There is a connection between the behaviour of throwing waste into the river with the community perspective about river. The behaviour of people throwing waste into the river assosiated with the lack of availability of facilities dispose of waste in the area and looked at the river as an object or place that is easiest to throw garbage into the river. Related to these problems, this research describes the community who doing the social movement in waste management a long the river, as well as analyzing patterns of community organizing in waste management.The approach used is a qualitative method of data collection techniques consisted of observation, interviews and focus group discussions. Research shows that the government has made efforts through the program "Clean Cikapundung River", and waste management efforts, sediment transport and manufacture kirmir on a riverbank to prevent abrasion. However Cikapundung still dirty and full of trash. To overcome these problems, there are many communities who awakened and stirred to make an effort in order Cikapundung no longer become dumping grounds. The movement to strive for existence of the river can be used again as an important source of livelihood for the people. Community was formed to instill public awareness of the environment, especially rivers, in the form of an appeal and a call to people not to throw garbage into the river and do the cleaning and arrangement along the river so that the river Cikapundung clean and free of trash based on solidarity and mutual assistance. The social movements showed public awareness to make changes to their environment, especially the problem of waste in the river.

Abstract Introduction: The Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) has been touted as a major breakthrough towards achieving equal rights for persons with disabilities. The promulgation of the convention provided clear guidelines for signatory countries to revise their legislation as well as to formulate policies that will take into consideration the needs of persons with disabilities. As Cameroon is a signatory to the convention, it is expected that disability-friendly policies have been implemented to enhance the living conditions of persons with disabilities. This study examined, from the perspectives of participants, the life experiences of persons with disabilities in the Buea Municipality 7 years after Cameroon signed the CRPD. Methods: The study adopted a qualitative method, involving focus-group discussions with 36 participants from three disability groups: hearing impaired, visually impaired, and physically impaired. Findings: The study found that persons with disabilities in the Buea Municipality faced many challenges in their daily endeavors. These challenges are a result of a lack of inclusive policies, leading to their exclusion from social and economic activities such as education, employment, and healthcare. Conclusion: Although the study is limited in scope, the findings suggest that persons with disabilities in the Buea Municipality were yet to benefit from the CRPD. It is, therefore, suggested that the government of Cameroon should formulate inclusive policies to address the numerous challenges facing persons with disabilities in the Buea Municipality.

Introduction: The prevalence of HIV/AIDS is alarmingly increasing. Considering the experiences of HIV/AIDS-positive patients, experiences of the women who took HIV/AIDS from their husbands –marital relationships- can be different. The purpose of this study was to describe the challenges of these women. Methods: This qualitative study was conducted using focus group discussions with 10 women who took HIV/AIDS from their husbands. All interviews were recorded, transcribed verbatim, and analyzed by thematic analysis. Results: Data analysis showed that participants experienced a kind of compulsive social isolation. They could not interact with anyone except their parents. They suffered from social stigma because the disease is associated with the illicit sex label. From data analysis, three main themes of fear, marital despondency, and stigma emerged. Conclusion: The concerns and challenges of women who took HIV/AIDS from their marital relationships revealed that these women were exposed to the social strains because of having HIV / AIDS and stigma of illegitimate sexual relationships. In this regard, public awareness should be raised about this disadvantaged group of the community. To hit this target, individuals should be provided with the required information through schools as well as broadcasting and social media. Implementation of the counseling visits can create  psychological and social support for these traumatized group and their families.

One of the social problems that often arise in urban areas is a waste problem. Waste problem is basically caused by many things, such as the lack of good waste management, the behavior of a society that is still low in maintaining hygiene and environmental health, as well as the growing population, thus adding of waste produced by households. Waste management in the region, will involve communities, government, NGOs and the private sector. But in Trenggalek, the absence of private parties who participated in addressing rural waste. Waste management in Trenggalek handled by the government and the people who lead the waste pelayananaan less than optimal or not in accordance with existing regulations. The aim of this study was to assess the extent to which institutional role in waste management in Trenggalek, in creating a healthy environment, berhindar of soil and water pollution caused by garbage. The analysis in this study was performed using Pearson correlation analysis, crosstab analysis and scale analysis. Results from this study were 1) Waste in Trenggalek differentiate into 2 (two), namely organic and inorganic waste, the most dominant is the leaf litter and food waste amounted to 81.30%. 2) Institute for waste management there are only two (2) institutions, namely the government and society. 3) Waste management in Trenggalek done by way of being transported by a janitor, burned and dumped into the river. 4) The role of each institution shows that government plays an important role in waste management in Trenggalek. 5) Based on the analysis of the correlation between institutional waste management indicates that the government has a weak relationship with the community, so that waste management is less than optimal.

This study was designed to mirror the deep issues behind the crisis in the Niger Delta region, using the oil exploration of Ogoniland as the case study and proffering possible solutions on how best to combat the identified problems. To achieve this aim, focus group discussions, unstructured interviews and oral testimonies were employed for the collection of data; and data analysis were carried out using simple coding for recognition, transcription from the local dialect to English Language, rewriting and interpretations. The results revealed that the people’s expectation from the Government and Shell Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria (SPDC) has not been met; illegal refineries and other criminal vices are now fully in operation in Ogoniland. The people blamed the Shell Petroleum Development Company, the Federal Government, some of their corrupt chiefs, Movement for the Survival of the Ogoni People (MOSOP) and some of the community youths for the problems in the communities. However, the Ogoni people believed that the full implementation of the United Nations Environmental Programmes (UNEP) report on Ogoniland and the Ogoni Bill of Rights will ameliorate all their sufferings. It was recommended that SPDC should avoid reaching agreements with the traditional rulers and politicians from Ogoni on projects bordering on development of the land that excludes the people. It was also recommended that SPDC should carry out town hall meetings, focus group discussions or even distribute questionnaires in the local communities in Ogoni communities to ascertain the best solutions from the local people (who are the majority) rather than taking only the decisions from Ogoni leaders, which may not be the consensus opinion of the people.

This article aims to make a preliminary and general observation on some of the influences of Shi’ism on the Malay Muslims in Malaysia since post Iranian revolution in 1979 onwards. This research emphasizes on the impact of the Iranian revolution in 1979 on the Malay Muslim society of Malaysia and the effort of some to develop the Shi’ite community in the Malay Sunnite majority. Cases in focus are in the field of education, social and politics. The researcher employed the qualitative method that includes textual analysis of the materials related to Shi’ism, interviews, and focus group discussions (FGD) with those who sympathize with the Shiite groups. Among the findings are the Malay sect of Shi’ism emerged officially after the Iranian Revolution in 1979. After the revolution, many Malay students were sent to pursue their studies at the Republic of Iran. This led to the formation of Malay Shi’ites organizations that went in line with the aspiration of the Iranian Revolution. It also to some extent influenced some of the social activities of Malay Muslims of Malaysia. Keywords: Schism, Shi’ism, Sunnism, Malay, Islam.   Abstrak Artikel ini bertujuan membuat satu pemerhatian awal dan umum keatas orang-orang Melayu Islam di Malaysia pasca revolusi Iran pada tahun 1979 dan selepasnya. Kajian ini menekankan impak revolusi Iran 1979 ke atas masyarakat Melayu Islam di Malaysia dan usaha sebahagian mereka untuk membentuk komuniti Shi‘ah di dalam masyarakat Melayu yang majoritinya Sunni. Kes-kes yang dikaji adalah dalam bidang pendidikan, sosial dan politik. Para pengkaji menggunakan metod kualitatif termasuk analisa tekstual terhadap bahan-bahan yang berkaitan fahaman Shi‘ah, temubual dan perbincangan kumpulan berfokus (FGD) dengan kumpulan-kumpulan yang bersimpati dengan fahaman tersebut. Di antara penemuan-penemuan dari kajian ini adalah kum-pulan Melayu Shi’ah muncul secara rasmi selepas revolusi Iran 1979. Selepas revolusi itu, ramai pelajar-pelajar Melayu Sunni telah dihantar menyambung pengajian mereka di republik Iran. Hal yang demikian menjurus kepada pembentukan organisasi-organisasi yang selari dengan aspirasi revolusi Iran. Dalam beberapa aspek, ia juga mempengaruhi aktiviti-aktiviti sosial orang-orang Melayu Islam di Malaysia. Kata Kunci: Skete, Shī‘ah, Sunni, Melayu, Islam.

Health is the basic right for everybody, therefore every citizen is entitled to get the health care. In enforcing the regulation for Jaringan Kesehatan Nasional (National Health Supports), it is heavily influenced by the foreign interests. Economically, this program does not reduce the people’s burdens, on the contrary, it will increase them. This means the health supports in which should place the government as the guarantor of the public health, but the people themselves that should pay for the health care. In the realization of the health support the are elements against the Syariah principles. Indonesian Muslim Religious Leaders (MUI) only say that the BPJS Kesehatan (Sosial Support Institution for Health) does not conform with the syariah. The society is asked to register and continue the participation in the program of Social Supports Institution for Health. The best solution is to enforce the mechanism which is in accordance with the syariah principles. The establishment of BPJS based on syariah has to be carried out in cooperation from the elements of Social Supports Institution (BPJS), Indonesian Muslim Religious (MUI), Financial Institution Authorities, National Social Supports Council, Ministry of Health, and Ministry of Finance. Accordingly, the Social Supports Institution for Helath (BPJS Kesehatan) based on syariah principles could be obtained and could became the solution of the polemics in the society.

Kulon Progo Regency is one of the districts that has many innovations, one of which is community empowerment in collaboration with a modern shop abbreviated as the shop name owned by the people (tomira). This research was motivated by the achievements of the Kulon Progo district government in carrying out development and innovation in the development of the Kulon Progo region by fully involving the Kulon Progo district community through community empowerment. This initiative was taken by the government of Kulon Progo Regency to improve community empowerment and protect the people of Kulon Progo Regency from various economic threats. Considering that in the past few years many modern shops have mushroomed in each district/city, so this is what makes Kulon Progo Regency move quickly to empower the community by collaborating between MSMEs or cooperative with modern shops. This study uses a qualitative method which case study approach. With the empowerment that has been done, the original products of Kulon Progo Regency or local products can be traded in modern stores so that local products in Kulon Progo Regency can compete with national products in these modern stores. The existence of such cooperation will indirectly improve the image of Kulon Progo Regency and lift the original products of Kulon Progo Regency. The lifting of the original products of Kulon Progo Regency will have a positive impact on the community, where indirectly the economy of the community will increase so that there will be prosperity for the community. Kabupaten Kulon Progo adalah salah satu kabupaten yang memiliki banyak inovasi, salah satunya adalah pemberdayaan masyarakat bekerja sama dengan toko modern disingkat nama toko yang dimiliki oleh masyarakat (tomira). Penelitian ini dilatarbelakangi oleh pencapaian pemerintah kabupaten Kulon Progo dalam melakukan pengembangan dan inovasi dalam pengembangan wilayah Kulon Progo dengan melibatkan sepenuhnya masyarakat kabupaten Kulon Progo melalui pemberdayaan masyarakat. Inisiatif ini diambil oleh pemerintah Kabupaten Kulon Progo untuk meningkatkan pemberdayaan masyarakat dan melindungi masyarakat Kabupaten Kulon Progo dari berbagai ancaman ekonomi. Menimbang bahwa dalam beberapa tahun terakhir banyak toko-toko modern telah menjamur di setiap kabupaten/kota, jadi inilah yang membuat Kabupaten Kulon Progo bergerak cepat untuk memberdayakan masyarakat dengan berkolaborasi antara UMKM atau bekerjasama dengan toko-toko modern. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode penelitian kualitatif dengan pendekatan studi kasus, dengan metode yang digunakan adalah dokumentasi. Dengan pemberdayaan yang telah dilakukan, produk asli Kabupaten Kulon Progo atau produk lokal dapat diperdagangkan di toko modern sehingga produk lokal di Kabupaten Kulon Progo dapat bersaing dengan produk nasional di toko modern ini. Adanya kerjasama tersebut secara tidak langsung akan meningkatkan citra Kabupaten Kulon Progo dan mengangkat produk asli Kabupaten Kulon Progo. Pencabutan produk asli Kabupaten Kulon Progo akan berdampak positif bagi masyarakat, di mana secara tidak langsung perekonomian masyarakat akan meningkat sehingga akan ada kesejahteraan bagi masyarakat.

ABSTRAK: Inti pokok masalah dalam penelitian ini meliputi latar belakang gerakan sosial masyarakat Kampung Labaluba Desa Kontumere Kecamatan Kabawo Kabupaten Muna, Faktor-faktor yang mendorong gerakan sosial masyarakat Kampung Labaluba Desa Kontumere Kecamatan Kabawo Kabupaten Muna, proses gerakan sosial masyarakat Kampung Labaluba Desa Kontumere Kecamatan Kabawo Kabupaten Muna dan akibat gerakan sosial masyarakat Labaluba Desa Kontumere Kecamatan Kabawo Kabupaten Muna? Latar belakang gerakan sosial masyarakat Kampung Labaluba yaitu keadaan kampungnya yang hanya terdiri dari beberapa kepala keluarga tiap kampung dan jarak yang jauh masing-masing kampung membuat keadaan masyarakatnya sulit untuk berkomnikasi dan tiap kampung hanya terdiri dari lima sampai dengan tujuh kepala keluarga saja. Kampung ini letaknya paling timur pulau Muna terbentang dari ujung kota Raha sekarang sampai kampung Wakuru yang saat ini. Kondisi ini juga yang menjadi salah satu faktor penyebab kampung ini kurang berkembang baik dibidang ekonomi, sosial politik, pendidikan maupun di bidang kebudayaan. Keadaan ini diperparah lagi dengan sifat dan karakter penduduknya yang masih sangat primitif. Faktor yang mendorong adanya gerakan sosial masyarakat Kampung Labaluba Desa Kontumere Kecamatan Kabawo Kabupaten Muna adalah adanya ketidaksesuaian antara keinginan pemerintah setempat dan masyarakat yang mendiami Kampung Labaluba pada waktu itu. Sedangkan proses gerakan sosial masyarakat Kampung Labaluba Desa Kontumere Kecamatan Kabawo Kabupaten Muna bermula ketika pemerintah seolah memaksakan kehendaknya kepada rakyat yang menyebabkan rakyat tidak setuju dengan kebijakan tersebut. Akibat yang ditimbulkan dari adanya gerakan sosial masyarakat Kampung Labaluba Desa Kontumere Kecamatan Kabawo Kabupaten Muna terbagi dua yaitu akibat positif dan akibat negatif.Kata Kunci: Gerakan Sosial, Factor dan Dampaknya ABSTRACT: The main issues in this study include the background of the social movement of Labaluba Village, Kontumere Village, Kabawo Sub-District, Muna District, Factors that encourage social movements of Labaluba Kampung Sub-village, Kontumere Village, Kabawo Sub-District, Muna District, the social movement process of Labaluba Village, Kontumere Village, Kabawo Sub-District Muna Regency and due to Labaluba community social movements Kontumere Village Kabawo District Muna Regency? The background of the Labaluba Kampung community social movement is that the condition of the village consists of only a few heads of households per village and the distance of each village makes it difficult for the community to communicate and each village only consists of five to seven households. This village is located east of the island of Muna stretching from the edge of the city of Raha now to the current village of Wakuru. This condition is also one of the factors causing the village to be less developed in the economic, social political, educational and cultural fields. This situation is made worse by the very primitive nature and character of the population. The factor that motivated the existence of the social movement of Labaluba Village in Kontumere Village, Kabawo Subdistrict, Muna Regency was the mismatch between the wishes of the local government and the people who inhabited Labaluba Village at that time. While the process of social movements in Labaluba Village, Kontumere Village, Kabawo District, Muna Regency began when the government seemed to impose its will on the people, causing the people to disagree with the policy. The consequences arising from the existence of social movements in Labaluba Village, Kontumere Village, Kabawo District, Muna Regency are divided into two, namely positive and negative effects. Keywords: Social Movements, Factors and their Impacts

Literature on political vigilante groups has centred on the violence and conflict that emanate from their activities. This article approaches political vigilante groups as political actors who engage in political mobilisation and participation and therewith also contribute to nation state building. It explores how such groups participate in Ghana’s democratic governance and asks whether violence is an inevitable characteristic. The article builds on individual in-depth interviews and focus group discussions with political vigilante group members in Kumasi and Tamale in 2019. Findings show that political vigilante “youth” appeared to refer primarily to the social position attributed to non-elite groups in the political field. Political vigilante groups are multi-faceted in their organisational structures, membership, and activities both during electoral campaigns and during governing periods. While some groups revert to violence occasionally, the study concludes that political vigilante groups, in enabling different voices to be heard, are also contributing to democratic governance.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to analyse the 2016 elections for Police and Crime Commissioners (PCCs) and to compare them with those that took place in 2012. It seeks to evaluate the background of the candidates who stood for office in 2016, the policies that they put forward, the results of the contests and the implications of the 2016 experience for future PCC elections. Design/methodology/approach This paper is based around several key themes – the profile of candidates who stood for election, preparations conducted prior to the contests taking place, the election campaign and issues raised during the contests, the results and the profile of elected candidates. The paper is based upon documentary research, making particular use of primary source material. Findings The research establishes that affiliation to a political party became the main route for successful candidates in 2016 and that local issues related to low-level criminality will dominate the future policing agenda. It establishes that although turnout was higher than in 2012, it remains low and that further consideration needs to be devoted to initiatives to address this for future PCC election contests. Research limitations/implications The research focusses on the 2016 elections and identifies a number of key issues that emerged during the campaign affecting the conduct of the contests which have a bearing on future PCC elections. It treats these elections as a bespoke topic and does not seek to place them within the broader context of the development of the office of PCC. Practical implications The research suggests that in order to boost voter participation in future PCC election contests, PCCs need to consider further means to advertise the importance of the role they perform and that the government should play a larger financial role in funding publicity for these elections and consider changing the method of election. Social implications The rationale for introducing PCCs was to empower the public in each police force area. However, issues that include the enhanced importance of political affiliation as a criteria for election in 2016 and the social unrepresentative nature of those who stood for election and those who secured election to this office in these contests coupled with shortcomings related to public awareness of both the role of PCCs and the timing of election contests threaten to undermine this objective. Originality/value The extensive use of primary source material ensures that the subject matter is original and its interpretation is informed by an academic perspective.
