TITLE: Gymnastics for All and experienced bodies: a dialogue between gymnastics and other physical activities ABSTRACT BACKGROUND: Gymnastics for All (GfA) has been consolidating experiences in the most different socio-educational contexts, increasingly reaching heterogeneous participants. In Brazil, a country where GfA is strongly associated with University Extension, we have observed in recent years its development with the elderly public. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to analyse the experiences of participants of the GfA project entitled “Gymnastics for Experienced Bodies”, from the “Programa UniversIDADE” (Unicamp), and the possible relations with the participants’ previous experiences regarding other physical activities. METHODS: In this case study, structured interviews were made with nine participants of the project. The data analysis was carried out based on the Content Analysis methodology. RESULTS: The results indicate that the participants’ previous experiences are concentrated in two subcategories – “Fitness” and “Mind-Body Exercises” – being mostly done individually. Eight out of nine participants said they noticed significant differences between their previous experiences and their participation on the GfA project. The differences pointed out were, mainly, on the pedagogical proposal that guides this GfA project and on the consequences of this approach: the creation of social bonds with other participants, the possibilities of adapting movements and their techniques, the promotion of social skills through cooperative dynamics, and, finally, the coach’s role as a facilitator whilst learning new movements and skills. CONCLUSION: We conclude that GfA can contribute to the demands and interests – social, physical, and psychological – characteristic of the aging process, allowing the practice of gymnastics in a flexible, motivated, and powerful way, mainly regarding the constitution of social ties.

PurposeThis study examines how modular interfaces manifest in multi-provider contexts and how they can improve coordination and customization of services. The aim of the study is to describe interfaces in multi-provider contexts and elaborate on how they support the delivery of integrated patient care.Design/methodology/approachA qualitative, multiple case study was conducted in two multi-provider contexts in healthcare services: one representing paediatric Down syndrome care in the Netherlands and one representing home care for the elderly in Finland. Data collection involved semi-structured interviews in both contexts.FindingsThis study provides insight into several types of interfaces and their role in multi-provider contexts. Several inter- and intra-organizational situations were identified in which the delivery of integrated patient care was jeopardized. This study describes how interfaces can help to alleviate these situations.Originality/valueThis study deepens the understanding of interfaces in service modularity by describing interfaces in multi-provider contexts. The multi-provider contexts studied inspired to incorporate the inter-organizational aspect into the literature on interfaces in service modularity. This study further develops the typology for interfaces in modular services by adding a third dimension to the typology, that is, the orientation of interfaces.

In the sport, physical activity, and aging literature, much attention has been given to the importance of physical activity and sport involvement for the elderly. Most of the literature, however, has focused on the continuity of physical activity among older adults. The purpose of this study was to extend the understanding of older sport participants by conducting a case study of Max Springer, a male, White master runner (88 years old). We assumed that continuity in sport would represent a primary adaptive strategy for coping with the aging process. In addition to two in-depth interviews with Max, the authors interviewed various other “participants” regarding their perceptions of Max as an older runner. From deductive analysis of the interview material, the following themes emerged as figural to Max’s experience as an older runner: tradition of always being physically active, I’m not an athlete, being of senior age, meaning and philosophy of running, and significance of social support.

Aging populations pose a challenge to many policy areas. Although the importance of the built environment on citizens’ mobility and quality of life has been widely acknowledged in the literature, research focusing on elderly people is relatively recent and still scarce namely in Portugal. This article aims at understanding how local stakeholders perceive the built environment and occupational activities targeted to the elderly. The article focuses on the municipality of Viseu, a medium-sized city located in the NUTSII Centro Region of Portugal, considered twice to be the best city to live in in Portugal. Document analysis and face-to-face semi-structured interviews of local stakeholders were conducted. Findings show that there is still a need to take further policy steps to allow older adults to be more active and to promote the neighbourhood’s walkability.

AbstractThe interviewer's desire for rapport with the respondent is both the greatest weakness and the greatest strength of semi-structured interviewing. As has been discussed at some length, structured interviews present difficulties with aged or mentally ill respondents who are unwilling or unable to play the game involved therein. Structured interviews also are impregnated with subjectivity in the form of working (and often unconscious) assumptions made by the researcher. For these reasons, they are likely to yield little understanding of the experiential world of the elderly. It has been suggested here that the major strength of the semi-structured interview is its flexibility, allowing the researcher to grasp more of the substance of the old person's world than is permitted in a more rigid methodological technique. This is not to say that the entire substance of the older person's world can ever be touched; one's understanding of anyone else (even with the best interviewer imaginable) will be imperfect. As Laing observed about the schizophrenic: What is required of us? Understand him? The kernel of a schizophrenic's experience of himself must remain incomprehensible to us.... But comprehension as an effort to reach and grasp him by our own categories whereby he inevitably falls short is not what the schizophrenic wants or requires. We have to recognize all the time his distinctiveness and differentness, his separateness and loneliness and despair.16 Semi-structured interviews such as those just described attempt to take into consideration both the nature of the experience of the interviewer and the respondent and their distinctiveness. Through this method, one can hope not only to describe particular experiences and perceptions of the respondent but also to "set them within the gestalt." With such information, perhaps one can not only move closer to a phenomenology of the interview but also possess more reliable tools in social science that will be of use with a variety of populations. Hopefully, one may also glean knowledge about the aging process, in both its normal and pathological aspects, that will provide a more complete understanding about this last stage of the life cycle and its relationship to all of life.
