Teacher Performance-Based Incentives and Learning Inequality

This study evaluates the impacts of low-cost, performance-based incentives in Tanzanian secondary schools. Results from a two-phase randomized trial show that incentives for teachers led to modest average improvements in student achievement across different subjects. Further, withdrawing incentives did not lead to a “discouragement effect” (once incentives were withdrawn, student performance did not fall below pre-baseline levels). Rather, impacts on learning were sustained beyond the intervention period. However, these incentives may have exacerbated learning inequality within and across schools. Increases in learning were concentrated among initially better-performing schools and students. At the same time, learning outcomes may have decreased for schools and students that were lower performing at baseline. Finally, the study finds that incentivizing students without simultaneously incentivizing teachers did not produce observable learning gains.

Actively engaging students in lecture has been shown to increase learning gains. To create time for active learning without displacing content we used two strategies for introducing material before class in a large introductory biology course. Four to five slides from 2007/8 were removed from each of three lectures in 2009 and the information introduced in preclass worksheets or narrated PowerPoint videos. In class, time created by shifting lecture material to learn before lecture (LBL) assignments was used to engage students in application of their new knowledge. Learning was evaluated by comparing student performance in 2009 versus 2007/8 on LBL-related question pairs, matched by level and format. The percentage of students who correctly answered five of six LBL-related exam questions was significantly higher (p < 0.001) in 2009 versus 2007/8. The mean increase in performance was 21% across the six LBL-related questions compared with <3% on all non-LBL exam questions. The worksheet and video LBL formats were equally effective based on a cross-over experimental design. These results demonstrate that LBLs combined with interactive exercises can be implemented incrementally and result in significant increases in learning gains in large introductory biology classes.

<p>The current educational process shows that many students who are less active during the learning process. Learning process is focused on the teachers only which<br />affects the students’ lack of understanding of the lesson. This study aims to<br />determine the application of edmodo media with ASSURE learning design on teacher performance and student learning outcomes. This research is a classroom action research conducted in class X TKBB SMK N 2 Surakarta, amounting to 31 students. This research was conducted in two cycles. Each cycle consists of the planning, implementation, observation, and refletion phases. The research instrument used consisted of teacher performance appraisal, student performance appraisal by teacher, cognitive, psychomotor, and affective assessment. The validity of the data using triangulation and analyze the data using descriptive quantitative analyze model by using descriptive statistics.The results showed that at the time of pre-cycle of teacher performance included in category C with value 66,67, cycle I entered in category B with value of 75,00 and cycle II entered in category B with value 83,33. Its mean, Edmodo media with ASSURE learning design can improve teacher performance. In each cycle, as well as the increase in student learning outcomes, this means increased teacher performance also has an<br />impact on increasing student learning outcomes<br /><br /></p>

Abstrak: Penelitian ini bertujuan mengetahui hubungan antara kinerja guru dengan prestasi belajar siswa SMA 1 Muhammadiyah Palangka Raya. Populasi dalam penelitian ini seluruh guru yang mengajar pada kelas XII IPS II sejumlah 15 orang, yang selanjutnya ditetapkan sebagai sampel total. Pengumpulan data menggunakan angket/kuisioner. Analisis data menggunakan korelasi Spearman dengan bantuan aplikasi IBM SPSS versi 20. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa terdapat hubungan antara kinerja guru dengan hasil belajar siswa kelas XII di SMA 1 Muhammadiyah Palangka Raya.  Abstract: This study aims to determine the relationship between teacher performance and student achievement at SMA 1 Muhammadiyah Palangka Raya. The population in this study were all 15 teachers who taught in class XII IPS II, which were then designated as the total sample. Data analysis used Spearman correlation with the help of the IBM SPSS version 20 application. The results showed that there was a relationship between teacher performance and student learning outcomes in class XII in SMA 1 Muhammadiyah Palangka Raya.

ABSTRAKHasil belajar (prestasi belajar) merupakan perubahan perilaku yang diperoleh seseorang setelah mengalami aktivitas belajar. Perolehan aspek-aspek perubahan perilaku tersebut tergantung pada apa yang dipelajari oleh seseorang. Berhasil atau tidaknya seseorang untuk belajar disebabkan beberapa faktor yang mempengaruhi dalam pencapaian hasil belajar (prestasi belajar) yaitu berasal dari dalam diri orang yang belajar dan ada pula yang dari luar dirinya. Banyak faktor yang mempengaruhinya, diantaranya adalah motivasi dan minat. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui hubungan motivasi dan minat masuk Program Studi D  III Kebidanan dengan prestasi belajar mahasiswa  STIKES Insan Cendekia Husada Bojonegoro. Jenis penelitian ini adalah analitik korelasi. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan cross sectional. Populasi dalam penelitian ini adalah semua mahasiswa Program Studi D III Kebidanan STIKES Insan Cendekia Husada Bojonegoro sebanyak 39 mahasiswa dengan  teknik total sampling dengan jumlah sampel 39. Penelitian ini menggunakan instrumen berupa kuesioner. Analisis hubungan variabel dilakukan dengan menggunakan Yates Correction. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa ada hubungan antara motivasi masuk Program Studi D III Kebidanan dengan prestasi belajar mahasiswa           (ρ =0,027) dan ada hubungan antara minat masuk Program Studi D III Kebidanan dengan prestasi belajar mahasiswa (ρ =0,044). Saran untuk Program Studi D III Kebidanan STIKES Insan Cendekia Husada Bojonegoro agar meningkatkan prestasi belajar mahasiswa Prodi D III kebidanan STIKES Insan Cendekia Husada Bojonegoro dengan cara dosen atau pembimbing akademik menciptakan kondisi pembelajaran yang menarik, sarana prasarana yang menunjang, hubungan antara dosen dan mahasiswa yang baik, sehingga mahasiswa terdorong untuk butuh dan terus belajar dan melakukan pemantauan dan pendekatan lebih dalam terhadap mahasiswa tentang tujuan mereka untuk masuk di Program Studi D III Kebidanan. Kata Kunci : Motivasi, minat, prestasi belajar  ABSTRACT      Results of learning (learning achievement) is obtained by a person's behavior changes after experiencing learning activities. Acquisition aspects of the behavior change depending on what is learned by someone. Success or failure of someone to learn due to several factors that affect the achievement of learning outcomes (learning achievement) that comes from within the person who studied and some are from outside himself. Many factors influence it, such as motivation and interest. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship of motivation and interest in D III Midwifery Studies Program with student achievement STIKES Insan Scholar Husada Bojonegoro. This type of research is analytic correlation. This study used cross sectional approach. The population in this study were all students of the D III Midwifery STIKES Insan Husada Bojonegoro Scholar at least 39 students with a total sampling with a sample of 39. This study used a questionnaire instrument. Variable correlation analysis done using Yates Correction. Results of this study indicate that there is a relationship between motivation incoming D III Midwifery Studies Program with student achievement (ρ = 0.027) and there is a correlation between interest in D III Midwifery Studies Program with student achievement (ρ = 0.044). Suggestions for Study Program D III Midwifery STIKES Insan Scholar Husada Bojonegoro in order to increase student achievement Prodi DIII midwifery personnel STIKES Scholar Husada Bojonegoro by way of a professor or academic supervisor creates an attractive learning conditions, infrastructure that support, the relationship between faculty and students good , so that students are encouraged to take and continue to learn and perform monitoring and deeper approach to the students about their goals for entry in the D III Midwifery Studies Program. The prediction of student academic performance has drawn considerable attention in education. However, although the learning outcomes are believed to improve learning and teaching, prognosticating the attainment of student outcomes remains underexplored. A decade of research work conducted between 2010 and November 2020 was surveyed to present a fundamental understanding of the intelligent techniques used for the prediction of student performance, where academic success is strictly measured using student learning outcomes. The electronic bibliographic databases searched include ACM, IEEE Xplore, Google Scholar, Science Direct, Scopus, Springer, and Web of Science. Eventually, we synthesized and analyzed a total of 62 relevant papers with a focus on three perspectives, (1) the forms in which the learning outcomes are predicted, (2) the predictive analytics models developed to forecast student learning, and (3) the dominant factors impacting student outcomes. The best practices for conducting systematic literature reviews, e.g., PICO and PRISMA, were applied to synthesize and report the main results. The attainment of learning outcomes was measured mainly as performance class standings (i.e., ranks) and achievement scores (i.e., grades). Regression and supervised machine learning models were frequently employed to classify student performance. Finally, student online learning activities, term assessment grades, and student academic emotions were the most evident predictors of learning outcomes. We conclude the survey by highlighting some major research challenges and suggesting a summary of significant recommendations to motivate future works in this field.

Component fraction (CF) is one of the most important parameters in multiple-phase flow. Due to the complexity of the solid–liquid two-phase flow, the CF estimation remains unsolved both in scientific research and industrial application for a long time. Electrical resistance tomography (ERT) is an advanced type of conductivity detection technique due to its low-cost, fast-response, non-invasive, and non-radiation characteristics. However, when the existing ERT method is used to measure the CF value in solid–liquid two-phase flow in dredging engineering, there are at least three problems: (1) the dependence of reference distribution whose CF value is zero; (2) the size of the detected objects may be too small to be found by ERT; and (3) there is no efficient way to estimate the effect of artifacts in ERT. In this paper, we proposed a method based on the clustering technique, where a fast-fuzzy clustering algorithm is used to partition the ERT image to three clusters that respond to liquid, solid phases, and their mixtures and artifacts, respectively. The clustering algorithm does not need any reference distribution in the CF estimation. In the case of small solid objects or artifacts, the CF value remains effectively computed by prior information. To validate the new method, a group of typical CF estimations in dredging engineering were implemented. Results show that the new method can effectively overcome the limitations of the existing method, and can provide a practical and more accurate way for CF estimation.

In view of badly transplanting of analog filter and low cost performance of digital filter for the washing out signal methods used by dynamic simulator, this paper proposed a computer intelligent time domain method. We decompose signal with the computer intelligence in the time domain, and convert the signal into the corresponding movement form respectively, then get the final result by overlaying them. The experimental results show that this method not only can achieve the effect of the traditional methods, better portability and faster computation speed, but also can be achieved directly on general computers.

In the past several years, small satellites have taken on an increasingly important role as affordable technology demonstrators and are now being viewed as viable low-cost platforms for traditional spacecraft mission objectives. As such, the CubeSat standard (1 kg in a 10 cm cube) has been widely adopted for university-led development efforts even as it is embraced by traditional spacecraft developers, such as NASA. As CubeSats begin to take on roles traditionally filled by much larger spacecraft, the infrastructure for dynamics and controls testing must also transition to accommodate the different size and cost scaling associated with CubeSats. While air-bearing-based testbeds are commonly used to enable a variety of traditional ground testing and development for spacecraft, few existing designs are suitable for development of CubeSat-scale technologies, particularly involving multibody dynamics. This work describes Cornell University's FloatCube testbed, which provides a planar reduced-friction environment for multibody dynamics and controls technology development for spacecraft less than 6 kg and a 15 cm cube. The multimodule testbed consists of four free-floating air-bearing platforms with on-board gas supplies that allow the platforms to float over a glass surface without external attachments. Each of these platforms, or FloatCubes, can host CubeSat-sized payloads at widely ranging levels of development, from prototype components to full-scale systems. The FloatCube testbed has already hosted several successful experiments, proving its ability to provide an affordable reduced-friction environment to CubeSat-scale projects. This paper provides information on the system design, cost, performance, operating procedures, and applications of this unique, and increasingly relevant, testbed.

The purpose of this study was to determine: (1) the performance of certified teachers; (2) student learning outcomes; (3) the effect of teacher certification on teacher performance; and (4) the effect of teacher certification on student learning outcomes in MTs. Model Sorong City. The research approach used is quantitative with survey techniques. The method of determining the sample used is a saturated sample. That is, 20 respondents sample the entire population. The analytical method used is a simple linear regression method. The results of this study indicate that: (1) the performance of certified teachers is good (3.56); (2) student learning outcomes are classified as good (3.97); (3) there is a positive and significant effect of teacher certification on teacher performance by 73.3%; and (4) there is a positive and significant effect of teacher certification on student learning outcomes by 64.3%. It can be concluded that the provision of certification allowances can improve teacher performance and student learning outcomes in MTs. Model Sorong City.

This study aims to improve social studies learning outcomes in fifth grade students of Inpres 4/82 elementary school Walian through the Implementation of the Student Teams Achievement Divission Model. This study uses a classroom action research method consisting of 4 stages: planning, implementing / acting, observing and reflecting. Then to determine student learning outcomes can be calculated using the mastery learning formula. The results obtained in the first cycle reached 65.4% while in the second cycle the results obtained reached 87.8%. Thus it can be concluded that by applying the Student Achievement Achievement Divission model can improve the social learning outcomes of fifth grade students of SD Inpres 4/82 Walian..
