Purpose: To develop a method for individual parameter estimation of four hydraulic-analogy bioenergetic models and to assess the validity and reliability of these models’ prediction of aerobic and anaerobic metabolic utilization during sprint roller-skiing.Methods: Eleven elite cross-country skiers performed two treadmill roller-skiing time trials on a course consisting of three flat sections interspersed by two uphill sections. Aerobic and anaerobic metabolic rate contributions, external power output, and gross efficiency were determined. Two versions each (fixed or free maximal aerobic metabolic rate) of a two-tank hydraulic-analogy bioenergetic model (2TM-fixed and 2TM-free) and a more complex three-tank model (3TM-fixed and 3TM-free) were programmed into MATLAB. The aerobic metabolic rate (MRae) and the accumulated anaerobic energy expenditure (Ean,acc) from the first time trial (STT1) together with a gray-box model in MATLAB, were used to estimate the bioenergetic model parameters. Validity was assessed by simulation of each bioenergetic model using the estimated parameters from STT1 and the total metabolic rate (MRtot) in the second time trial (STT2).Results: The validity and reliability of the parameter estimation method based on STT1 revealed valid and reliable overall results for all the four models vs. measurement data with the 2TM-free model being the most valid. Mean differences in model-vs.-measured MRae ranged between -0.005 and 0.016 kW with typical errors between 0.002 and 0.009 kW. Mean differences in Ean,acc at STT termination ranged between −4.3 and 0.5 kJ and typical errors were between 0.6 and 2.1 kJ. The root mean square error (RMSE) for 2TM-free on the instantaneous STT1 data was 0.05 kW for MRae and 0.61 kJ for Ean,acc, which was lower than the other three models (all P < 0.05). Compared to the results in STT1, the validity and reliability of each individually adapted bioenergetic model was worse during STT2 with models underpredicting MRae and overpredicting Ean,acc vs. measurement data (all P < 0.05). Moreover, the 2TM-free had the lowest RMSEs during STT2.Conclusion: The 2TM-free provided the highest validity and reliability in MRae and Ean,acc for both the parameter estimation in STT1 and the model validity and reliability evaluation in the succeeding STT2.

<p> Uncertainties usually exist in the process of acquisition of measurement data, which affect the results of the parameter estimation. The solution of the uncertainty adjustment model can effectively improve the validity and reliability of parameter estimation. When the coefficient matrix of the observation equation has a singular value close to zero, i.e., the coefficient matrix is ill-posed, the ridge estimation can effectively suppress the influence of the ill-posed problem of the observation equation on the parameter estimation. When the uncertainty adjustment model is ill-posed, it is more seriously affected by the error of the coefficient matrix and observation vector. In this paper, the ridge estimation method is applied to ill-posed uncertainty adjustment model, deriving an iterative algorithm to improve the stability and reliability of the results. The derived algorithm is verified by two examples, and the results show that the new method is effective and feasible.</p>

Estimation of feedwater heater parameters based on a grey-box approachThe first-principle modeling of a feedwater heater operating in a coal-fired power unit is presented, along with a theoretical discussion concerning its structural simplifications, parameter estimation, and dynamical validation. The model is a part of the component library of modeling environments, called the Virtual Power Plant (VPP). The main purpose of the VPP is simulation of power generation installations intended for early warning diagnostic applications. The model was developed in the Matlab/Simulink package. There are two common problems associated with the modeling of dynamic systems. If an analytical model is chosen, it is very costly to determine all model parameters and that often prevents this approach from being used. If a data model is chosen, one does not have a clear interpretation of the model parameters. The paper uses the so-called grey-box approach, which combines first-principle and data-driven models. The model is represented by nonlinear state-space equations with geometrical and physical parameters deduced from the available documentation of a feedwater heater, as well as adjustable phenomenological parameters (i.e., heat transfer coefficients) that are estimated from measurement data. The paper presents the background of the method, its implementation in the Matlab/Simulink environment, the results of parameter estimation, and a discussion concerning the accuracy of the method.

In this contribution, measurement data of phase, neutral, and ground currents from real low voltage (LV) feeders in Germany is presented and analyzed. The data obtained is used to review and evaluate common modeling approaches for LV systems. An alternative modeling approach for detailed cable and ground modeling, which allows for the consideration of typical German LV earthing conditions and asymmetrical cable design, is proposed. Further, analytical calculation methods for model parameters are described and compared to laboratory measurement results of real LV cables. The models are then evaluated in terms of parameter sensitivity and parameter relevance, focusing on the influence of conventionally performed simplifications, such as neglecting house junction cables, shunt admittances, or temperature dependencies. By comparing measurement data from a real LV feeder to simulation results, the proposed modeling approach is validated.

A mechanistic kinetic model of cobalt–hydrogen electrochemical competition for the cobalt removal process in zinc hydrometallurgical was proposed. In addition, to overcome the parameter estimation difficulties arising from the model nonlinearities and the lack of information on the possible value ranges of parameters to be estimated, a constrained guided parameter estimation scheme was derived based on model equations and experimental data. The proposed model and the parameter estimation scheme have two advantages: (i) The model reflected for the first time the mechanism of the electrochemical competition between cobalt and hydrogen ions in the process of cobalt removal in zinc hydrometallurgy; (ii) The proposed constrained parameter estimation scheme did not depend on the information of the possible value ranges of parameters to be estimated; (iii) the constraint conditions provided in that scheme directly linked the experimental phenomenon metrics to the model parameters thereby providing deeper insights into the model parameters for model users. Numerical experiments showed that the proposed constrained parameter estimation algorithm significantly improved the estimation efficiency. Meanwhile, the proposed cobalt–hydrogen electrochemical competition model allowed for accurate simulation of the impact of hydrogen ions on cobalt removal rate as well as simulation of the trend of hydrogen ion concentration, which would be helpful for the actual cobalt removal process in zinc hydrometallurgy.

AbstractThe paper presents a method for determining electromagnetic parameters of different synchronous generator models based on dynamic waveforms measured at power rejection. Such a test can be performed safely under normal operating conditions of a generator working in a power plant. A generator model was investigated, expressed by reactances and time constants of steady, transient, and subtransient state in the d and q axes, as well as the circuit models (type (3,3) and (2,2)) expressed by resistances and inductances of stator, excitation, and equivalent rotor damping circuits windings. All these models approximately take into account the influence of magnetic core saturation. The least squares method was used for parameter estimation. There was minimized the objective function defined as the mean square error between the measured waveforms and the waveforms calculated based on the mathematical models. A method of determining the initial values of those state variables which also depend on the searched parameters is presented. To minimize the objective function, a gradient optimization algorithm finding local minima for a selected starting point was used. To get closer to the global minimum, calculations were repeated many times, taking into account the inequality constraints for the searched parameters. The paper presents the parameter estimation results and a comparison of the waveforms measured and calculated based on the final parameters for 200 MW and 50 MW turbogenerators.

Parameter estimation is an important topic in the field of system identification. This paper explores the role of a new information theory measure of data dependency in parameter estimation problems. Causation entropy is a recently proposed information-theoretic measure of influence between components of multivariate time series data. Because causation entropy measures the influence of one dataset upon another, it is naturally related to the parameters of a dynamical system. In this paper, it is shown that by numerically estimating causation entropy from the outputs of a dynamic system, it is possible to uncover the internal parametric structure of the system and thus establish the relative magnitude of system parameters. In the simple case of linear systems subject to Gaussian uncertainty, it is first shown that causation entropy can be represented in closed form as the logarithm of a rational function of system parameters. For more general systems, a causation entropy estimator is proposed, which allows causation entropy to be numerically estimated from measurement data. Results are provided for discrete linear and nonlinear systems, thus showing that numerical estimates of causation entropy can be used to identify the dependencies between system states directly from output data. Causation entropy estimates can therefore be used to inform parameter estimation by reducing the size of the parameter set or to generate a more accurate initial guess for subsequent parameter optimization.

Online prediction of dynamical system behavior based on a combination of simulation data and sensor measurement data has numerous applications. Examples include predicting safe flight configurations, forecasting storms and wildfire spread, estimating railway track and pipeline health conditions. In such applications, high-fidelity simulations may be used to accurately predict a system’s dynamical behavior offline (“non-real time”). However, due to the computational expense, these simulations have limited usage for online (“real-time”) prediction of a system’s behavior. To remedy this, one possible approach is to allocate a significant portion of the computational effort to obtain data through offline simulations. The obtained offline data can then be combined with online sensor measurements for online estimation of the system’s behavior with comparable accuracy as the off-line, high-fidelity simulation. The main contribution of this paper is in the construction of a fast data-driven spatiotemporal prediction framework that can be used to estimate general parametric dynamical system behavior. This is achieved through three steps. First, high-order singular value decomposition is applied to map high-dimensional offline simulation datasets into a subspace. Second, Gaussian processes are constructed to approximate model parameters in the subspace. Finally, reduced-order particle filtering is used to assimilate sparsely located sensor data to further improve the prediction. The effectiveness of the proposed approach is demonstrated through a case study. In this case study, aeroelastic response data obtained for an aircraft through simulations is integrated with measurement data obtained from a few sparsely located sensors. Through this case study, the authors show that along with dynamic enhancement of the state estimates, one can also realize a reduction in uncertainty of the estimates.

Stochastic processes are employed in this paper to capture the evolution of daily mean temperatures, with the goal of pricing temperature-based weather options. A stochastic harmonic oscillator model is proposed for the temperature dynamics and results of numerical simulations and parameter estimation are presented. The temperature model is used to price a one-month call option and a sensitivity analysis is undertaken to examine how call option prices are affected when the model parameters are varied.

For the dynamic calibration of torque transducers, a model of the transducer and an extended model of the mounted transducer including the measuring device have been developed. The dynamic behaviour of a torque transducer under test is going to be described by its model parameters. This paper describes the models with these known and unknown parameters and how the calibration measurements are going to be carried out. The principle for the identification of the transducer's model parameters from measurement data is described using a least squares approach. The influence of a variation of the transducer's parameters on the frequency response of the expanded model is analysed.
