Tasting minerality in wine is highly fashionable, but it is unclear what this involves. The present review outlines published work concerning how minerality in wine is perceived and conceptualised by wine professionals and consumers. Studies investigating physico-chemical sources of perceived minerality in wine are reviewed also. Unusually, for a wine sensory descriptor, the term frequently is taken to imply a genesis: the sensation is the taste of minerals in the wine that were transported through the vine from the vineyard rocks and soils. Recent studies exploring tasters’ definitions of minerality in wine support this notion. However, there are reasons why this cannot be. First, minerals in wine are nutrient elements that are related distantly only to vineyard geological minerals. Second, mineral nutrients in wine normally have minuscule concentrations and generally lack flavour. Results of reviewed studies overall demonstrate marked variability in both wine professionals’ and wine consumers’ definitions and sensory-based judgments of minerality in wine, although there is some consensus in terms of the other wine attributes that associate with the term mineral. The main wine composition predictors of perceived minerality involve a complex combination of organic compounds dependent on grape ripeness and/or derived from wine fermentations and redox status.

Abstract The merits of activated carbon for removal of organic compounds from wastewater have been well documented in the literature. On the other hand there is a lack of published data on the use of activated carbon for the removal of trace metals from wastewater. Experiments were designed to assess the possibility that activated carbon treatment would remove aluminum, cadmium, chromium, cobalt, copper, iron, lead, manganese, mercury, nickel, silver and zinc from wastewater. All metals studied were tested over the pH range 3-11. Greater than 99.5% removal was achieved by pH adjustment and activated carbon treatment for most of the metals tested.

Amlapitta is a very common disease caused by Vidagdha Pitta with features like Amlodgara, Tiktodgara, Hrit, Kantha Daha etc. Pathya recommended in Amlapitta are Yava, Godhuma, Purana Shali, Mudga Yusha, Lajasaktu etc. Apathya recommended in Amlapitta are Navanna, Avidugdha, Masha, Kulattha, Dadhi and etc. So this present review article throws light on Pathya (conducive) and Apathya (non conducive) in Amlapitta.

In less than a decade, a small family of channel-forming glycoproteins, named pannexins, have captured the interest of many biologists, in large part due to their association with common diseases, ranging from cancers to neuropathies to infectious diseases. Although the pannexin family consists of only three members (Panx1, Panx2 and Panx3), one or more of these pannexins are expressed in virtually every mammalian organ, implicating their potential role in a diverse array of pathophysiologies. Panx1 is the most extensively studied, but features of this pannexin must be cautiously extrapolated to the other pannexins, as for example we now know that Panx2, unlike Panx1, exhibits unique properties such as a tendency to be retained within intracellular compartments. In the present review, we assess the biochemical and channel features of pannexins focusing on the literature which links these unique molecules to over a dozen diseases and syndromes. Although no germ-line mutations in genes encoding pannexins have been linked to any diseases, many cases have shown that high pannexin expression is associated with disease onset and/or progression. Disease may also occur, however, when pannexins are underexpressed, highlighting that pannexin expression must be exquisitely regulated. Finally, we discuss some of the most pressing questions and controversies in the pannexin field as the community seeks to uncover the full biological relevance of pannexins in healthy organs and during disease.

The Wnt signaling pathway is mediated by a family of secreted glycoproteins through canonical and noncanonical mechanism. The signaling pathways are regulated by various modulators, which are classified into two classes on the basis of their interaction with either Wnt or its receptors. Secreted frizzled-related proteins (sFRPs) are the member of class that binds to Wnt protein and antagonizes Wnt signaling pathway. The other class consists of Dickkopf (DKK) proteins family that binds to Wnt receptor complex. The present review discusses the disease related association of various polymorphisms in Wnt signaling modulators. Furthermore, this review also highlights that some of the sFRPs and DKKs are unable to act as an antagonist for Wnt signaling pathway and thus their function needs to be explored more extensively.

Abstract The catalytic power of organic compounds in general has up to the present time been studied much less extensively than that of inorganic compounds. For about the last ten years, however, the first author has, in collaboration with a number of his students, attempted to fill this gap, though so far efforts have been confined to explaining the mode of action of natural enzymes by means of comparative experiments with organic catalysts. As a result of this work, a theory based on experimental facts has been developed to explain in a satisfactory way the action of enzymes. The other phase of organic catalysis is, strictly speaking, a technical problem. Why for instance should it not be practicable to utilize organic catalysts more extensively than heretofore in industry? If this problem is to be attacked, it seems reasonable to start with the particular industry which already uses organic catalysts to the greatest extent. This is, of course, the rubber industry. The important accomplishments of the chemical industry with respect to the development of vulcanization accelerators is already common knowledge, and the important task at present is not simply to increase the great number of accelerators already known. A problem of more practical value would seem to be to study the mechanism of the acceleration of vulcanization, about which relatively little has been known heretofore.

The book represents the first part of the trilogy on the life, activity and views of the French writer, publicist ad thinker Charles Morraus, as well as on the history of the right monarchic movement “Action française”. The partial substitution of margarine with mature avocado pear pulp in the production of cookies was investigated. Five cookie samples were produced with avocado pear pulp and margarine blends in the ratios 80:20%, 70:30%, 60:40%, 50:50%, and 100% margarine serve as the control, labeled as B, C, D and E and A, respectively while the other ingredients used remain constant. The physico-chemical (proximate compositions, free fatty acids (FFA), iodine value, and peroxide value) and sensory qualities of the cookies were evaluated using standard methods. The results show ranged in moisture (11.13 to 14.60%), crude protein (6.93 to 7.83%), crude fat (16.00 to 18.03%), ash (1.40 to 2.09%), crude fiber (0.29 to 0.62%), carbohydrate (59.70 to 62.79%), FFA (0.35 to 1.01 mg KOH/g), iodine value (75.63 to 81.17 g I2/100 g) and peroxide value (2.96 to 5.27 meq/kg). The partial substitution of margarine with avocado pear pulp produced nutritious cookies with desirable organoleptic qualities. Also, the results demonstrated that cookies had acceptability up to a 30% level of substitution with avocado pear pulp. The findings indicated the feasibility of avocado pear pulp in fat-reduced cookies preparation, this will reduce the pressure in using only margarine in cookies making and diversify the use of avocado pear.

The article presents the results of studies of carcasses of domestic and wild ducks for the purpose of detection of sarcocystosis. The commodity, organoleptic, physico-chemical, microbiological indicators of the meat of sick and healthy domestic and wild ducks were determined. Researches were carried out in spring and autumn in the farms of six regions of Central Russia, on the territory of which there were large reservoirs (ponds, lakes or swamps). The intensity of the destruction of wild ducks by sarcocystosis was high, of domestic ducks was medium. Sarcocystis one wild duck found in large quantity in the chest muscles and lower in the muscles of the neck, the other two (domestic and wild) affected ducks Sarcocystis was discovered in many skeleton, which muscles. In chest muscles of one wild duck sarcocystis has revealed in large quantity and lower in the muscles of the neck, sarcocystis was discovered in many muscles of skeleton of the other two (domestic and wild) affected ducks. The size of the sarcocystosis was different, but no more than the millet grain. In our opinion, in cases of intense muscle lesions with sarcocistosis, carcasses and poultry organs should be sent for disposal or fed to animals after stripping and boiling for at least 1 hour. At weak injury and the absence of dystrophic processes in the muscles of the carcass, their internal organs are cleaned and sent to the canning industry. It is not allowed to feed infected sarcocistosis raw bird meat to dogs, cats and other carnivores.

In this chapter, the performance of combined treatment of municipal landfill leachate is reviewed. Although individual physico-chemical treatments are suitable for the removal of heavy metals and hydrolyzation of some organic compounds, a combination of two physico-chemical treatments or physico-chemical and biological is required for optimum treatment of stabilized landfill leachate. A combination of two physico-chemical treatments can give optimum results in removal of recalcitrant organic compounds from stabilized leachate, as reflected by a significant decrease of the COD values after treatment. On the other hand, a combination of physico-chemical and biological treatments is required to achieve effective removal of NH3-N and COD with a substantial amount of biodegradable organic matter. In many cases, physico-chemical treatments are suitable for pre-treatment of stabilized leachate. The objective of this paper is to highlight various types of integrated leachate treatments as it has been difficult to get optimum efficiency from single approached treatment.
