Chekhov as a writer and as a doctor

Author(s):
Roman Petrovich Stepchenkov

In his short autobiography, Anton Pavlovich wrote that after a great number of years, although he could not remember what exactly had prompted him at one time to choose the profession of a doctor and enter the medical faculty of the university, he knew for sure that subsequently he never regretted his choice. In his letters, he even wrote that he considered literature to be his wife, while medicine was his mistress, and when he got tired of one, he turned his gaze to the other. «Perhaps this is immoral to some extent,» he wrote, «but I never get bored. Why not chase two hares if there were hounds!» Chekhov began his medical practice in the Zvenigorod district of the Moscow province. He was lucky to have as his mentor an outstanding physician P. A. Arkhangelsky, whose fame as a practicing therapist was so great that young doctors from almost all over the country came to him to gain experience. The eminent doctor was very pleased with the success of the talented young man, and even left him solely for the entire hospital as a practicing doctor. Such activity helped Chekhov not only gain invaluable medical experience, but also formed the basis of many of his works, such as «The Runaway», «Village Doctors», «On Official Duty». Anton Chekhov devoted the first half of the day to receiving patients, and in the afternoon, he took part in autopsies, acted as a medical expert, and consulted especially difficult and controversial cases of diseases.

«WHITE RUSSIAN» DOCTORS IN CYPRUS: THE FATE OF SIX GRADUATES OF KHARKOV IMPERIAL UNIVERSITY (PART II)Ağayev E., Rusanov C. The article discusses the fate of physicians who graduated the medical faculty of Kharkov University before 1917 and immigrated to Cyprus in 1920. For three of them the island became the second home. Apart from Pavel Smitten (we described his biography in the first part of the article), physicians Mark Freiman and Boris Vroblevskiy decided to live and work in Cyprus. The former had medical practice there, though in Kharkov he was engaged in real estate and became famous due to excavations of the city catacombs. Vroblevskiy worked in hospitals, supervised by Smitten, and after the death of the latter independently, until 1956.Three of the physicians were unable to find work in Cyprus, and in 1922 the British authority moved them from the refugee camps to Balcans. Sergey Kozentsov served as a surgeon in Kharkov Red Cross hospital for many years. Mkrtych Arevshatiants before immigrating worked in Tiflis City hospital; Alexey Ivanov served as a country doctor in Ukraine. After the departure from Cyprus Kozentsov lived in Dubrovnik, where he died in 1942. There is no information on the fate of the other two doctors who left Cyprus.Keywords: Alexey Ivanov; Boris Vroblevskiy; Cyprus; graduates of medical faculty; Kharkov University; Mark Freiman; Mkrtych Avevshatiants; physicians; Sergey Kozentsov; White emigration.«БЕЛЫЕ РУССКИЕ» ВРАЧИ НА КИПРЕ: СУДЬБЫ ШЕСТИ ВЫПУСКНИКОВ ИМПЕРАТОРСКОГО ХАРЬКОВСКОГО УНИВЕРСИТЕТА (ЧАСТЬ II)Агаев Э. ABSTRACTThis study aims to test the effectiveness of learning through a methodology with ICT over the traditional method. The methodology used in the research is characterized as a prospective study (planned); Experimental cutting with pretest and posttest; and using different techniques and tools for collecting information. This study was conducted through a questionnaire to 77 students Grade of "Early Childhood Education" and "Primary Education" of the University CEU Cardenal Herrera, Castellon. Initially the students completed a questionnaire (pretest) and then they were divided into two groups; in one group was imparted a traditional session and in the other group a session with ICT tools, on a new unknown content in both groups. After analyzing the results it can be concluded that students acquire better knowledge of traditional form. This may be because almost all students have received teaching (pre-university) by the traditional method, which may influence their styles learning. There is also a gender difference, as there is a variation of this variable for the ICT method and the traditional method.RESUMENEl presente estudio pretende comprobar la eficacia del aprendizaje mediante una metodología en la que se utilizan las tecnologías frente al método tradicional. Contacto principal: [email protected]

Although St. Basil did not live 50 years, the topic of the old age appears in his works quite often. On the other hand, it is clear that Basil does not discuss this issue in one particular work or in the longer argumentation. The fragmentary statements about old age can be found in almost all his works, but most of them can be found in the correspondence of Basil. In this paper we present the most important ad the most interesting aspect of teaching of Basil the Great. As these certificates show that the bishop of Caesarea looked at the old age maturely, rationally estimated passage of time, which very often makes a man different. He experienced it, for example as a spiritual and physical suffering, which often were connected with his person. He saw a lot of aspect of the old age, especially its advantages – spiritual maturity and wisdom. What is more, he pointed also to passage of time, which leads a man to eternity, which should be prepared to, regardless how old he is. In his opinion fear is not seen opinions of St. Basil present really Christian way of thinking, well-balanced and calm.

Abstract: Anxiety is experienced by almost all people around the world including new medical students. New medical student experiences a lot of stressor include examination which cause anxiety to occur and may affect their exam results. Somehow, there are a few study found to date that has investigate this phenomenon. In Sam Ratulangi University, which is the nearest medical faculty, there is no research for such phenomenon. This study aims to investigate the relationship between anxiety and new medical student’s achievement on their last exam in Medical Faculty of Sam Ratulangi University. This is an analytic research using a survey method with census as the option of sampling. However, the research samples are who meet inclusion category and not in the exclusion category. The nearest samples are in Sam Ratulangi University who are given questioners to measure their anxiety by using Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale (HARS) before their exam and to collect their sosiodemograpic data as well. There is no significant relationship between anxiety and their last exam results (p=0,602>0,05), but there is a significant relationship between gender and anxiety (p=0,005<0,05) with odds ratio 2,91. According to anxiety test results, 267 of 298 grade-1 medical students (89,6%) present an anxiety and the most prevalence anxiety level is mild anxiety with total 177 people (59,4%). In conclusion, almost all grade-1 new medical students in Medical Faculty of Sam Ratulangi University experienced anxiety with mild anxiety as the most prevalence anxiety level. There is no significant relationship between anxiety and their last exam results, but there is a significant relationship between gender and anxiety with almost 3 times for new female medical students experiencing anxiety than new male medical students. Further research is needed to investigate coping strategies and defense mechanisms which may be used to cope with their anxiety. Keywords: Anxiety, Exam, Medical Student

Abstract Context Apo A-I Leu75Pro is a rare hereditary form of amyloidosis that mainly involves the kidney, the liver, and the testis. Objective To define the characteristics of organ damage and testis impairment in the largest cohort collected to date of men with Apo A-I Leu75Pro amyloidosis. Design, Setting, and Patients Retrospective study from a prospectively collected database of 129 male subjects >18 years with Apo A-I Leu75Pro amyloidosis from a reference center at the University Hospital of Brescia, Italy. Main outcome measures We evaluated liver and renal function, scrotal ultrasound, reproductive hormone levels, testis biopsy, hypogonadal symptoms, and fertility. Results Progressive involvement of testis, kidney, and liver was observed in 96/129 (74.4%) cases. Testis impairment was found in 88/129 patients (68.2%), liver in 59 (45.7%) and renal in 50 (38.8%). Testis damage was often the first manifestation of the disease and the only dysfunction in 30% of younger patients (<38 years). Testicular involvement was characterized mainly by primary (73/88 patients, 83.0%) and subclinical (8/88, 9.1%) hypogonadism. Almost all (85/88, 96.6%) also had high follicle-stimulating hormone, suggesting a primary global damage of endocrine and spermatogenic functions, and 30% of them did not conceive. Macroorchidism was found in 53/88 (60.2%) patients, especially in men <54 years (30/33, 90.9%). Apo A-I amyloid deposits were found in Sertoli cells, germinal epithelium, and vessel walls. Conclusion In men with Apo A-I Leu75Pro amyloidosis, testicular involvement is the hallmark of the disease, characterized by global primary testicular dysfunction and macroorchidism due to amyloid deposits.

In this work we analyzed the mapping of Sustainable Development Goals in the curricular units of the undergraduate courses of the School of Social Sciences at the University of Évora. Of a total of 449 curricular units, only 374 had students enrolled in 2020/2021. The data presented refer to the 187 course units that had Sustainable Development Goals in addition to SDG4 (Quality Education) assigned to all the course units. Considering the set of curricular units, the results showed that the most mentioned objectives were those related to Gender Equality (SDG 5), Reduced Inequalities (SDG 10), Decent Work and Economic Growth (SDG 8) and Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions (SDG 16). Regarding the differences between the departments, which are also distinct scientific areas, we have observed that the Departments of Economics and Management had more objectives related to labor and economic growth, while the other departments mentioned more objectives related to inequalities, gender or other.

Descriptions of larvae of Procladius denticulatus, Procladius culiciformis, Procladius freemani, and Procladius bellus collected from Yellowknife Bay (lat., 62°25′; long., 114°20′) are given. Procladius denticulatus was separated from the other species by its large size, a character which always proved distinctive. Procladius culiciformis and P. freemani were separated from one another through several measurements including those of the basal antennal segment and the basal palpal segment. Almost all characters of the head were useful in distinguishing the much smaller P. bellus from the other species.
