Academic success and excellence in marks are not only due to the students’ intrinsic abilities or skills. A multitude of contextual variables is involved in the teaching and learning process. This study identifies and analyses the contextual variables that most significantly affect students’ academic performance. We used census data from the ESCALA tests and context questionnaires for the 2016/17 school year, both carried out by the Andalusian Agency for Educational Assessment. Hierarchical Linear Models were used in the data analysis, as they facilitate the control and description of contextual factors. In addition, differences in performance were studied according to the contextual variables that the family dimension encompasses. At all times, a contextualised cross-sectional perspective was considered, taking as a criterion the covariates with significance values lower than 0.01 in the multilevel models and contrast tests. Finally, a list of contextual variables contributing to the explanation of performance is presented. The socio-economic and cultural conditions of families, their expectations towards their children’s education, and their level of involvement in schools have a significant influence on the academic success of primary school students. Academic success is higher among students with families who play an active role and have positive expectations regarding learning.

A sense of belonging in the cycle of teaching and learning is important to students because if they understand acceptance into the program, they will feel more inspired, more successful, and more driven. Students understand the value of school activities in a supportive and warm atmosphere that provides a sense of belonging and acceptance.  Moreover, it is a vital necessity for every individual. The sense of belonging for schools is about achievement, suggesting that the benefit of fulfilling this need is generally higher, reaching the students. Therefore, students who do not fulfill their needs for possessions will also have lower self-esteem. Low self-esteem is often associated with depression. Low self-esteem can lead to depression, and depression lowers self-esteem. Hence, the paper describes the extent of belongingness and level of self-esteem of high school students of a Catholic college in Antique during the school year 2019-2020. Likewise, this paper explored the relationship between the students' demographics and their sense of belongingness and self-esteem.

This study examined student-reported participation in school food and nutrition activities in Vancouver, British Columbia (BC), and whether engagement differed by gender and between elementary and secondary school students. A cross-sectional survey of grade 6–8 public school students (n = 937) from 20 elementary and 6 secondary schools assessed student-reported participation in a range of food and nutrition activities. Statistical analyses included descriptive statistics and multilevel logistic regression to examine associations between participation with gender and school type. Overall, <50% of students reported engaging in most of the food and nutrition activities examined in the 2011–2012 school year, including: food preparation (36%), choosing/tasting healthy foods (27%), learning about Canada’s Food Guide (CFG) (45%), learning about foods grown in BC (35%), gardening (21%), composting (32%), and recycling (51%). Females were more likely to report recycling and learning about CFG and BC-grown foods (P < 0.05). Secondary students were more likely to report activities focused on working with or learning about food/nutrition (P < 0.05). Despite local and provincial efforts to engage students in food and nutrition experiences, participation in most activities remains relatively low, with few students exposed to multiple activities. Continued advocacy is needed from the dietetics community to improve student engagement in food and nutrition activities.

ObjectiveTo examine the relationship between developmental health and neighbourhood socioeconomic status (SES) in kindergarten children with disabilities.DesignCross-sectional study using population-level database of children’s developmental health at school entry (2002–2014).Setting12 of 13 Canadian provinces/territories.MeasuresTaxfiler and Census data between 2005 and 2006, respectively, were aggregated according to custom-created neighbourhood boundaries and used to create an index of neighbourhood-level SES. Developmental health outcomes were measured for 29 520 children with disabilities using the Early Development Instrument (EDI), a teacher-completed measure of developmental health across five domains.AnalysisHierarchical generalised linear models were used to test the association between neighbourhood-level SES and developmental health.ResultsAll EDI domains were positively correlated with the neighbourhood-level SES index. The strongest association was observed for the language and cognitive development domain (β (SE): 0.29 (0.02)) and the weakest association was observed for the emotional maturity domain (β (SE): 0.12 (0.01)).ConclusionsThe magnitude of differences observed in EDI scores across neighbourhoods at the 5th and 95th percentiles are similar to the effects of more established predictors of development, such as sex. The association of SES with developmental outcomes in this population may present a potential opportunity for policy interventions to improve immediate and long-term outcomes.

Background: Body fatness and cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) are both related to health, and their interrelation to each other has been documented but with little information on Nigeria population. Objective: The purpose of this study was to evaluate relationship between cardiorespiratory fitness and skin folds, and ifthis relation is linear or curvilinear. Methods: A cross-sectional survey of secondary school students in Sagamu local government area of Ogun state, Nigeria during 2006 school year was carried out. Representative samples of 1638 apparently healthy students were selected from II schools with age ranged between 12 and 18 years. Their CRF, triceps and abdominal skin folds were measured. Results: The results showed a significant negative correlation between the variables but not significant for males' tricepsandsum ofskinfolds. There were significant graded relation between cardiorespiratory fitness and skin folds; the relations were curvilinear in the whole population. Coefficients of determination (R2) for cardiorespiratory fitness were 6.02%, 5.33% and 6.2% for triceps, abdominal and sum ofskin folds respectively. Conclusion: It is therefore, imperative to encourage participation in physical activities to improve fitness and thereby reduces the measure of adiposity. Key word: Cardiorespiratory fitness, skin folds, body fatness, adolescents

Purpose: The primary purpose of this study is to examine underprivileged students’ endeavours towards achieving academic success. It specifically aims to understand how poverty affects the students' performance in school, students' way to fight poverty in pursuing education; and motivation to achieve their goals. Approach/Methodology/Design: The study is qualitative and utilized a descriptive research design. A semi-structured questionnaire was used and was composed of three focus questions. The respondents’ answers were transcribed and categorized using analytical coding to explore the students’ experience in coping with hardships towards achieving academic success despite poverty. This study was conducted in Dagohoy National High School, Poblacion, Dagohoy, Bohol, Philippines, for the school year 2019-2020. Homogeneous-Convenience sampling was utilized to select respondents for the study. Findings: Poverty has made a significant impact on students who belong to the low-class families. This affects the emotional part of the students while studying. Failure to comply with School Requirements and increasing rates of absenteeism are also among the problems poverty causes. However, students have perseverance, determination, and self-motivation to win over poverty. They are so eager to strive harder and achieve their goals because they want to pay off their families' struggles to raise them and send them to school. They also perceived poverty as their motivation as they were challenged by it in achieving their dreams. Practical Implications: The study will contribute positively to understanding unprivileged students' endeavours towards achieving academic success. The results of the study will give better explanation to the unprivileged students’ source of motivation and inspiration towards success. Originality/value: This study addresses one of the crucial problems in the society-the unprivileged. It examines the situation of the underprivileged students, describing their difficult experiences while continuing education, reflecting the effects of poverty on their school performance and their motivation to move forward despite the challenges.

Abstract Background and aims Adolescence is a period of physical, psychological and socio-cultural transformation, but also of curiosity, experimentation and acquisition. It is mainly during adolescence that people are introduced to the use of legitimate psychoactive substances, such as alcohol and tobacco, as well as illicit substances such as cannabis. We aimed to determine the prevalence of smoking among high school students in the region of Sousse and to specify its characteristics. Methods We conducted a cross-sectional study in two public schools in the governorate of Sousse during the 2017/2018 school year. The data were collected by anonymous self-administered questionnaire, then processed and analyzed using the SPSS software version 20. Results A total of 294 students were included. The sex ratio was 0.78 with mean age of 17.03 years (standard deviation = 1.51). Results showed that 27.6% of students reported having already tasted tobacco. Among them, 61.8% of their parents did not know they were smoking. 17.28% started before the age of 14. Only 26% of them tried to stop but failed. Boys smoked twice as much as girls (p = 0.001). In addition, 63% of young smokers used chicha, 48.1% drank alcohol, and 35.8% used cannabis at least once. Conclusions The prevalence of smoking among these adolescents is worrying. Knowledge of related factors is important for program planning to prevent the tobacco epidemic in schools. Key messages Adolescence is the age of initiation for addictive substance use specially, Tobacco use. Knowledge of related factors is important for prevention program planning.

This single site case study examined influences on student success, as perceived by twelve selected sixth grade students (ages 11-12), at a mid-West U.S. middle school (grades 6-8). Using a strengths-based positivist approach, it examined how and why participants thought they had been academically successful during their first year of secondary school. Analysis of the resulting student-centered narrative applied elements of ecological systems theory to determine home, school, and community influences on academic success. This study reinforces the importance of listening to students, recognising the role student voice can have to improve the overall teaching and learning environment.

Background: The novel coronavirus (COVID-19) is begun in Wuhan, China, and has spread worldwide, resulting in a large number of hospitalizations and deaths. To the best of our knowledge, the study about the mental health status (depression, anxiety, and stress) among high school students during COVID- 19 has not been performed in Iran. Objective: This study was performed to investigate rates of anxiety, depression, and stress among high school students during the pandemic of COVID-19. Method: This cross-sectional study was performed among high school students (12-18 years) from 30 April until 1 June 2020, in Hamadan City, west of Iran. In total, 2852 students contributed to the present study. Depression Anxiety and Stress Scale 21 (DASS-21) was used in this study. Statistical analyses were conducted in STATA 14 with a significant level of 0.05. Results: The present study showed that although stress status was normal among most high school students (70.3%), but the status of anxiety and depression was high. The boys had reported a higher proportion of normal status of depression (51.62% vs. 44.97%), anxiety (31.71% vs. 26.91%), and stress (77.66% vs. 66.10%) compared to the girls. Also, students in grades 7-9 had reported more percentage of normal status in all three dimensions of stress, anxiety, and depression. Conclusion: These findings suggest that as rates of depression and anxiety are high, school-age children may benefit from policymakers and other authorities’ active role.

The notion of performance is the key word of our study. This notion is today at the heart of debates that shake schools. On the one hand the latter must provide quality education and on the other hand schools are subject to the obligation to report to the citizen. These two constraints result in the need to identify the individual and contextual variables of students' academic performance i.e. the factors likely to lead to academic success. We are aware in our study that we cannot be content with a single determinant as long as the analysis of school performance is multifactorial. The purpose of this article is to present in the first part the individual and contextual variables that have already been the subject of the research. And in the second part to determine the impact of these variables on the academic performance of a sample representing 11425 pupils of students enrolled in the third year of college education during the 2016-2017 school year, reporting to the management Provincial of Sidi Bernoussi of the Academy Casa Settat region. The data collected is studied using the SPSS software.
