Urbanization is accelerating due to economic and societal development. The accurate identification of urban functional zones is significant for urban structure optimization, urban planning, and resource allocation. This paper reviews the scholarly literature on urban functional zone identification. Based on the retrieval results of databases, we analyzed the overview and current status. The identification methods and classification schemes are summarized from the existing research. The following results were obtained: (1) point of interest (POI) data are widely used for functional zone identification; (2) the block is the most common unit for functional zone identification; (3) cluster analysis is the main approach for urban functional zone identification; (4) most of the classification schemes are based on the dominant land use and characteristics of data sources. We predict future trends of urban functional zone identification based on the reviewed literature. Our findings are expected to be valuable for urban studies.

Abstract. Fast-changing cities need efficient management. Accurate classification of urban functional zone (UFZ) can provide important reference for cities management. Remote sensing imagery (RSI) is large scale, high resolution and fast update, which can provide massive data for UFZ extraction. However, UFZ are more concerned with social attributes such as industrial production and commercial activities, while images can only provide visual features, which is not enough for an elaborate UFZ classification. To solve this problem, in this paper, we combine RSI and point of interest (POI) data together for UFZ classification, and propose a Social Information Fused Urban Functional Zones Classification Network (SIF-Net). For RSI, we simply use a Xception CNNs network extract the visual information. For POI data, we first build a coarse heatmap for each type of POI (e.g. retail, apartment…), and then combine them as a POI tensor. Afterward, we use a channel attention module (CAM) based CNN model to fuse heatmaps from each type of POI, and then build a fine distribution of UFZ as the social information. Finally, we fuse the visual information extracted from RSI and social information extracted from POI by concatenating them. By fusing this two complementary information, our method makes up for the shortcomings of extracting UFZ based on RSI and general CNNs only. Compared with current state-of-the-art methods, experiments show that the proposed SIF-Net can significantly improve the UFZ classification result.

Staphylococcal cassette chromosome mec (SCCmec) typing was established in the 2000s and has been employed as a tool for the molecular epidemiology of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, as well as the evolution investigation of Staphylococcus species. Molecular cloning and the conventional sequencing of SCCmec have been adopted to verify the presence and structure of a novel SCCmec type, while convenient PCR-based SCCmec identification methods have been used in practical settings for many years. In addition, whole-genome sequencing has been widely used, and various SCCmec and similar structures have been recently identified in various species. The current status of the SCCmec types, SCCmec subtypes, rules for nomenclature, and multiple methods for identifying SCCmec types and subtypes were summarized in this review, according to the perspective of the International Working Group on the Classification of Staphylococcal Cassette Chromosome Elements.

With the development of megalopolises, constant expansion of their borders and chaotic and – to a greater extent – unreasonable territorial division of lands, potential recreational areas are experiencing colossal anthropogenic load and can be found in the state of oppression, gradually moving into an industrial functional zone, from the environmental point of view. For the preservation of ecosystems and rational planning of urban development, it is necessary to pay special attention to the functional purpose and mode of use of the sites, which are the essence of zoning and governance in the field of urban development of land. This paper presents a geoecological assessment of the dynamics of changes in pollution halos among the functional areas of the Eastern Administrative Okrug of Moscow over the past 30 years. Geochemical series of pollutants were compiled with the help of methods of preliminary preparation and statistical data processing. A forecast of the spread of pollution in the surface horizon for the next 100 years is presented, taking into account the hydrogeological features of the territory of the Eastern Administrative Okrug of Moscow.

AbstractRecently most of the Gulf countries have had significant urban development, with innovative architecture, as a result of the production of Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) in many places in the world. This has generated an unprecedented construction boom in the cities and the surrounding areas.Despite their rather short urban history, the Gulf States have recently launched several signatures mega-projects, where public investments are developing an urban structure of a global dimension. Affecting the direction of the rapid urbanization is a permanent tension between the creation of a new, modern cultural identity and the promotion of traditional architecture. One aim is to establish new connections with local history and cultural traditions.To reveal the challenge of the construction of a new architectural identity in the Arab emerging cities, this paper focuses on the action needed to preserve historical, cultural, traditional, and architectural heritage, with the aim of filling the gaps of knowledge and encouraging new research in the fields of restoration and conservation that will lead to future practical implementation.The paper also calls for a fresh look at the tradition, modernity, and identity, by outlining a number of aspects related to the current status of architectural heritage conservation in some Arab cities. Traditional culture, ancient architectural constructions, and vernacular architecture are the result of historical processes and products of Arab societies. Understanding this is an indispensable tool for the comprehension of the Arab modern cities, a knowledge which can influence their future expansion and revitalization, and the shaping of a new architectural identity in these areas. In the Arab regions, restoration methodologies also need to be defined and implemented with the aim of preserving cultural heritage and raising the conservation and restoration research profile among the international research community.

Urban functional-zone (UFZ) analysis has been widely used in many applications, including urban environment evaluation, and urban planning and management. How to extract UFZs’ spatial units which delineates UFZs’ boundaries is fundamental to urban applications, but it is still unresolved. In this study, an automatic, context-enabled multiscale image segmentation method is proposed for extracting spatial units of UFZs from very-high-resolution satellite images. First, a window independent context feature is calculated to measure context information in the form of geographic nearest-neighbor distance from a pixel to different image classes. Second, a scale-adaptive approach is proposed to determine appropriate scales for each UFZ in terms of its context information and generate the initial UFZs. Finally, the graph cuts algorithm is improved to optimize the initial UFZs. Two datasets including WorldView-2 image in Beijing and GaoFen-2 image in Nanchang are used to evaluate the proposed method. The results indicate that the proposed method can generate better results from very-high-resolution satellite images than widely used approaches like image tiles and road blocks in representing UFZs. In addition, the proposed method outperforms existing methods in both segmentation quality and running time. Therefore, the proposed method appears to be promising and practical for segmenting large-scale UFZs.

Abstract As the global ecosystem protection agenda continuous to unfold, the topic of functional zoning of protected areas’ remains the subject of intensive discussions. The paper discusses the essence, specific features, key factors and actions taken to improve the functional zoning of national parks in Russia. On the example of the national park “Tunkinsky” it is shown how the functional zoning has changed since its creation and what factors influenced this process. The paper presents analysis of natural, historical, cultural, socio-economic, tourist-recreational and organizational conditions for functional zone allocation in the Tunkinsky National Park, as well as changes in the composition, naming, and area of the functional zones in the national park. Using the data from geolocation services, such as photos with a given geolocation posted by tourists in social networks, and GPS tracks of tourist routes, the authors prove the validity of changes in the functional zoning of the National Park, with an increase in the recreational zone, providing an optimal combination of nature conservation, tourist and recreational and economic functions was proved.

Human mobility data have become an essential means to study travel behavior and trip purpose to identify urban functional zones, which portray land use at a finer granularity and offer insights for problems such as business site selection, urban design, and planning. However, very few works have leveraged public bicycle-sharing data, which provides a useful feature in depicting people’s short-trip transportation within a city, in the studies of urban functions and structure. Because of its convenience, bicycle usage tends to be close to point-of-interest (POI) features, the combination of which will no doubt enhance the understanding of the trip purpose for characterizing different functional zones. In our study, we propose a data-driven approach that uses station-based public bicycle rental records together with POI data in Hangzhou, China to identify urban functional zones. Topic modelling, unsupervised clustering, and visual analytics are employed to delineate the function matrix, aggregate functional zones, and present mixed land uses. Our result shows that business areas, industrial areas, and residential areas can be well detected, which validates the effectiveness of data generated from this new transportation mode. The word cloud of function labels reveals the mixed land use of different types of urban functions and improves the understanding of city structures.

Nighttime light (NTL) images have been broadly applied to extract urban built-up areas in recent years. However, the typical NTL images provided by Defense Meteorological Satellite Program/Operational Linescan System (DMSP/OLS) and National Polar-Orbiting Partnership’s Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (NPP/VIIRS) have the drawbacks of low resolution and blooming effect, which bring difficulty for the application of them in urban built-up area extraction. Therefore, this paper proposes the POI (point of interest) and LST (land surface temperature) adjusted NTL urban index (PLANUI) to extract the urban built-up areas with high accuracy. PLANUI is the first urban index to integrate POI and NTL for urban built-up area extraction. In this paper, NPP/VIIRS and Luojia 1-01 images were introduced as the original NTL data and the vegetation adjusted NTL urban index (VANUI) was selected as the comparison item. The threshold method was utilized to extract urban built-up areas from these data. The results show that: (1) Based on the comparison with the reference data, the PLANUI can make up the shortcoming of low resolution and the blooming effect of NTL effectively. (2) Compared with the VANUI, the PLANUI can significantly improve the accuracy of the urban built-up areas extracted and characterize urban features. (3) According to the results based on NPP/VIIRS and Luojia 1-01 images, the PLANUI has extensive applicability, both for regions with different degrees of economic development and NTL data with different resolutions. PLANUI can enhance the features of urban built-up areas with social sensing data and natural remote sensing data, which helps to weaken the NTL blooming effect and improve the extraction accuracy. PLANUI can provide an effective approach for urban built-up area extraction, which plays a certain guiding role for the study of urban structure, urban expansion, and urban planning and governance.

Qinhuangdao City combines three traditional coastal zone resources, namely, harbor, tourism and fishery. A scheme for the functional zone division of Qinhuangdao City is proposed in this study. It is hoped that our study will contribute to the reasonable utilization of the coastal zone resources, achieve the equilibrium and optimization of economic, social and environmental benefits, as well as the sustainable development of coastal economy of Qinhuangdao City, Our research is based on field survey and thorough data analysis while giving full consideration to the coastal type and resources environment of Qinhuangdao City. Six functional areas are divided, and we separately focus on the distribution, resources advantages, main function and environmental protection of these functional areas. The current status and existing problems of coastal resources development are reviewed. Finally, we propose suggestions concerning the orientation of further coastal resources and provide reference for scientific utilization of coastal resources.
