The automatic charging of electric vehicles is an important but challenging problem. Recently, various charging robots are proposed for electric vehicles. Most previous researches do not pay enough attention to the robots’ load capacities. Actually, providing the charging connector with adequate pushing and/or pulling forces is vital to guarantee a reliable electrical connection, which is a key issue for charging robot design. In this paper, we present a novel serial-parallel robot for the automatic charging of electric vehicles. This robot is based on the 3 universal-prismatic-universal (3UPU) parallel mechanism and featured by high-load capacity. We firstly address the kinematic and static models of the proposed robot, then analyze its load capacity. It is shown that the robot’s maximum load capacity depends not only on the driving ability of the prismatic joints, but also on the robot’s structural parameters and the robot’s configuration. Finally, optimizations are made and results show that the robot’s load capacity along the desired trajectory has more than doubled. Results of this paper could be useful for the development of automatic electric-vehicle-charging devices.

The consideration of the thermal behavior of electric machines is becoming increasingly important in the machine design for electric vehicles due to the adaptation to more dynamic operating points compared to stationary applications. Whereas, the dependency of machine efficiency on thermal behavior is caused due to the impact of temperature on the resulting loss types. This leads to a shift of efficiency areas in the efficiency diagram of electric machines and has a significant impact on the maximum load capability and an impact on the cycle efficiency during operation, resulting in a reduction in the overall range of the electric vehicle. Therefore, this article aims at analyzing the thermal load limits of induction machines in regard to actual operation using measured driving data of battery electric vehicles. For this, a thermal model is implemented using MATLAB® and investigations to the sensitivity of model parameters as well as analysis of the continuous load capacity, thermal load and efficiency in driving cycles under changing boundary conditions are conducted.

Parallel robots have received special interest due to their advantages over conventional serial mechanisms: high rigidity, high load capacity, high velocity and high precision. The parallel robot is a mechatronic system and requires to be designed in the spirit of the mechatronic philosophy. The use of a parallel robot in a given application requires a careful analysis of the structure and of the indispensable parameters. Structural synthesis of mechanisms for parallel robots is addressed in detail. This paper proposes a method of structural synthesis of the parallel robotic mechanism according to the concept of the mechatronic philosophy and of the kinematic connections. The authors offer a system for analyzing the robot performances based on the3D CompuGaugeequipment.

This article outlines methods to facilitate the assessment of the impact of electric vehicle charging on distribution networks at planning stage and applies them to a case study. As network planning is becoming a more complex task, an approach to automated network planning that yields the optimal reinforcement strategy is outlined. Different reinforcement measures are weighted against each other in terms of technical feasibility and costs by applying a genetic algorithm. Traditional reinforcements as well as novel solutions including voltage regulation are considered. To account for electric vehicle charging, a method to determine the uptake in equivalent load is presented. For this, measured data of households and statistical data of electric vehicles are combined in a stochastic analysis to determine the simultaneity factors of household load including electric vehicle charging. The developed methods are applied to an exemplary case study with Norwegian low-voltage networks. Different penetration rates of electric vehicles on a development path until 2040 are considered.

Electric vehicle charging station have become an urgent need in many communities around the world, due to the increase of using electric vehicles over conventional vehicles. In addition, establishment of charging stations, and the grid impact of household photovoltaic power generation would reduce the feed-in tariff. These two factors are considered to propose setting up charging stations at convenience stores, which would enable the electric energy to be shared between locations. Charging stations could collect excess photovoltaic energy from homes and market it to electric vehicles. This article examines vehicle travel time, basic household energy demand, and the electricity consumption status of Okinawa city as a whole to model the operation of an electric vehicle charging station for a year. The entire program is optimized using MATLAB mixed integer linear programming (MILP) toolbox. The findings demonstrate that a profit could be achieved under the principle of ensuring the charging station’s stable service. Household photovoltaic power generation and electric vehicles are highly dependent on energy sharing between regions. The convenience store charging station service strategy suggested gives a solution to the future issues.

This paper presents a systematic structure and a control strategy for the electric vehicle charging station. The system uses a three-phase three-level neutral point clamped (NPC) rectifier to drive multiple three-phase three-level NPC converters to provide electric energy for electric vehicles. This topology can realize the single-phase AC mode, three-phase AC mode, and DC mode by adding some switches to meet different charging requirements. In the case of multiple electric vehicles charging simultaneously, a system optimization control algorithm is adopted to minimize DC-bus current fluctuation by analyzing and reconstructing the DC-bus current in various charging modes. This algorithm uses the genetic algorithm (ga) as the core of computing and reduces the number of change parameter variables within a limited range. The DC-bus current fluctuation is still minimal. The charging station system structure and the proposed system-level optimization control algorithm can improve the DC-side current stability through model calculation and simulation verification.

Because of their distinctive characteristics, aerostatic bearings are particularly suitable for high-precision applications. However, because of the compressibility of the lubricant, this kind of bearing is characterized by low relative stiffness and poor damping. Compensation methods represent a valuable solution to these limitations. This paper presents a design procedure for passively compensated bearings controlled by diaphragm valves. Given a desired air gap height at which the system should work, the procedure makes it possible to maximize the stiffness of the bearing around this value. The designed bearings exhibit a quasi-static infinite stiffness for load variation ranging from 20% to almost 50% of the maximum load capacity of the bearing. Moreover, the influence of different parameters on the performance of the compensated pad is evaluated through a sensitivity analysis.

Abstract ITA and EMBRAER are currently executing the research project Automation of Aircraft Structural Assembly (AASA) whose goal is to implement a robotic cell for automating the riveting process of aeronautical structures. The proposal described herein complements the AASA project, adds other manufacturing processes, namely sanding and polishing of aircraft surfaces. To implement the additional processes AASA project resources and facilities were used (robots and metrology systems) and devices designed and /or acquired to allow sharing of these resources. Among these, an Automatic Tooling Support for AERonautics structures (ATS_AER) was designed and built; also, a robot tool changer with high load capacity was acquired. The outcome of this research project is the evaluation of the feasibility of automating the processes of sanding and polishing metal surfaces in the aircraft manufacture using robots. The operating method adopted for surface treatment employed the ‘U’ type trajectory optimised to be run by a KUKA robot KR 500. The sanding process has been applied to aluminum metal sheet specimen sized 2•18ft2 (0•20m2) and used commercial 600 and 800 sandpaper. The automated sanding process yielded an average value of RA 0•48 ± 0•08 which is 25% more efficient when compared to the traditional, manual process whose average value of RA is 0•75 ± 0•51.

A flat sector shaped pad geometry for gas lubricated thrust bearings is analyzed considering both pitch and roll angles of the pad and the true film thickness distribution. Maximum load capacity is achieved when the pad is tilted so as to create a uniform minimum film thickness along the pad trailing edge. Performance characteristics for various geometries and operating conditions of gas thrust bearings are presented in the form of design curves. A comparison is made with the rectangular slider approximation. It is found that this approximation is unsafe for practical design, since it always overestimates load capacity.
