Safety and reliability of constructions operated are predicted using the known mechanical properties of materials and geometry of cross-sections, and also the known internal forces. The extensometry technique (electro-resistant tensometers, wire gauges, sensor systems) is a common method applied under laboratory conditions to determine the deformation state of a material. The construction sector rarely uses ultrasonic extensometry with the acoustoelastic (AE) method which is based on the relation between the direction of ultrasonic waves and the direction of normal stresses. It is generally used to identify stress states of machine or vehicles parts, mainly made of steel, characterized by high homogeneity and a lack of inherent internal defects. The AE effect was detected in autoclaved aerated concrete (AAC), which is usually used in masonry units. The acoustoelastic effect was used in the tests described to identify the complex stress state in masonry walls (masonry units) made of AAC. At first, the relationships were determined for mean hydrostatic stresses P and mean compressive stresses σ3 with relation to velocities of the longitudinal ultrasonic wave cp. These stresses were used to determine stresses σ3. The discrete approach was used which consists in analyzing single masonry units. Changes in velocity of longitudinal waves were identified at a test stand to control the stress states of an element tested by the digital image correlation (DIC) technique. The analyses involved density and the impact of moisture content of AAC. Then, the method was verified on nine walls subjected to axial compression and the model was validated with the FEM micromodel. It was demonstrated that mean compressive stresses σ3 and hydrostatic stresses, which were determined for the masonry using the method considered, could be determined even up to ca. 75% of failure stresses at the acceptable error level of 15%. Stresses σ1 parallel to bed joints were calculated using the known mean hydrostatic stresses and mean compressive stresses σ3.

This paper presents the results: stress and strain of bed joints mortar, masonry units, reinforcement bars and mechanism of cracking of numerical simulations using ANSYS of reinforced brick wall in the horizontal shear. Willam-Warnke (WW-5) failure criterion for mortar and bricks and Huber-Mises-Hencky (HMH) plasticity surface for bed joints steel reinforcement (steel smooth bars and truss type reinforcement) has been used. Coulomb-Mohr (CM) criterion in the contact surfaces of mortar and bricks have been used in the interface elements. Numerical calculations showed satisfactory convergence of research in the patterns of cracking; and the load-strain relationship was similar to the results of research with regard only to the cracking time. Destructive force numerical models Hu,cal correspond to the forces observed at the first cracks in the walls Hu,mv. Reduction of transverse and longitudinal deformation of mortar bed joints have been reported in the immediate vicinity of the bars, and the reduction of the main stress of the bricks is reported in the case of the use reinforcement.

The structure safety can be assessed, but only indirectly, by identifying material properties, geometry of structures, and values of loads. The complete and comprehensive assessment can be done only after determining internal forces acting inside structures. Ultrasonic extensometry using an acoustoelastic effect (AE) is among the most common non-destructive techniques (NDT) of determining true stresses in structures. Theoretical bases of the method were described in the mid 20th century. They were founded on the correlation between ultrasonic waves and the value and direction of stresses. This method is commonly used to determine stresses mainly in homogeneous materials without any inherent internal defects. This method is rarely applied to porous or composite materials, such as concrete or rock due to a high dispersion of results. Autoclaved aerated concrete (AAC), characterized by high homogeneity and porosity, is the popular material in the construction sector, used to produce masonry units. The discussed tests involved the acoustoelastic effect to determine stresses in the masonry wall made of AAC. This paper presents a widely theoretical background for the AE method, and then describes the author’s own research on AAC divided into two stages. At first, the empirical relationships between compressive stress and velocity of longitudinal ultrasonic wave, including humidity, were determined. In stage II, nine masonry walls were tested in axial compression. Mean compressive stresses in the masonry wall determined with the proposed method were found to produce a satisfactory confidence level up to ca. 50% of failure stresses. Results were significantly understated for stresses of the order of 75% of failure stresses.

Experimental characterization and validation of skin components in aircraft entails multiple evaluations (structural, aerodynamic, acoustic, etc.) and expensive campaigns. They require different rigs and equipment to perform the necessary tests. Two of the main dynamic characterizations include the energy absorption under impact forcing and the identification of modal parameters through the vibration response under any broadband excitation, which also includes impacts. This work exploits the response of a stiffened aircraft composite panel submitted to a multi-impact excitation, which is intended for impact and energy absorption analysis. Based on the high stiffness of composite materials, the study worked under the assumption that the global response to the multi-impact excitation is linear with small strains, neglecting the nonlinear behavior produced by local damage generation. Then, modal identification could be performed. The vibration after the impact was measured by high-speed 3D digital image correlation and employed for full-field operational modal analysis. Multiple modes were characterized in a wide spectrum, exploiting the advantages of the full-field noninvasive techniques. These results described a consistent modal behavior of the panel along with good indicators of mode separation given by the auto modal assurance criterion (Auto-MAC). Hence, it illustrates the possibility of performing these dynamic characterizations in a single test, offering additional information while reducing time and investment during the validation of these structures.

The impact of microstructure evolution on mechanical properties in superduplex stainless steel UNS S32750 (EN 1.4410) was investigated. To this end, different thermomechanical treatments were carried out in order to obtain clearly distinct duplex microstructures. Optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy, together with texture measurements, were used to characterize the morphology and the preferred orientations of ferrite and austenite in all microstructures. Additionally, the mechanical properties were assessed by tensile tests with digital image correlation. Phase morphology was not found to significantly affect the mechanical properties and neither were phase volume fractions within 13% of the 50/50 ratio. Austenite texture was the same combined Goss/Brass texture regardless of thermomechanical processing, while ferrite texture was mainly described by α-fiber orientations. Ferrite texture and average phase spacing were found to have a notable effect on mechanical properties. One of the original microstructures of superduplex stainless steel obtained here shows a strength improvement by the order of 120 MPa over the industrial material.

Minimum Quantity Lubrication nanofluid (MQL-nanofluid) is a viable sustainable alternative to conventional flood cooling and provides very good cooling and lubrication in the machining of difficult to cut materials such as titanium and Inconel. The cutting action provides very difficult conditions for the coolant to access the cutting zone and the level of difficulty increases with higher cutting speeds. Furthermore, high compressive stresses, strain hardening and high chemical activity results in the formation of a ‘seizure zone’ at the tool-chip interface. In this work, the impact of MQL-nanofluid at the seizure zone and the corresponding effects on tool wear, surface finish, and power consumption during machining of Ti-6Al-4V was investigated. Aluminum Oxide (Al2O3) nanoparticles were selected to use as nano-additives at different weight fraction concentrations (0, 2, and 4 wt.%). It was observed that under pure MQL strategy there was significant material adhesion on the rake face of the tool while the adhesion was reduced in the presence of MQL-nanofluid at the tool-chip interface, thus indicating a reduction in the tool chip contact length (TCCL) and reduced seizure effect. Furthermore, the flank wear varied from 0.162 to 0.561 mm and the average surface roughness (Ra) varied from 0.512 to 2.81 µm. The results indicate that the nanoparticle concentration and the reduction in the seizure zone positively influence the tool life and quality of surface finish.

AbstractThe residual stress distribution in extruded components and wires after a conventional forming process is frequently unfavourable for subsequent processes, such as bending operations. High tensile residual stresses typically occur near the surface of the wire and thus limit further processability of the material. Additional heat treatment operations or shot peening are often inserted to influence the residual stress distribution in the material after conventional manufacturing. This is time and energy consuming. The research presented in this paper contains an approach to influence the residual stress distribution by modifying the forming process for wire-like applications. The aim of this process is to lower the resulting tensile stress levels near the surface or even to generate compressive stresses. To achieve these residual compressive stresses, special forming elements are integrated in the dies. These modifications in the forming zone have a significant influence on process properties, such as degree of deformation and deformation direction, but typically have no influence on the diameter of the product geometry. In the present paper, the theoretical approach is described, as well as the model set-up, the FE-simulation and the results of the experimental tests. The characterization of the residual stress states in the specimen was carried out by X-ray diffraction using the sin2Ψ method.

Abstract Coda waves have been shown to be sensitive to lab-controlled defects such as very small holes in fibrous composite material. In the real world, damages are subtler and more irregular. The main objective of this work is to investigate coda wave capability to detect low-velocity impact damages. The emphasis is to detect the presence of barely visible impact damages using ultrasonic waves. Detection of incipient damage state is important as it will grow over the life of the structure. Differential features, previously used in similar work, have been utilized to detect realistic impact damages on carbon fiber composites. Quasi-isotropic composite laminates were subjected to low-velocity impact energy ranging from 2J to 4.5J. Two differential features reported could be used detect the presence of damage. It is also observed that ply orientation can be a deterministic factor for indicating damages. The size and shape of the impact damage has been characterized using ultrasonic C-scans. Results indicate that coda waves can be used for the detection of damage due to low-velocity impact.

The results of two sets of impact experiments are reported within. To assist with model development using the impact data reported, the materials are mechanically characterized using a series of standard experiments. The first set of impact data comes from a series of coefficient of restitution (COR) experiments, in which a 2 m long pendulum is used to study “in-context” measurements of the coefficient of restitution for eight different materials (6061-T6 aluminum, phosphor bronze alloy 510, Hiperco, nitronic 60A, stainless steel 304, titanium, copper, and annealed copper). The coefficient of restitution is measured via two different techniques: digital image correlation (DIC) and laser Doppler vibrometry (LDV). Due to the strong agreement of the two different methods, only results from the digital image correlation are reported. The coefficient of restitution experiments are in context as the scales of the geometry and impact velocities are representative of common features in the motivating application for this research. Finally, a series of compliance measurements are detailed for the same set of materials. The compliance measurements are conducted using both nano-indentation and micro-indentation machines, providing sub-nm displacement resolution and μN force resolution. Good agreement is seen for load levels spanned by both machines. As the transition from elastic to plastic behavior occurs at contact displacements on the order of 30 nm, this data set provides a unique insight into the transitionary region.

The reliability consideration of LED products includes both luminous flux drop and color shift. Previous research either talks about luminous maintenance or color shift, because luminous flux degradation usually takes very long time to observe. In this paper, the impact of a VOC (volatile organic compound) contaminated luminous flux and color stability are examined. As a result, both luminous degradation and color shift had been recorded in a short time. Test samples are white, phosphor-converted, high-power LED packages. Absolute radiant flux is measured with integrating sphere system to calculate the luminous flux. Luminous flux degradation and color shift distance were plotted versus aging time to show the degradation pattern. A prognostic health management (PHM) method based on the state variables and state estimator have been proposed in this paper. In this PHM framework, unscented kalman filter (UKF) was deployed as the carrier of all states. During the estimation process, third order dynamic transfer function was used to implement the PHM framework. Both of the luminous flux and color shift distance have been used as the state variable with the same PHM framework to exam the robustness of the method. Predicted remaining useful life is calculated at every measurement point to compare with the tested remaining useful life. The result shows that state estimator can be used as the method for the PHM of LED degradation with respect to both luminous flux and color shift distance. The prediction of remaining useful life of LED package, made by the states estimator and data driven approach, falls in the acceptable error-bounds (20%) after a short training of the estimator.

Traffic noise is considered by people as one of the most important sources of environmental discomfort. A way to limit the traffic noise is to reduce the noise emission, for example, by using specific low noise pavements, particularly in suburban areas. However, in real situations, it can be difficult to evaluate the impact of a given pavement, because it depends, for example, on the road geometry, the meteorological conditions, or the distance of the receiver position. Finally it can be difficult to select the most appropriate pavement for a given noise reduction objective. In this paper, a simple method is proposed to evaluate the noise impact of a pavement, in typical road geometries and environmental conditions. The proposed approach uses two databases, the first one based on measurements of emission spectra of road vehicles on several typical pavements, the second one made of pre-calculations of noise propagation for typical road configurations. Finally, the method is implemented in an interactive web tool, called DEUFRABASE, which allows one to obtain a fast estimation of the L Aeq (1 h or 24 h) and L den noise levels for various pavements and road configurations, as functions of the traffic flow and composition. By comparing the method with measurements, it is showed that the tool, although based on a restricted number of pavements and on several simplifications, can predict the noise impact of typical road configurations, with an acceptable error, most often less than 2 dB.
