There are no studies about insight or awareness of illness in patients with Prader-Willi Syndrome (PWS). The objective of this study was to explore the level of awareness of the disorder, of the need for medication, and of the social consequences of the disease, as well as of its main symptoms in PWS. We also aimed to explore relationships between awareness and sociodemographic and clinical characteristics, and to compare all data with a matched sample of patients with psychosis. Insight was assessed by an Adapted version of the Scale of Unawareness of Mental Disorder in a cross-sectional pilot study at a University Hospital. Thirty-six individuals with PWS (58.3% women) were included. Results showed that PWS patients had a good awareness of the illness and of the effects of medication, in contrast to a lack of awareness of illness’ social consequences. Awareness of obesity/overweight was excellent, as was the awareness of excessive appetite. Awareness of excessive food intake was only mild. Insight correlated with age and functionality, but not with BMI. PWS patients showed a better insight into the illness but a similar awareness of the effects of the medication and of the social consequences of the disease as compared to schizophrenia-spectrum patients. This profile of insight may have relevant clinical implications.

Treating patients with schizophrenia has evolved towards including, as an effective goal, their functional remission. Beyond the discrepancies in this concept definition, a plethora of studies has been conducted trying to identify predictors of functioning in schizophrenia. Among which antipsychotic prescription and related side effects.AimExplore extrapyramidal side effects link with functional prognosis of patients with schizophrenia spectrum disorder.MethodsWe conducted a cross-sectional, retrospective and descriptive study in the psychiatry department “C”, in Razi hospital (Tunis), between October 2014 and March 2015. Sixty patients suffering from schizophrenia spectrum disorder (DSM IV-R) were included. Functional status was explored with the Global Assessment of Functioning Scale (GAF), the Social and Occupational Functioning Assessment Scale (SOFAS) and the Social Autonomy Scale (EAS). Extrapyramidal side effects (EPS) were evaluated using the Simpson and Angus Rating Scale (SAS).ResultsFunctional remission was achieved according to GAF, SOFAS and EAS in respectively: 63,30%, 48,30% and 51,70% of the patients. SAS mean score was 0.898 ± 0.29 (0.4–2). Although SAS showed no significant association with GAF, SOFAS and EAS global scores, patient with less EPS had better autonomy in EAS’ dimension “Relationship with the outside” (P = 0.048).ConclusionEPS may influence functional remission at several levels starting from the neurobiological to the social stigmatization and the treatment adherence levels. Further research in this matter is required.Disclosure of interestThe authors have not supplied their declaration of competing interest.

ABSTRACT The aim of this study was to evaluate the social support for people with AIDS. It was a cross-sectional study, with 215 outpatients at a University Hospital in Northeastern Brazil. Data were collected from August to December 2012, through interviews, using a Socio-demographic and Clinical Form and a Social Support Scale for People Living with HIV/AIDS. Statistical Package for the Social Science was used for data analysis. Results showed that average scores of social emotional and instrumental support were satisfactory and not influenced by sex (p=0.954; p=0.508), education (p=0.756; p=0.194), marital status (p=0.076; p=0.446) and length of antiretroviral therapy (p=0.480; p=0.120). People diagnosed for less than three years had more instrumental support (p=0.048) than those diagnosed over three years (p=0.370). Neighbors, employers and health professionals provided less support. The conclusion was that people with AIDS have satisfactory social support, especially from friends and family not living in the same household.

Objective Some degree of general worry about cancer may facilitate screening participation, but specific worries about the potential consequences (e.g. treatment, death) may act as deterrents. No studies have examined these associations in the same sample. We assessed associations between general versus specific cancer worries and cancer screening participation. Methods In 2016, a population-based cross-sectional survey of adults living in England was carried out. This paper reports analyses of a subsample (n = 1694). Measures included (i) frequency of general cancer worry, (ii) specific worries about the emotional and physical consequences of a cancer diagnosis, and (iii) specific worries about the social consequences of a cancer diagnosis. Logistic regression analyses examined their association with self-reported screening uptake among participants eligible for cervical (n = 671), breast (n = 323), and colorectal (n = 368) cancer screening. Results Frequency of general cancer worry was not associated with screening participation. Specific worry about the emotional and physical consequences increased the odds of participants reporting regular uptake of colorectal screening (OR 1.41, 95% CI 1.04–1.90). Specific worry about the social consequences of diagnosis was negatively associated with regular attendance for cervical and breast screening in unadjusted analyses only. In adjusted models, the associations were no longer statistically significant for cervical (OR 0.82, 95% CI 0.65–1.03) or breast (OR 0.69, 95% CI 0.45–1.04) screening. Conclusions Specific worries about cancer may be differentially associated with participation across screening programmes. Further research is needed, as interventions to optimise informed participation may be improved if the specific worries associated with low participation in each programme are understood.

Objective: The aim of the present study was to verify the relationship between partner-oriented and children-oriented perfectionism, and their associations with narcissism and with difficulties in the romantic and parental domains. Differences between women and men were also analyzed.Method: 459 individuals participated, 264 women and 195 men (Mage = 33.88, SD = 4.39). All participants were Polish, had at least one child and were in a romantic relationship. In this cross-sectional, questionnaire study the Dyadic Almost Perfect Scale was applied along with its new adaptation, developed to measure children-oriented perfectionism: the Children Dyadic Almost Perfect Scale. Results: Partner dyadic perfectionism and children dyadic perfectionism, both in women and in men, were related to each other and positively correlated with narcissism. Partner-oriented perfectionism turned out to be a specific predictor of difficulties in the romantic relation, whereas children-oriented perfectionism was found to be a predictor of difficulties in the parental relation. Conclusion: The results suggest that studies on dyadic perfectionism should take into consideration concrete individuals at whom perfectionistic expectations are directed (e.g., partner and children). This will enable a more precise investigation of the influence of perfectionism on family life and a better understanding of the social consequences of other-oriented perfectionism.

Objective: to analyze the satisfaction of family members with the social support received during the care of children exposed to human immunodeficiency virus. Methods: cross-sectional study with 87 relatives of these children, in a university hospital. The Satisfaction with Social Support Scale was used. Sociodemographic and clinical variables were analyzed using the Lilliefors, Kruskal-Wallis and Mann-Whitney tests. Results: the participants, mostly mothers, showed high satisfaction with the total social support (57 out of 75 points). The average indicated that the satisfaction was high for the support received from the family (80.46), followed by that provided by friendships (72.86) and intimacy (63.36) and low for social activities (55.65). The group classified with income up to R$879.00 presented less satisfaction with social support (average=50,83) if compared with the group of income superior to R$879.00 (average=58,78) (p=0,014). Conclusion: the satisfaction with the social support of the relatives is high and influenced by income.

ABSTRACTForecasts suggest that unemployment will remain above 2 million in Britain for the best part of the 1980s. The social consequences of protracted high levels of unemployment are explored. The evidence comes from four types of source: cross-sectional surveys of (unemployed) individuals; longitudinal and cohort studies; aggregrate time series; and area-based studies. The advantages and limitations of each are identified. The available evidence on the consequences of unemployment for poverty; health and mortality; mental health; crime and delinquency; and the social fabric is reviewed. The implications for policy and public expenditure are explored.
