The majority of universities in South Africa offer face-to-face lectures, resulting in the neglect of online lectures, although learning management systems (LMS) have been adopted and are capable of supporting onlinelearning (e-learning). The coronavirus pandemic (COVID-19) forced universities to move fully online and to adopt Video Conferencing Technologies (VCT) to supplement LMS for e-learning. However, most students confront challenges related to a digital divide, raising the question of whether universities are able to address these effectively. This study explored students’ reflections on the use of the Zoom VCT for e-learning at a SouthAfrican university. An interpretive qualitative case study was conducted, with data generated using emailed reflective activities and Zoom focus group discussions with 26 students in a curriculum studies programme. The framework of connectivism was employed and the data were thematically analysed. The study found that Internet access was a major challenge. While most students enjoyed synchronous Zoom discussions, they wereunable to use other Zoom functions for effective engagement. It is thus recommended that the university should develop an e-learning policy and provide the necessary resources and training to students in order to ensure fitness for purpose. Key words: students’ reflections, Zoom VCT, e-learning, face-to-face, curriculum, university

The liberal arts lecture called “thinking and expression” aims to provide a foundation for improving basic and professional communication skills to be used in universities and societies. However, it is true that “thinking and expression” is being developed as a writing-oriented lecture at each university, and online lectures in the current non-face-to-face situation expose various limitations due to the nature of writing. As a result, the following conclusions were obtained by reviewing the PBL lecture module of K University. First, theory-oriented writing classes do not stimulate students' interest in non-face-to-face situations, and existing writing textbooks also need to be extensively supplemented suitable for non-face-to-face situations. In non-face-to-face situations, writing lectures face contradictions that have no choice but to return to theory rather than practice, so it is imperative to develop online writing lecture modules in the university itself to improve the quality of lectures. Second, discussion classes based on PBLs are a priority to forestall various problems that can occur in non-face-to-face classes. It is important to consider using the video conference platform to facilitate communication between students in non-face-to-face situations as much as possible, but to encourage direct conversation to build intimacy rather than chatting. In order to become a PBL differentiated from the existing group learning, we pay more attention to the problem-solving process itself, and lead cooperative learning to more actively respond to social problems and find practical solutions through the ‘living lab’ method. Third, in non-face-to-face writing, the interaction between students and professors is absolute, and the process of writing and correcting together is important to form communication. Along with real-time lectures using video conferencing platforms, it is very important for professors to continue to show interest in students' writings and feedback them one by one.

The purpose of the article is to determine the features of video lecturing and pinpoint opportunities to improve presenting of theoretical material online. The relevance of the study is caused by the lack of experience of the majority of Ukrainian lecturers in teaching by video conferences before 2020. Insufficient covering of this issue emphasizes the urgency of the publication. To achieve our goal, the following tasks were set: to consider the main differences between online lecturing and in-class lectures and other ways of distance teaching; to generalize the main problems of students and teachers arising during online lectures; to propose the ways to solve those problems and describe the possibilities of using the advantages of online lectures. To achieve the set goal, the following methods were used in the paper: abstract, logical and comparative analysis, survey, expert evaluation, monographic, analysis and synthesis, dialectic, tabular and graphic. To study the students’ opinions concerning online lectures in March-April 2021, the anonymous survey of full-time students studying at the Faculty of Accounting and Finance of Poltava State Agrarian University was conducted. 69.7% of respondents consider this format either better or not worse than in-class lessons. The main students’ problems that appeared during online lectures were the technical ones: (the absence or low quality of Internet and hardware) and the lack of face-to-face communication. It is proposed for the educational establishment to choose the single software product for video lecturing; to make records of video lectures with their further promulgation on the platform determined by the university; for the lecturing professor to create a friendly atmosphere; to introduce the obligatory revision of the students’ notes; to ensure the opportunity for students to ask questions to the lecturer; to promote active use of interactive lecture to ensure activate participation of the students (in particular, the lectures with previously planned errors, binary lectures, and lectures-conferences).
