A study was undertaken to analyse and compare the nutrient content of some commercial fish feeds available in Bangladesh through chemical analysis. The commercial fish feeds collected from the markets were Quality Feeds Ltd. (QF), Aftab Feed Products Ltd. (AF), Saudi-Bangla Fish Feed Ltd. (SBF), Paragon Feeds Ltd. (PF) and AIT Feeds Ltd. (AIT). Proximate composition such as moisture, crude protein, crude lipid, ash, fibre and NFE (nitrogen free extract), and some of the macro minerals such as Ca, P, Na, K and S were analysed. In general, there was no large variation between analysed and company declared nutrient contents of different feeds except the protein and lipid content of some feeds. However, two pangas feeds such as Surovi (nursery and grower) of QF had much lower protein content (27.57% and 20.24%) compared to 32% and 25% protein value respectively declared by the company. Similarly, large (more than 5%) differences between the analysed and company declared protein content was observed in case of carp starter and grower feeds of QF. On the other hand, analysed protein content of all feeds of SBF was more than that declared by the company except for special shrimp feed which had slightly lower (1%) protein compared to the company declared value. Pangas feeds (grower I and II) of PF had about 3% lower protein than the company declared value. The analysed lipid contents of all feeds were higher than the company declared values except nursery feeds of QF which had about 1-2% less lipid content compared to the company declared value. Fibre contents of different feeds analysed were much higher (3-5%) than the company declared values. The analysed mineral contents in all the feeds were higher than the recommended mineral requirement for fishes. The results of the study showed that on the basis of nutrient content feeds from Saudi-Bangla Fish Feed Ltd. is better than other feeds.

An experiment was conducted to evaluate the effects of Pangasius pond sediment on the nutrient uptake by para-grass (Brachiaria mutica) during the period from March to October, 2011 in a Pangasius farm, Dhanikhola, Trishal, Mymensingh. Initially soil chemistry of Pangasius pond sediment and para-grass producing virgin soil was analyzed at the laboratory. The fodder was cultivated at various level of inorganic fertilizer with Pangasius pond sediment having three replications in each treatment. The size of each replication was 25 m2 (5m×5m). The fodder was harvested at the pre-flowering stage (45 days after transplantation). After first cutting, experimental plot was irrigated, and again after 45 days of first cutting second cutting was done. After proper collection and preparation the para-grass samples and rice straw, their proximate composition analysis was done. The nutrient content of para-grass was also compared with rice-straw being used as dairy feed. The analytical results indicated that the nutrients content of Pangasius pond sediment was higher than the virgin soil which was the stimulating factor for para-grass growth and production. The basic nutrients such as crude lipid and protein content of para-grass were found increasing from first to second sampling. However, crude lipid and protein of para-grass at second sampling was found much higher than those of rice straw. Application of Pangasius pond sediment as alternative source of fertilizer enriched nutrient content of para-grass much higher than those of rice straw. Therefore, it could be argued that higher level of lipid and protein content of para-grass is the stimulating factor to dairy cattle production under integrated aquaculture–fodder grass production using Pangasius pond sediment.Bang. Periods of unfavorable storing conditions can lead to changes in the quality of fish feeds, as well as the development of relevant mycotoxins. In the present study, a commercial fish feed was stored under defined conditions for four weeks. The main findings indicate that even storing fish feeds under unsuitable conditions for a short duration leads to a deterioration in quality. Mycotoxin and fungal contamination were subsequently analyzed. These investigations confirmed that different storage conditions can influence the presence of fungi and mycotoxins on fish feed. Notably, ochratoxin A (OTA) was found in samples after warm (25 °C) and humid (>60% relative humidity) treatment. This confirms the importance of this compound as a typical contaminant of fish feed and reveals how fast this mycotoxin can be formed in fish feed during storage.

Taste is expected to represent a food's nutrient content. The objective was to investigate whether taste acts as nutrient-sensor, within the context of the current diet, which is high in processed foods. Intensities of the five basic tastes of fifty commonly consumed foods were rated by nineteen subjects (aged 21·0 (sd 1·7) years, BMI 21·5 (sd 2·0) kg/m2). Linear regression was used to test associations between taste and nutrient contents. Food groups based on taste were identified using cluster analysis; nutrient content was compared between food groups, using ANOVA. Sweetness was associated with mono- and disaccharides (R2 0·45, P < 0·01). Saltiness and savouriness were correlated, with r 0·92 (P < 0·01) and both were associated with Na (both: R2 0·33, P < 0·01) and protein (R2 0·27, P < 0·01 and R2 0·33, P < 0·01, respectively). Cluster analysis indicated four food groups: neutral, salty and savoury, sweet–sour and sweet foods. Mono- and disaccharide content was highest in sweet foods (P < 0·01). In salty and savoury foods, protein content (P = 0·01 with sweet–sour foods, not significant with neutral or sweet foods) and Na content (P < 0·05) were the highest. Associations were more pronounced in raw and moderately processed foods, than in highly processed foods. The findings suggest that sweetness, saltiness and savouriness signal nutrient content, particularly for simple sugars, protein and Na. In highly processed foods, however, the ability to sense nutrient content based on taste seems limited.

A popular hypothesis for the noted steady decline in the population of Steller sea lions, Eumetopias jubatus (Schreber, 1776), in the regions from Prince William Sound through the Aleutian Islands relates to their nutritional status. Sea lion diets appear to have shifted from primarily small schooling fatty fishes to low-fat fish such as walleye pollock, Theragra chalcogramma (Pallas, 1814). We examined the seasonal changes in proximate nutrients of pollock collected in the Bering Sea. Mean energy density (dry mass) of pollock peaked in October then declined and remained low throughout winter. Energy recovery occurred in the summer months with strong recovery observed in female fish caught in July. Contrary to whole fish carcass energy contents, both total protein and moisture contents were at their highest levels in winter (January) when total crude lipid content was at its lowest (p < 0.05). This trend gradually declined to its lowest levels in the fall when lipid content was high. The decline in total lipids during winter seasons appeared to parallel gonad development during the prespawning period. Sex differences in energy densities were not found. Proximate analysis data for moisture, protein, ash, and lipid content also did not show any significant variation between males and females. Protein digestibility of pollock was higher (p < 0.05) in the summer than in the spring, but not different for winter or fall. We concluded that the nutrient content of walleye pollock may have some impact on the Steller sea lions that feed on them, particularly the energetic value that appears to be low during important feeding periods for this marine mammal.

Background: Lablab Bean had been considered as an excellent source of protein (20-25%) with it’s two different groups, like Wal (highly fibrous) and Papdi (less fibrous). Cooking alters the level of nutrient content and as well as the antinutrient content and based on this concept the following experiment had been carried out. Methods: The study was carried out in Navsari Agricultural University, Gujarat, India, in 2016-17. Two different groups of Indian bean (Lablab purpureus L.) including Wal group (Guj.W.1, Guj.W.2, 125-36, NIBD-15-05, NIBD-15-10) and Papdi group (GNIB-21, NIBD-15-09, NIBD-15-10, NIBD-14-01, NIBD-14-04) were analyzed for their nutrients and anti-nutritional contents for raw and cooked (boiling) vegetables. Result: Papdi group was proved to be comparatively rich in some nutrient contents like ascorbic acid, flavonoid, Fe, Mn whereas Wal was found to be rich in the other nutrient contents like crude fibre, carbohydrate, S, Zn, Cu, â carotene etc. Both groups performed well for antioxidant activities and protein content. Hence, it was difficult to detect the particular group distinctly and reported that Wal was found to be comparatively nutritionally rich after cooking.

Pumpkin is one of an agricultural commodity which is rich in nutrients. Pumpkin also has high vitamin and  mineral contents including betacarotene, vitamin C and vitamin B1. Pumpkin flour  is suitable to be added into food products in order to increase the nutrient contents. The study aimed to know the effect of pumpkin flour substitution on the chemical characteristic of steamed brownies. The pumpkin flour substitution were 0%,20%,40%,60%, 80%, and 100% based on wheat flour weight. The result showed that the pumpkin flour substitution significantly increased the moisture contents, ash contents, and carbohydrate contents of steamed  brownies. The highest fat content, protein content, and carbohydrate content showed in those of 20% pumpkin flour substitusion. It contained  29,43% of fat content, 8,65% of protein content, and 8,65% of carbohydrate content, respectively.


Changes in the nutrient contents of the asparagus (Asparagus officinalis, L.) spears were determined in order to investigate the influence of the blanching, pressure cooking and microwaving on spears. Standard AOAC methods were used for the analysis of parameters selected for the study. The data obtained during the study revealed a significant (p>0.05) decrease in the content of fat, dietary fibre, carbohydrate and ash in all the samples. However, pressure cooking resulted in increase of 1 % in fat content in the sample. Moisture and protein content increased to a level of 13%-15% and 6% to 18 % respectively in all the processed samples. Results revealed that percentage reduction of nutrients was least in blanched sample as compared to pressure cooking and microwaving. The present research suggests blanching as the most suitable technique for processing of asparagus spears for optimum nutritional advantage.

The increasing costs of commercial fish feeds have made it imperative for most small-scale pond fish farmers in Ghana to resort to the use of alternative feed types to feed cultured fish. Some fish farmers rotate commercial feeds with farm-made types. This study was carried out to investigate the production and use of farm-made fish feeds by small-scale pond fish farmers in five major pond fish farming Regions (Ashanti, Brong-Ahafo, Central, Volta and Western) in Ghana. Of the 147 farmers interviewed in all the five regions, 86 farmers used farm-made feeds of which 37 depended solely on farm-made feeds whilst 49 used both commercial and farm-made feeds. Farm-made feeds were produced using locally available ingredients and the most used oneswere groundnut bran (92%), fish meal (90%), wheat bran (74%) and maize (60%). The farmers did not follow appropriate and standardized feed formulation protocol during farm-made fish feed production. Hence, farm-made fish feeds produced by all farmers interviewed were found not to be nutritionally balanced. There is the need for small-scale pond fish farmers in Ghana to be trained in formulation and production of nutritionally balanced and cost-effective fish feeds so as to increase fish production through aquaculture in the country.

An experiment was carried out to comparative analysis of nutritional quality of different fish feed from different feed dealers and industries in greater Noakhali region and to compare the values with those provided by the manufacturers. The feed samples were collected from different feed industries and dealer's shop of these region. Feed samples were collected during 10 August to 5 September, 2016. The collected feed samples were stored and analyzed in the Fish Nutrition Laboratory of the Department of Aquaculture in the Faculty of Fisheries, Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU), Mymensingh for proximate composition (moisture, ash, crude protein, crude lipid, crude fiber, carbohydrate) following standard methods. Results showed that there was significant variation between analyzed and company provided nutritive values of different feeds. Some feed samples have low moisture level (difference 0.7 to 3.3%). Ash content of the experimental samples also show a variety of results compared to their labeled composition. Only some feed have more values to the company provided values, such as, Mega starter (12.13%) and Bengal grower (12.75) proportion with 12%. Some feed contains more difference range of 6.01% more than labeled values is RP feed (20.01%). Maximum feed samples had lower crude protein (difference 0.05 to 4.65%) than the company provided protein values. However, only crude protein of Bengal finisher (29.95%) and Aftab grower (28.07%) feeds were found to be almost same to the company provided nutritive values (30% and 28%). The lipid, ash and carbohydrates contents of the experimental samples also have a difference range. The highest lipid values are available in Provita starter (9.76%) and lowest values containing feed Setu grower (4.33%). The highest carbohydrates content in the feed Provita starter (36.84%). The findings of this study demonstrated that low quality commercial fish feeds were supplied to the fish farmers by majority of feed companies. Honey is one of the herbal supplements for increasing body health. The nutrient content in honey products can be reduced due to its processing, packing, storage, and industrial process. This study aimed to analyze the characteristic of honey and some of its nutrient contents of 5 honey samples that disperse among the society. This study was conducted from March to September 2019 in the Ministry of Industry Centre for Agro-based Industry Laboratory, Bogor, East Java. Honey samples were obtained from some wholesale supermarkets around the Jakarta area. Total carbohydrate and energy testings were using IK 5.4.5 method. Water content, diastase enzyme activity, hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) content, and acidity tests were using the Indonesian National Standard  (SNI) procedure 3545 2013. HPLC method was used to test sucrose, glucose, and fructose, while AOAC 999.11 (9.1.09.2005 method was used to test Cu, Zn, and Fe content. Total carotenoid and flavonoid content were determined using spectrophotometry method.  The result revealed the characteristic of honey samples in this study, including the range of pH (3.56-4.16), water (17-22.9%), ashes (0,07-0,59), acidity (7.76-38.3 ml N NaOH 1/kg) and HMF (122-812 mg/kg) content as well as diastase enzyme activity (1.11-17.2 DN). Fructose, glucose, sucrose and reducing sugar content showed were, respectively, 21.5-39.3 gr/100 gr, 25.2-31.4 gr/100 gr, 0.5-1.75 gr/100 gr, and 58.4-71.2%. Honey samples contained 309-334 kal/100 gr of energy, 76.8-81.9% of carbohydrate, 0.03-0.39%, of protein and 0.10-0.65% of fat. Moreover, their mineral contents observed were 0.03-0.66 mg/kg of Cu, 0.09-3.13 mg/kg of Zn, and 1.59-20.1 mg/kg of Fe. Finally, total flavonoid and carotenoid of honey samples were, respectively, 0.02-0.07 %(b/b) and 0.05-0.64 mg/kg.
