To find out whether only 8gm of magnesium sulphate heptahydrate (Nalepsin) as a  single loading dose is sufficient to control eclamptic convulsion and also to compare the efficacy between 8gm & 10gm of MgSo4 used to control convulsion.Methodology: A random selection was done by lottery of those antepartum and intrapartum  cases who fulfill the selection criteria. Hundred patient were selected and grouped them into  case & control. 8gm Nalepsion (Magnesium sulphate heptahydrate) as a single I.V dose was  selected for case and 10gm MgSo4 (4gm I.V + 3gm I.M in each buttock) was for control  group. Different variables were compaired and results were analyzed by unpaired ‘t’ test and chi-square test (X2) by SPSS programme. Result: Statistically there was no significant difference of any finding between two groups after comparing all variables individually. Conclusion: 8gm Nalepsin intravenously as a single loading dose is sufficient to control  eclamptic convulsion and prevention of its recurrence.DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.3329/bjog.v25i2.13743 Bangladesh J Obstet Gynaecol, 2010; Vol. 25(2) : 71-76
