The problem of intensification of agricultural production in the conditions of rapidly growing population is highlighted. In agriculture, their severity is even more pronounced, because this sector of the economy has always been characterized by its problems and actively attracted public attention. Among these problems and unsolved problems, recently, issues related to the intensification of agricultural production, which has significant features, have become especially relevant. Its consistent implementation affects important aspects of agricultural theory, primarily related to the law of declining soil fertility, the theory and conditions of formation of differential land rent. From a practical point of view, the intensification of agricultural production, the driving force of which is scientific and technological progress and systemic technical and technological transformations, provides a set of measures to ensure environmental sustainability, rationalization of nature. Their scientific and theoretical development becomes an objective necessity in the formation of a market economy and market relations. The management practice of agricultural enterprises requires a deeper justification of measures to intensify agricultural production. Thus, the intensification of agriculture is not only a vital economic strategy, but also largely social. After all, the formation and development of agricultural production on the basis of intensification provides income to enterprises in the agricultural sector, which will improve the living conditions of the rural population.

The article is devoted to the study of the problems of assessing and predicting the sustainability of the competitive positions of the agricultural sector in the region. The analysis of theoretical approaches to the definition of the studied categories is carried out. It has been substantiated that sustainable competitive positions can be ensured by sustainable competitive advantages. For the agricultural sector, it will be most expedient to obtain competitive advantages based on internal competitive advantages, that is, dominance in the industry due to the efficient use of resources. Based on the essence of the competitive position, a methodological approach to assessing the competitive position has been substantiated, which provides for an integral assessment using indices of individual indicators in comparing industry average and regional values. It is proposed to take into account the specifics of the industry when assessing and predicting the sustainability of the competitive position of the agricultural sector in the region. To assess the sustainability of the competitive position, a method is proposed for comparing the rates of change in the main economic indicators of the agricultural sector of the region and the industry as a whole. The assessment of the competitive position of the agrarian sector of the region is carried out in comparison with the industry average indicators for the main components of the competitive potential. It is proved that the adoption of effective management decisions to ensure the sustainability of a competitive position is impossible without presenting the future trajectory of the development of events and the influences of factors of the internal and external environment. Forecasting is an important tool for taking into account future changes when making management decisions. The article calculates the predicted values of the integral index of competitive position stability and its components using the exponential smoothing method using the Brown-Mayer model, which made it possible to assess the dynamics and development trends of the agricultural sector in the region. It has been proved that in order to achieve competitive advantages, enterprises in the agricultural sector of the region should focus on the effective use of internal resources, which in the future will form the basis of sustainable development.

Social science theory for environmental sustainability: A practical guide makes social science theory accessible and usable to anyone interested in working toward environmental sustainability at any scale. Environmental problems are, first and foremost, people problems. Without better understandings of the people involved, solutions are often hard to come by. This book answers calls for demonstrating the value of theories from the social sciences for solving these types of problems and provides strategies to facilitate their use. It contains concise summaries of over thirty social science theories and demonstrates how to use them in diverse contexts associated with environmental conflict, conservation, natural resource management, and other environmental sustainability challenges. The practical applications of the theories include persuasive communication, conflict resolution, collaboration, negotiation, enhancing organizational effectiveness, working across cultures, generating collective impact, and building more resilient governance of social-ecological systems. Examples throughout the book and detailed vignettes illustrate how to combine multiple social science theories to develop effective strategies for environmental problem solving. The final chapter draws out key principles for enhancing these efforts. The book will serve as a key reference for environmental professionals, business people, students, scientists, public officials, government employees, aid workers, or any concerned citizen who wants to be better equipped to navigate the social complexities of environmental challenges and make a meaningful impact on any environmental issue.

Following a long history of using various strategies and policies for diversification and seasonal adjustment in the face of the challenges of achieving economic, social, and environmental sustainability, sun and beach destinations should also consider targeting the wellness tourism market as a post pandemic opportunity and long-term solution. Salou is a mature sun and beach destination in the Mediterranean, but one which, for some time, has had an increasing commitment to family and sports tourism as a result of a strategic renewal process. Now, with the impact of the coronavirus pandemic, the destination management organization is considering the evolution of the model, the internalization of sustainability as a fundamental value, and the impact of different markets. In this study, we examined the challenges the Salou Tourist Board has faced during the development of a post pandemic model for sustainable tourism and what strategies it has adopted in response. We also considered the opportunities and competitive advantages that Salou has in the field of wellness tourism. The results obtained should encourage the continuation of work that promotes the environmental axis of sustainability and adds value to the natural resources on which it depends, including the sea and the landscape, while maintaining the environmental quality of the resources.

PurposeDespite the prevalence of academic literature debating and proposing competing conceptions of social value creation through socially driven enterprises, there is a lack of empirical studies on established impact measurement methodologies in the context of real-world ventures. The purpose of this paper is to illustrate a structured process of conducting social impact assessments (SIAs) through the real-world case of Richmond, Virginia Works Enterprise Support (RVA Works), a social enterprise in Richmond, Virginia, that provides educational programming on small business ownership to minorities and lower-income individuals.Design/methodology/approachThis qualitative research study incorporates an in-depth case study methodology. Evidence was collected through interpretive/qualitative interviews and direct observations by the researchers.FindingsUsing the example of RVA Works, the authors show that there is a lack of standardization and guidance for social entrepreneurs in choosing methods to assess their organizational performance, and that leading conceptions of social impact continue to face key weaknesses in their methodologies.Practical implicationsBy incorporating a qualitative case study approach, the authors present a real-world study of a social enterprise – specifically a microenterprise development organization – that may serve as a valuable example to social entrepreneurs and not-for-profit leaders facing similar challenges of social value creation and impact measurement.Originality/valueIn studying the experience of conducting SIAs by social enterprises, the authors illustrate the real-world challenges faced by entrepreneurs in applying theoretical conceptions of social value to the outcomes of their ventures, thus illustrating a need for additional clarity and discussion around a more comprehensive, standardized and broadly applicable measurement approach.
