Cancer and malaria are major health conditions around the world despite many strategies and therapeutics available for their treatment. The most used strategy for the treatment of these diseases is the administration of therapeutic drugs, which suffer from several shortcomings. Some of the pharmacological limitations associated with these drugs are multi-drug resistance, drug toxicity, poor biocompatibility and bioavailability, and poor water solubility. The currently ongoing preclinical studies have demonstrated that combination therapy is a potent approach that can overcome some of the aforementioned limitations. Artemisinin and its derivatives have been reported to exhibit potent efficacy as anticancer and antimalarial agents. This review reports hybrid compounds containing artemisinin scaffolds and their derivatives with promising therapeutic effects for the treatment of cancer and malaria.

AbstractCoronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is the current major health crisis in the world. A successful strategy to combat the COVID-19 pandemic is the improvement of nutritional pattern. Garlic is one of the most efficient natural antibiotics against the wide spectrum of viruses and bacteria. Organosulfur (e.g., allicin and alliin) and flavonoid (e.g., quercetin) compounds are responsible for immunomodulatory effects of this healthy spice. The viral replication process is accelerated with the main structural protease of SARS-CoV-2. The formation of hydrogen bonds between this serine-type protease and garlic bioactives in the active site regions inhibits the COVID-19 outbreak. The daily dietary intake of garlic and its derived-products as an adjuvant therapy may improve side effects and toxicity of the main therapeutic drugs with reducing the used dose.

Malaria is a vector- and blood-borne infection that is responsible for a large number of deaths around the world. Most of the currently used antimalarial therapeutics suffer from drug resistance. The other limitations associated with the currently used antimalarial drugs are poor drug bioavailability, drug toxicity, and poor water solubility. Combination therapy is one of the best approaches that is currently used to treat malaria, whereby two or more therapeutic agents are combined. Different combination therapy strategies are used to overcome the aforementioned limitations. This review article reports two strategies of combination therapy; the incorporation of two or more antimalarials into polymer-based carriers and hybrid compounds designed by hybridization of two antimalarial pharmacophores.

The world is currently going through a disastrous event and a catastrophic upheaval caused by the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). The pandemic has resulted in loss of more than 150000 deaths across the globe. Originating from China and spreading across all continents within a short span of time, it has become a matter of international emergency. Different agencies are adopting diverse approaches to stop and spread of this viral disease but still now nothing confirmatory has come up. Due to lack of vaccines and proper therapeutic drugs, the disease is still spreading like wild fire without control. An Old but very promising method- the convalescent plasma therapy could be the key therapy to stop this pandemic. This method has already proven its mettle on several occasions previously and has been found to be effective in curing the pandemics induced by Ebola, severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus (SARS-CoV) and Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus (MERS-CoV). The severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) belongs to the same group of β-Coronavirus that has resulted in the above diseases. Therefore, the role of plasma therapy is being explored for treatment of this disease. In this review, we have mainly focused on the role of convalescent plasma therapy and why its use should be promoted in fight against COVID-19, as it could turn out to be a game changer.

Type 2 diabetes has become one of the major health problems of the modern world. It is assumed that environmental factors have a significant impact on the development of the disease, and great importance is ascribed to the diet, which can be modified accordingly. The diet can exert prophylactic and therapeutic effects; changes in the diet in advanced disease can improve the quality of life of diabetic patients and minimise the risk of complications, which are the direct cause of diabetes-related death. Functional food, which has a potentially health-enhancing effect in addition to its nutritional value, has been increasingly recognised and required. Cereal products are crucial in diabetic nutrition. Their function can additionally be enhanced by fortification with compounds with proven hypoglycaemic effects. Pasta has a low glycaemic index and is a good carrier of fortifying substances; hence, it can be highly recommended in diets for diabetic patients.

Background and Objectives: Oral cancer is the 6th most common cancer in the world and oral leukoplakia is an oral potentially malignant disorder that could develop into oral cancer. This systematic review focusses on randomized clinical trials for recombinant adenovirus p-53 (rAD-p53) therapy for the treatment of oral leukoplakia and cancer. Materials and Methods: We searched for research articles on various databases such as Pubmed/Medline, Embase, CNKI (China National Knowledge Infra-structure), Springerlink, cochrane and Web of sciences from 2003 to 2020. MeSH (Medical Subject Headings) terms were used for the search. Inclusion criteria included original research, randomized clinical trials and articles only in English language. Exclusion criteria were any articles that were not research articles, not randomized trials, non-human studies, etc. The articles were further graded on the Jadad scale. Results: 578 articles were assessed from various databases; only 3 articles were found to be appropriate for this review. Thus, meta-analysis was not performed because of heterogeneity and lack of data. In the three studies, whether rAD-p53 was used as a standalone therapy or with other therapies, there was a beneficial effect of the therapy. Furthermore, there were no serious adverse events and the only adverse events reported were fever, pain at the local injection site, flu-like symptoms and lowered WBC count. Conclusions: Thus, we can conclude that this therapy has a potential for beneficial therapeutic effects and further clinical trials with more patients need to be performed to get better understanding of the effect of rAD-p53 therapy, which probably will pave the way to its approval in other parts of the world.

BACKGROUND cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) have become prevalent in the world. They cause millions of deaths globally with the World Health Organization putting the figure at 17.9 million people every year. These statistics indicate the need for healthcare systems to leverage contemporary advanced technology to detect and diagnose CVDs and provide appropriate and timely care to reduce mortality rates. OBJECTIVE To conduct a scoping review exploring individual use of smartwatches with self-monitoring ECG functionality for diagnosing arrhythmias. METHODS Source were selected from six credible bibliographic databases: PubMed, Medline, EMBASE, PsycInfo, CINAHL, and Google Scholar. Intervention-related terms were used to identify relevant sources. Additionally, a forward search strategy was used to search the databases and identify appropriate peer-reviewed journals. RESULTS The research returned 230 sources, out of which 40 met the inclusion criterion. The studies revealed that increased research, development, and adoption of smartwatches and other wearable devices have intensified in the past two decades. The studies showed that using smartwatches can detect cardiac arrhythmias although this depends on the algorithms and biometric sensors utilized in the smartwatches. Watches with advanced algorithms, PPG, and EKG functionalities exhibit high accuracy, sensitivity, and specificity, detecting AFib and other arrhythmias with high efficacy. Therefore, the best way for technology companies to improve their watches’ accuracy is to design and use advanced algorithms and combine PPG, EKG, activity, and biochemical sensors. Conclusion: The contemporary healthcare space is replete with wearable and non-wearable ¬systems and devices central to detecting health conditions and informing the relevant stakeholders to take corrective actions. Smartwatches are wearable devices used chiefly by patients, health, and fitness enthusiasts to detect and monitor a series of conditions, such as heart rate. Their use has fostered timely detection of cardiac arrhythmias, and therefore, caregivers and policy-makers should emphasize their use. CONCLUSIONS Technological systems have proliferated many human spaces in the last three decades, including education, healthcare, and entertainment. Their use has improved operational efficiency, reduced costs, saved lives, and increased organizations’ bottom lines. Healthcare systems use technological devices and appliances to diagnose patients, perform surgeries, improve pharmacy operations, and reduce medical errors. That way, most healthcare facilities provide quality care, attaining positive clinical outcomes. The contemporary healthcare space is replete with wearable and non-wearable ¬systems and devices central to detecting health conditions and informing the relevant stakeholders – caregivers, patients, and family members – to take corrective actions. Smartwatches are wearable devices used chiefly by patients, health, and fitness enthusiasts to detect and monitor a series of conditions, such as heart rate. They are highly effective in detecting cardiac arrhythmias, and therefore, caregivers and policy-makers should emphasize their use.

Health concerns have gained proportional attention among the peoples and governments of the world. Or at least it looks that way! Terms like Cholesterol, Triglyceride, Diabetes, Tumor, Benign, Malignant are all too familiar to many. Health food and diets have mushroomed into large money making industries. I wonder if they are life-saving too! Furthermore, it is becoming more difficult to separate between health and environment. Hence, the deterioration of health conditions all over the world is closely associated to impairments in environmental conditions and natural resources.
