Thin-ply laminates exhibit a higher degree of freedom in design and altered failure behaviour, and therefore, an increased strength for unnotched laminates in comparison to thick-ply laminates. For notched laminates, the static strength is strongly decreased; this is caused by a lack of stress relaxation through damage, which leads to a higher stress concentration and premature, brittle failure. To overcome this behaviour and to use the advantage of thin-ply laminates in areas with high stress concentrations, we have investigated thin-ply hybrid laminates with different metal volume fractions. Open hole tensile (OHT) and open hole compression (OHC) tests were performed with quasi-isotropic carbon fibre reinforced plastic (CFRP) specimens. In the area of stress concentration, 90° layers were locally substituted by stainless steel layers of differing volume fractions, from 12.5% to 25%. The strain field on the specimen surface was evaluated in-situ using a digital image correlation (DIC) system. The embedding of stainless steel foils in thin-ply samples increases the OHT strength up to 60.44% compared to unmodified thin-ply laminates. The density specific OHT strength is increased by 33%. Thick-ply specimens achieve an OHC strength increase up to 45.7%, which corresponds to an increase in density specific strength of 32.4%.

The paper presents the assessment of the possibility and reliability of the digital image correlation (DIC) system for engineering and scientific purposes. The studies were performed with the use of samples made of the three different materials—mild S235JR + N steel, microalloyed fine-grain S355MC steel, and high strength 41Cr4 steel subjected to different heat-treatment. The DIC studies were focused on determinations of dangerous zones with large stress concentrations, plastic deformation growth, and prediction of the failure zone. Experimental tests were carried out for samples with different notches (circular, square, and triangular openings). With the use of the DIC system and microstructure analyses, the influence of different factors (laser cutting, heat treatment, material type, notch shape, and manufacturing quality) on the material behavior were studied. For all studied cases, the stress concentration factors (SCF) were estimated with the use of the analytical formulation and the finite element analysis. It was observed that the theoretical models for calculations of the influence of the typical notches may result in not proper values of SCFs. Finally, the selected results of the total strain distributions were compared with FEM results, and good agreement was observed. All these allow the authors to conclude that the application of DIC with a common digital camera can be effectively applied for the analysis of the evolution of plastic zones and the damage detection for mild high-strength steels, as well as those normalized and quenched and tempered at higher temperatures.

As technology nodes progress to 16/14nm and beyond underfill materials are presented with the significantly challenging task of maintaining bump protection while ensuring low warpage for ultra low-K dielectric (ULK/ELK) integrity. This challenge is further complicated by the trend toward RoHS compliancy (lead-free) and an ever increasing die size (beyond 25x25mm). Through extensive research and testing, several specifically formulated underfill materials were determined acceptable solutions for these complex issues. As technology nodes progress to smaller processes high stress concentrations are seen at the dielectric layer during thermal cycling. This stress is a typical result of a high glass transition temperature (Tg) / high strength material that often leads delamination or a cracking failure mode of the thin dielectric layer. Too low of a Tg presents a high stress concentration on the bumps which once again constitutes failure, this time, however, the crack is typically seen at the bump location. This high stress concentration seen at the bumps is more significant when lead free bumps are considered due to their inherent fragile nature. Underfill materials must now be specifically optimized for variable package conditions to solve these failure modes for a large variation of package designs. Desired material properties must be quickly calculated using finite element methods. This paper will discuss solutions to typical failure modes currently seen in reliability testing of present and future technologies.

Purpose Additive manufacturing (AM) enables the production of lightweight parts with complex shapes and small dimensions. Recent improvements in AM techniques have allowed a significant growth of AM for industrial applications. In particular, AM is suitable for the production of materials shaped in lattice, which are very attractive for their lightweight design and their multi-functional properties. AM parts are often characterised by geometrical imperfections, residual porosity, high surface roughness which typically lead to stress/strain localisations and decreasing the resistance of the structure. This paper aims to focus on the study of the effects of geometrical irregularities and stress concentrations derived from them. Design/methodology/approach In this paper, several technique were combined: 3D tomography, experimental tests, digital image correlation and finite elements (FE) models based on both the as-designed and the as-manufactured geometries of lattice materials. The Digital Image Correlation technique allowed to measure local deformations in the specimen during the experimental test. The micro-computed tomography allowed to reconstruct the as-manufactured geometries of the specimens, from which the geometrical quality of the micro-structure is evaluated to run FE analyses. Findings Experimental and numerical results were compared by means of a stress concentration factor. This factor was calculated in three different specimens obtained from three-different printing processes to compare and understand their mechanical properties. Considering the as-designed geometry, it is not possible to model geometrical imperfections, and a FE model based on an as-manufactured geometry is needed. The results show that the mechanical properties of the printed samples are directly related to the statistical distribution of the stress concentration factor. Originality/value In this work, several techniques were combined to study the mechanical behaviour of lattice micro-structures. Lattice materials obtained by different selective laser melting printing parameters show different mechanical behaviours. A stress concentration factor can be assumed as a measure of the quality of these mechanical properties.

ABSTRAK Salah satu mekanisme kegagalan yang utama dalam aplikasi teknik atau komponen mesin adalah penjalaran retak kelelahan. Penjalaran retak ini biasanya dimulai dari titik-titik pada daerah yang mengalami konsentrasi tegangan yang tinggi. Oleh karena itu salah satu metode untuk menghambat penjalaran retak adalah  mereduksi konsentrasi tegangan dimana salah satu metode yang digunakan adalah pemberian lubang di ujung retak atau dikenal dengan stop-drilled hole (SDH). Pada penelitian ini akan dikembangkan modifikasi bentuk model SDH. Pada dasarnya model yang dikembangkan ini adalah merubah bentuk pada sisi lubang agar tidak berbentuk lengkungan sehingga  konsentrasi tegangan menurun di daerah tersebut. Pemodelan lubang yang dikembangkan pada peneltian ini adalah penggambungan dua lubang dan tiga lubang pada ujung retak. Pada penelitian ini akan dilakukan penghitungan faktor konsentrasi tegangan untuk variasi jari-jari lubang yang diberikan. Dari penelitian yang telah dilakukan dapat disimpulkan bahwa pemberian dua lubang dan tiga lubang pada ujung cetak tersebut dapat mereduksi faktor konsentrasi tegangan dengan signifikan, nilai faktor konsentrasi tegangan antara dua lubang dan tiga lubang tidak berbeda signifikan terutama dengan meningkatnya nilai jari-jari lubang. Sementara itu, faktor konsentrasi tegangan tetinggi terjadi pada daerah perubahan geometri pada lubang untuk pemberian dua atau tiga lubang, akan tetapi faktor konsentrasi tegangannya masih cukup rendah jika dibandingkan dengan pemberian satu lubang. Kata Kunci : Konsentrasi Tegangan, Penjalaran Retak, Stop-Drilled Hole (SDH)   ABSTRACT One of the major failure mechanisms in engineering applications or machine components is the propagation of fatigue cracking. The spreading of these cracks usually are started from the points on the regions that are  experiencing high stress concentrations. Therefore, one of the method to inhibit this crack propagation is reducing the stress concentration in which one of the used methods  is the provision of a hole at the end of a crack or known as a stop-drilled hole (SDH). In this research will be developed  a modification form of SDH model. Basically the developed model is changing the shape on the hole side so there are not forming of the curve so that the stress concentration decreases in this area. The developed hole model in this research is the binding of two holes and three holes at the crack tip. This research will be calculated the stress concentration factor for variation of given hole radius. From the research that has been done, it can be concluded that the two holes and three holes on the tip of the crack can reduce the stress concentration factor significantly. Moreover,  the value of the stress concentration factor between two holes and three holes is not significantly different, especially with the increment of the hole radius. Meanwhile, the high stress concentration factor occured in the geometrical change area of the hole for two or three holes, but the stress concentration factor is still quite low when compared to the one hole. Keywords : Stress Concentration, Crack Propagation, Stop-Drilled Hole (SDH)

This paper explores the initial potential of theory of critical distance (TCD) which offers essential fatigue failure prediction in engineering components. The intention is to find the most appropriate TCD approach for a case of multiple stress concentration features in future research. The TCD is based on critical distance from notch root and represents the extension of linear elastic fracture mechanics (LEFM) principles. The approach is allowing possibilities for fatigue limit prediction based on localized stress concentration, which are characterized by high stress gradients. Using the finite element analysis (FEA) results and some data from literature, TCD applications is illustrated by a case study on engineering components in different geometrical notch radius. Further applications of TCD to various kinds of engineering problems are discussed.

Metallic materials are widely used for fabricating medical implants due to their high specific strength, biocompatibility, good corrosion properties, and fatigue resistance. Recently, titanium (Ti) and its alloys, as well as stainless steel (SS), have attracted attention from researchers because of their biocompatibility properties within the human body; however, improvements in mechanical properties while keeping other beneficial properties unchanged are still required. Severe plastic deformation (SPD) is a unique process for fabricating an ultra-fine-grained (UFG) metal with micrometer- to nanometer-level grain structures. SPD methods can substantially refine grain size and represent a promising strategy for improving biological functionality and mechanical properties. This present review paper provides an overview of different SPD techniques developed to create nano-/ultra-fine-grain-structured Ti and stainless steel for improved biomedical implant applications. Furthermore, studies will be covered that have used SPD techniques to improve bone cell proliferation and function while decreasing bacterial colonization when cultured on such nano-grained metals (without resorting to antibiotic use).

AbstractIn situ tensile tests employing digital image correlation were conducted to study the martensitic transformation of oligocrystalline Fe–Mn–Al–Ni shape memory alloys in depth. The influence of different grain orientations, i.e., near-〈001〉 and near-〈101〉, as well as the influence of different grain boundary misorientations are in focus of the present work. The results reveal that the reversibility of the martensite strongly depends on the type of martensitic evolving, i.e., twinned or detwinned. Furthermore, it is shown that grain boundaries lead to stress concentrations and, thus, to formation of unfavored martensite variants. Moreover, some martensite plates seem to penetrate the grain boundaries resulting in a high degree of irreversibility in this area. However, after a stable microstructural configuration is established in direct vicinity of the grain boundary, the transformation begins inside the neighboring grains eventually leading to a sequential transformation of all grains involved.

The impact of microstructure evolution on mechanical properties in superduplex stainless steel UNS S32750 (EN 1.4410) was investigated. To this end, different thermomechanical treatments were carried out in order to obtain clearly distinct duplex microstructures. Optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy, together with texture measurements, were used to characterize the morphology and the preferred orientations of ferrite and austenite in all microstructures. Additionally, the mechanical properties were assessed by tensile tests with digital image correlation. Phase morphology was not found to significantly affect the mechanical properties and neither were phase volume fractions within 13% of the 50/50 ratio. Austenite texture was the same combined Goss/Brass texture regardless of thermomechanical processing, while ferrite texture was mainly described by α-fiber orientations. Ferrite texture and average phase spacing were found to have a notable effect on mechanical properties. One of the original microstructures of superduplex stainless steel obtained here shows a strength improvement by the order of 120 MPa over the industrial material.

A recently proposed fatigue life model for rolling bearings has been applied to the study of lifetime reduction under conditions conducive to microspalling. The presence of a spike in the EHD pressure distribution produces large shear stresses localized very close to the surface which may account for early failure. This paper describes a parametric study of the effect of such spikes. Accurate stress fields in the volume are calculated for simulated pressure spikes of different height, width and position relative to a Hertzian pressure distribution, as well as for different lubricant traction coefficients and film thicknesses. Despite the high stress concentrations in the surface layers, reductions in life predicted by the model are modest. Typically, the pressure spike may halve the life, with the implication that subsurface fatigue still dominates. In corroboration of this prediction, preliminary experimental work designed to reproduce microspalling conditions shows that microindents due to overrolling particles are a much more common form of surface damage than microspalling.

An approximate theoretical analysis is presented for the determination of stress concentration factors in thick walled cylinders with sideholes and crossholes. The cylinders are subjected to both internal pressure and external shrink-fit pressure. Stress concentration factors are plotted as functions of the geometrical ratios of outside diameter-to-bore diameter, and bore diameter-to-sidehole diameter. Theoretical results are compared to experimental values available in the literature and results of experiments described in a separate paper.
